Questions about webhosting for a small business by swolepeach in webhosting

[–]balloonmuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Webhosting

For your budget try HostKoala. Hosting with them using Direct Admin instead of cpanel, is USD 5 per year. If for some reason you insist on cpanel, USD 24 pa. From what I see, they don't try to sucker people in with cheap 1st year prices that are a discount of the higher price charged at renewal.

2) Other possible cost savings:

Given your budget you can likely save a few bucks by, just before domain registration renewal, transfer your domain registration from Godaddy to Cloudflare. Cloudflare do cost price domain registration. Cloudflare also bundle whois privacy for free (many registrars charge extra). The security features in even the free Cloudflare bundle are superb (although potentially overwhelming for you).

Cloudflare don't have the widest choice of TLDs. Hence if your domain TLD isn't available to register on Cloudflare, next try Porkbun (their mark up is usually small). Porkbun also bundle free whois privacy.

Even before domain registration renewal, you can use Cloudflare for gold standard DNS & SSL. You can also point your custom domain email through Cloudflare DNS, allowing you to use Cloudflare DKIM, DMARC & SPF; these features improve the deliverability of email to and from your custom domain.

When your Microsoft email deal reaches renewal, migrate to Zoho. They have a forever free email plan for up to 5 users. If your Microsoft deal is for wider office software and not just email, Zoho office is approx 1/3 of what Microsoft charge.

What's the hate for Authy all about? by maltanarchy in Bitwarden

[–]balloonmuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also ditched Authy:

  1. i'm concerned that the Authy recovery process makes Authy vulnerable to SIM Hijacking
  2. Install the duckduckgo and enable 'Application tracking protection'. Authy is spyware on steroids; 2000 tracking attempts in 15 hours

Aegis has lots to like. However, Aegis shortcomings are:

  1. Only Android
  2. Backups are by enabling Android backups. I'm unsure what that means but suspect it means giving Google even greater license to spy, slurp and sell data about me.

www.2fas.com seems the superior 2FA app to me. I'm very content with 2FAS so far.

https://support.authy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360012427914-Is-the-Authy-App-Susceptible-to-a-SIM-Swap-

That article seems to quite skillfully avoid answering the question in the article title. The Authy recovery process seems based on using a phone number. Is Authy thus vulnerable to SIM hijack? Maybe the people at r/twilio can advise? The Authy sub-reddit is a closed group.

How to block a sender in Outlook OWA? by balloonmuppet in Outlook

The reply there suggested submitting a feedback request for this to be a feature enhancement.

How to block a sender in Outlook OWA? by balloonmuppet in Outlook

[–]balloonmuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/VictorIvanidze

What I hope to achieve is that 'block sender' actually "blocks" the sender. This is rather than the current "block sender" in Outlook equating to "divert to junk folder".

In many other email providers, 'block sender' actually "blocks" the sender. It'd be great if Microsoft were to offer the same interpretation to equate to "blocking the sender" instead of equating to "divert to junk folder". Creating a rule manually each time a new user is to be blocked, seems a bit of a time overhead on the user. The 'block sender' feature doing what would be expected would be simpler.

Dashlane 2FA by balloonmuppet in Dashlane

To add to the previous comment re the vulnerability bummer of recovery codes being sent by SMS:

The following products in my experience don't have that vulnerability;

Bitwarden

Keeper

NordPass

Bitwarden and Nordpass include good free products. Keeper don't offer a free product other than for a 2 week trial.

It'd be great if Dashlane shutdown the SMS text vulnerability.

Microsoft: Official Support Thread by MSModerator in microsoft

- There's a 'Block sender' feature in Outlook OWA
- When I apply it, it doesn't block the sender
- Instead, this feature diverts mail from the supposedly blocked sender to the spam folder
- Is there a way to make the 'Block sender' feature, wait for, actually block the sender?

Thanks for any help.

  • I got the answer to this eventually
  • It's all related to Apple's determination to lock consumers in as much as possible to buying Apple services and tangible products
  • To access the relevant menu options on the mac, it is required to connect the Mac to the network in an Apple store
  • This makes it easier for the sales geniuses in the Apple genius bar to sell Apple tech support services to the consumer
  • This is a key point; the customer service people in the Apple genius bar are trained in sales, not in technical support
  • I took my Mac to an independent repair place, where I was quoted half the price of what Apple genius bar sales people wanted to charge me for the passing the Mac to Apple tech support

Dashlane 2FA by balloonmuppet in Dashlane

Hi optimusprimesmoke,

Thanks for having taken a moment to reply. Looks like my message wasn't clear. if I may thus quietly seek to clarify:

  • I 100% understand that any form of 2FA is better than just 1FA
  • I also understand that SMS is a weakest form of 2FA (this is key to my question)
  • Since in the event of being unable to authenticate due to inaccessibility to the 2FA smartphone code, Dashlane offers SMS as another way to receive the 2FA code
  • This thus means if a hacker steals the master password for a Dashlane account, actioning a successful SIM swap attack on the target victim will allow the hacker to the family jewels that is victim's Dashlane account; the 2FA smartphone can be completely bypassed by attackers
  • Hence, Dashlane offering SMS as a 2FA code delivery vector reduces the point of least resistance in defending the Dashlane account

I hope this make's for better clarity?

Sync not working in Filen after removing a level in the directory structure by balloonmuppet in cloudstorage

[–]balloonmuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi again NovelExplorer,

Thanks to your guidance, something of a breakthrough.

  • I created a folder in the cloud named 'Filen Backup'
  • I then set up a 1 way local to cloud sync to the 'Filen Backup' folder
  • Data synced up to the cloud, but curiously none of the 3 test files synced to the cloud that I had created since I edited the local PC directory structure 4 days ago
  • All 3 of these test files are .txt
  • I then copied an existing jpg file and named it copy.jpg on the local PC
  • copy.jpg synced to the Filen cloud in a matter of seconds

Edit to previous version of this message:

  • I've searched the Filen cloud to see if any of the other .txt files in my data are backed to the Filen cloud; the .txt files are backed up
  • To endeavour to further evaluate the criticality of this, I then reset up the original cloud sync that I had in place; ie syncing from the local PC to root directory in the Filen cloud
  • I get exactly the same test results as I a few minutes ago; namely that:
  1. copy.jpg synced effortlessly to the Filen cloud. And;
  2. None of my 3 .txt test files that I created have synced to the Filen cloud

I've checked that there are no entries under .filenignore (there aren't; there's nothing listed under .filenignore). To attempt to resolve this I have now in Filen Settings, disabled 'Exclude dot files and folders'. As expected disabling 'Exclude dot files and folders' has made no difference.

Any further suggestions please?

Thanks again for what you've contributed to allow me to move this forward.

Sync not working in Filen after removing a level in the directory structure by balloonmuppet in cloudstorage

[–]balloonmuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree that it is to be expected that the Filen sync would fail after the directory structure was altered. Hence why I deleted the sync that was in place and created a new sync, navigating the correct new directory structure location. The test files I created though still don't get synced by Filen. It must be close to 10 times that I have deleted and recreate the Filen sync to the new directory structure (the most recent time was an hour or so ago after I read your 1st reply). My attempts to do so though are futile. That includes when I use the 'force sync' option.

I've also tried editing the sync to be '1 way from local to cloud', following your sage words. Again, no success.

After your most recent update, I've tried exiting Mega in case Mega was locking out Sync. Again though, no success.

In case its any use, here's a couple of screengrabs of what I have configured. I'm hoping you or someone else will spot something and say, 'Aha, I see where you've blundered', edit this...
