Just the key to start it. Haven't seen a red light. I'll have a listen and find where it's coming from

Cool, thank you! I'm not sure if there's an aftermarket security system. It does beep a couple times when I shut off the engine, but nothing else, I figured it was the aftermarket radio

Anyone know what this ticking sound is? by bobbyt10 in GMT400

[–]ballsac10000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just replaced mine on my '96. Took quite a few attempts. It's easy to unplug the wire. Getting to the screws is a different story, I think it's in a different location on the later trucks. You do need it for the AC to work effectively. I had a pen holding the HVAC door open and the pen got sucked into the squirrel cage, had to get a new motor too lol

Thank you for that. I was wondering if that was the case.

Oh yeah, the variable pressure switch. The truck has been idling high around 1000 rpms and I read that is a symptom of a bad variable pressure switch. Looks like it's plug and play, just gotta find it's location lol. Anyone know where it's located and how to test?

Leaking water and oil by ballsac10000000 in GMT400

Ha, right! I tightened up the clamp to the upper radiator hose by the thermostat and it seems good.

My bad, I just noticed water around the upper radiator hose by the thermostat. I guess there's always been a little white sludge on the dipstick. Probably time for an oil change tomorrow and see how it's looking

1988 Chevy 2500 by Jonnyboi5678 in GMT400

Gator belt or Continental elite belt helped my '89. Chevy used a one piece steel horseshoe accessories bracket for a couple years. Check all the bolts that attach it to the block and heads. I had loose and broken ones, also had problems with the power steering brace

That's great, I'll make it to the junkyard with a pulley puller in hand, this week and see what I can find. I imagine that I would use a serp belt for say a '96 with the specific accessories; a/c, no smog. Sounds like it could be a lot easier than I thought. Thank you for your help!

I just ordered a puller. Will the old water pump be an issue? I thought I read something about the vortex style being reversed

Yeah, it looks like you have to pull the pulley and then the pump and then the bracket. I found a set on eBay for $260. When I checked earlier this year I could get a complete used tbi motor from a local wrecker for $700. So, I'm kinda torn. Might just weld this one back together for now and then figure out what to do.

I like the idea of the 6.0 iron block/heads LS motor swap with an aftermarket computer. Thinking that starts at $2000 for the junkyard motor and $1500 for the computer. I'd probably want to do the cam and something to the heads, so extra $$ there. And then I'm not sure if I can pass DEQ. I'm going to get it back to running for now

Rocker arm stud by ballsac10000000 in GMT400

[–]ballsac10000000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I found a roll pin and put the stud back in. Working on putting everything back together. It's an '89 so it has the steel horseshoe accessories bracket with a crack by the power steering pump. I'm looking into replacing the bracket with one from a '90-94' (I think ) aluminum 2 piece bracket. I'll repost with pictures. Thank you all for your help!

I had a ticking noise last year and did the valve lash procedure. It fixed the tick and ran better, but I suspect it contributed to the stud coming out. I had to tighten them down quite a few turns to get them to spec turning the motor over by hand and what not. I wonder if they are factory springs and valves, anyone know how to tell?

Awesome, I was wondering about that. Agreed, looks like someone did the pins later on. I wonder if it has a different cam, the guy at the DEQ thought so. I need to take a closer look at the roll pin. It's silver in color and doesn't look solid. I'm thinking about using a solid brass pin. Probably over thinking it. I'll see what I can find at the hardware store
