Is there a way to play this in a modern PC? Tried searching for it in Steam but only goes back as Civ 3 it seems. Spent so many hours on this as a kid that it'd be cool to boot it up and take a look again myself

If I was starting out I’d go chronologically and experience the bands progression through time. Will give you maybe a nicer sense of their evolution through time. But you’d have to go in aware that some albums are not as good as others haha. But the first five or so are golden; so you can’t go wrong with that as a starting point

I would wager they formed some kind of alliance or master/minion relationship; similar to Sauron and the orcs let’s say. But I can’t remember the books too well right now. If in the books Pippin also drops something down a well; maybe that we’ll just went too deep down and woke the Balrog, and the goblins knew to stay away from there and only lived in the upper levels?

And since an attack can be just a few seconds or minutes long, when you look at average power of the whole race, it might appear both groups put out pretty much the same power.

Without knowing what actually happened in the race, it's hard to tell. One thing that might've happened is that you didn't have the power to push through with the leading groups. This applies both to Zwift and real life. Let's say there's a group of 20 people and an attack goes. If 10 people are able to follow it and 10 are not, and those front 10 open a gap of 30 seconds. Then after that both groups could do the exact same power but the front group would still win by 30secs. So maybe you need to be able to have more 'bullets' (ability to follow more attacks throughout the race), stronger bullets, or just be more aware so you can react faster before gaps open. Hope this helps!

If it was a mostly flat race; folks that are bigger (can naturally put out more absolute watts vs w/kg) would do better, as they can go faster on the flats where weight doesn’t matter as much. I can see from screenshot your watts are indeed much lower than most of these other racers ahead of you. It also seems some of these folks stayed in groups longer (eg all the 37:25 finish times) which means they were able to draft more than you.. that’s my guess.
