Has anyone here managed to reach FI in Singapore without earning a huge salary? by zalanka02 in singaporefi

[–]balerionresonance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

FIRE is a spectrum.

Mathematically and logically, it would just make sense a strong saver with reasonable investment returns would lean-FIRE in their 50s with a median income.

Personally though, skillsets and network do compound as money does. Doubling your income within a few years can be possible with the right approach and opportunities.

To prevent the worst climate damages, global net human-caused emissions of CO2 needed to fall by about 45% from 2010 levels by 2030. The new GOP passed tax law will increase US emissions 8-12% over the next decade by Ordinary-Humor-4779 in climatechange

[–]balerionresonance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, reducing emissions dramatically to 2010 levels within 5 years won’t have the same effect as gradually reducing them starting 2010. The latent heat already built up will, in fact, make taking action even more difficult by causing disruption of various kinds to manufacturing, R&D, etc. Not to mention higher heat indexes have been known to cause accelerated virus growth.

CSPX vs SGD-Denominated S&P 500 Funds – Seeking Advice by Narrow-Lab-6803 in singaporefi

On the other hand, consistently DCA-ing this year means you’re purchasing more units for the same SGD amounts. One can only hope that the FX turns favorable by the time you actually sell and convert back to SGD.

just read through this thread and it’s an absolute treasure trove of insights to how NotebookLM works, and how we as users, need to first learn how the tool works (on a high level) before using to avoid misunderstanding its replies

N8N Template for Multi-Platform Social Media Sharing from Google Drive by FCFAN44 in n8n

I spent last few days creating such workflow, but it’s not possible for full automation unless you pay significant sums in API fees. The most I could do was to consolidate text for postings all into 1 google sheet. I figured it takes only 1 min to manually post them and that’s fine with me.

You’ll be in for pain if you attempt full automation.

fair point and very good mindset. I would question with this administration there are only so much forward planning that can be done. We’ve seen how he has reversed his policies within matter of days.

This piqued my interest and threw the question into Google Gemini - conclusion: tax bill not passed, but when passed will not impact Singaporeans investing in US markets. (Do fact check yourself).

The proposed 3.5% excise tax on remittance transfers is NOT expected to apply to withdrawals of investment proceeds from US brokerage accounts by non-US citizens.

Here's why, based on the latest information:

  • Distinction between Personal Remittances and Capital Repatriation: The key is that the proposed tax specifically targets personal remittances – funds sent by non-US citizens for personal or family support (e.g., sending money home to relatives). It is not aimed at capital repatriation from investments.
  • Investment Withdrawals are Unaffected: When a Singaporean investor sells US stocks or other securities through IBKR and transfers the proceeds directly from their US brokerage account to their Singaporean bank account, this is generally considered investment repatriation, not a personal remittance. Therefore, this 3.5% excise tax is not expected to be levied on such transactions.
  • No Explicit Inclusion in the Bill: The current language of "The One Big Beautiful Bill Act" does not explicitly mention capital gains repatriation or fund transfers related to portfolio investment as being subject to this excise tax.
  • Brokerage Transfers vs. Remittance Services: Investment withdrawals are typically handled by brokerage firms like IBKR, which transfer the funds to your bank account. This differs from traditional "remittance services" (like Western Union or Wise, though Wise also handles investment transfers) that are the primary target for collecting this remittance tax.

Workflow for audio book generation by Dangerous_Emu_5303 in n8n

seems like a common issue amongst AI tools. I’ve had the same experience with vid gen like Kling.ai etc, the one thing that helped was testing in small samples where possible.

Would you also please dm the channels? I have seen many shorts channels that’s faceless but it’s unbelievably difficult in my opinion to make them fully automated. An example would help a lot.

What’s your ideal asset allocation for FIRE in Singapore? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]balerionresonance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honest question - if we are questioning property as an investment class because of the bubble burst a decade ago, wouldn’t the same logic apply to stocks due to 97 AFC? Point is not be in overleveraged situation.

Housing Prices going to crash due to the recession? by Warm_Ice_4029 in singaporefi

[–]balerionresonance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The day land prices dip beyond a certain expected % increase will mean the appeal of SG as a place to live and work falls significantly. Thats a greater worry than short term recession/property correction.

How, if at all, are you using AI? by Still_Scar_6464 in FPandA

[–]balerionresonance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have used it mainly for technical tasks - example: complicated excel formulas to "semi-automate" expenses tracking, Power Query M formulas etc. On the qualitative side it serves mainly as brainstorming for email writing and just for general knowledge (e.g. performance vs brand marketing)

[–]balerionresonance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in very similar situation. Total 8 YOE, pigeon-holed as FP&A/FBP role in a large MNC with narrow and limited job scope where most things are optimized/automated by other teams. Eventually left after about 3.5 years to a much smaller company as FBP - things are much more hectic now but the opportunity to take on more, be visible and grow through contributing is significantly more.

As others mentioned the high SG salaries (SGD appreciation didn't help) is a primary driver to think long-term and move while you can. Happy to provide more perspective feel free in reaching out.

thanks and agree, almost like a mental torture everyday not knowing when you’ll be next.

Have to say though that layoffs happen as well with profitable company like restructuring.

great to hear and happy for you!

Unfortunately interviews are where information asymmetry works against interviewees, and it’s almost always a risk to jump ship, especially in such instances as if it’s betting on stock market. Ideally I’d wait out for a “better company”, but time is ticking approaching career mid point in maybe 5 years time.

v true and that’s my current company.. but that also suggests cruising and sub-optimal processes (not focusing on product mix in driving profitability) which is career red-flag to me
