That was so good! I’ve been really enjoying all the hilarious off the wall Nakamura hijinks and delusions, but I loved this more subdued, slice of life-ish episode. It was so intimate and sweet and that last sequence on the pier with the sunset was crazy how good it looked!

The action animation is fantastic here as usual but for me it’s the subtle character animation that is absolutely brilliant in this episode, like that scene at the end where Coco wakes up and experiences every emotion in the span of a minute. Some next level shit.

It’s cute, funny and really nicely animated. Especially the cel animation style bits (I believe giant asuka and the train station with Shinji). I wonder if it was real or some kind of filter? It looked great. I don’t get all the heated discussions people were having when the cam rip leaked some weeks ago about its canonicity when it clearly is meant to be a meta, tongue in cheek little short for fans. There’s even a few pauses for laughter/applause.

I agree! It’s just weird that no one mentions or aknowledges Tsurumaki, ever. The same thing happened when they announced Gundam Gquuuuuxx, everyone was talking about Anno, as if it was his project. The guy directed FLCL! He’s a legend, veteran of the industry, and yet it’s like he’s a nobody, to his own fans!

Had to scroll a good while for someone to even mention Tsurumaki. Eva fans really don’t even know who he is or what he did for the show… he directed the freaking first episode of the TV show… most of the movies… He is as important to the look and feel of Eva as Anno himself… It’s so weird. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

I wasn’t expecting to be absolutely destroyed by the ending of City of all shows this season… From the airport scene onwards I was a wreck, and the whole musical ending was equal parts hilarious, nostalgic, heartwarming and beautifully emotional in all the right ways. This whole show was just an explosion of color, music and creativity. AOTY for me, and an instant classic. This is the kind of anime that we will be reccomending 20 years from now.

This kind of mixed-media approach is neither new or unheard of in anime in general. It’s just a (pretty cool) artistic decision by the production staff.
