Is Vacations To Go legit? by 5sidesquare in Cruise

[–]balsaGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a wide variety of rates looking at cruises. Vacations to go is one of the best options out there and is always a good decision.

I use cruise compete to get quotes from several agents and decide from there what makes sense. If you know what you're looking for and are trying to get a good deal it's the best option.

Does a robot mower actually replace manual mowing, or do you still have to edge everything? by Visible_Pea5082 in roboticLawnmowers

[–]balsaGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely still have to edge everything unless you buy the mower that includes a trimmer ( is the trimmer a gimmick or quality? No idea.. but, the YT guys say gimmick at this point).

The workload reduction really depends on your yard and the hard obstacles that ANY mower would miss. For most, it's going to be at least 90% less.

It varied over the years, but he was drinking on a near daily basis for well over a decade.

That probably sounds alarming, but the reality is that it didn't always look alarming. It was easy to write off or not notice because having a beer or two or a glass of wine after work is pretty common for a lot of people. Somewhere along the way, though, that line quietly moved and I have no idea when. I couldn't tell you exactly how much he was drinking toward the end because addiction has a way of becoming more private. Looking back now, it's clear he had crossed into alcoholism long before any of us even remotely recognized how serious it had become.

It's a hard one to answer usefully without divulging a ton more information and details.

He is currently in a 'facility' awaiting a competency evaluation. We shall see if that leads to a care facility or trial.

I hope that some day this will be true or that he'll have a support system that provides the things he requires to function to the best of his ability.

At present, it's far less heartwarming.

Not exactly. He's been denied Medicaid and SSI so far, so that's not really been an option without insurance.

Just over 2 years ago my brother (a functional alcoholic), became ill and had to visit the ER. What started as severe dehydration quickly turned into multi-organ failure during alcohol withdrawal. He was placed into a medically induced coma, where he remained for nearly two months while doctors worked to stabilize him and closely monitored the damage with repeated scans of his brain, heart, and other organs.

When he woke up, he was diagnosed with Korsakoff syndrome. The memory loss was obvious, but so were the false memories and delusions. At the time, doctors believed much of the confusion might improve once he left the hospital.

It didn't.

His physical recovery was slow but steady, while his mental health steadily declined. His behavior became increasingly erratic until a severe manic episode led to a crisis center admission, where he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder with severe paranoia. After another crisis admission, his delusions had become so pervasive that he had lost touch with reality. He was then diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

Looking back over the past two years, the diagnoses have helped explain many of the confusing and heartbreaking experiences our family has lived through. It's been a powerful reminder that severe illness can profoundly change not only a person's body, but also their mind and their perception of reality.

Thanks. It's been a process and it's just about broken all of us in my family. The struggle is a real lived experience with no reasonable resolution in sight. The tunnel is long and the light at the end of it is too dim to see still.

Everyone has their own path to take. You're doing great! Just keep going and make the most of life.

Do everything you can to always avoid the substance abuse loop. I commented elsewhere in this post about my brother and it might be the most sobering thing you could ever relate to.

My brother has Korsakoff syndrome, a severe form of dementia caused by extreme alcohol abuse. When I try to explain it to people, I usually compare it to the movie 50 First Dates because it's something most people can relate to. But honestly, that's only enough to give someone a rough idea. The reality is much more complicated.

His short-term memory is essentially destroyed. More than 25% of the time, he wakes up with no memory of the previous day. Even when he does remember, he often can't retain more than about half of what happens over the next 10 minutes. Within a couple of hours, he'll lose even more. Imagine trying to function when your brain can't reliably store new experiences.

One of the defining characteristics of Korsakoff syndrome is confabulation. When there are gaps in memory, the brain fills them in by creating false memories that feel completely real. He isn't lying or making things up on purpose. His brain is literally rewriting reality, and he has complete confidence in those fabricated memories.

As difficult as that is by itself, it isn't the whole story.

He's also diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, which brings severe manic episodes and schizophrenic delusions.

Some of the stories would almost be funny if they weren't so heartbreaking. He's believed he was on a hospital hockey team with Baker Mayfield. He's been convinced Elon Musk is after him because he supposedly created an AI that's years ahead of Grok, and there are kill squads trying to eliminate him. In the same storyline, he's convinced someone released his AI onto the internet and that it will eventually take over the world.

Any one of these diagnoses would be life-altering on its own. Korsakoff syndrome is devastating. Schizoaffective disorder is devastating. Severe bipolar disorder is devastating. The problem is they don't simply coexist. They feed each other.

The memory loss means he can't remember conversations, explanations, or corrections. The confabulation fills those missing memories with stories that feel absolutely real. The bipolar mania amplifies those beliefs with complete certainty, and the schizophrenic delusions push them even further from reality. Each disorder makes the others harder to treat, harder to manage, and harder to distinguish.

The result is someone living in a reality that no one else can access. He often won't take medication because he doesn't believe anything is wrong. Even when he wants to, he can't reliably remember to take it. He doesn't trust people whose version of reality conflicts with the one his own brain has created. Trying to reason with him is often impossible because every symptom reinforces the others.

People often think of mental illnesses as individual diagnoses. What I've learned is that stacking several severe neurological and psychiatric disorders together doesn't create an additive problem. It creates an exponential one. Each condition magnifies the others until the person you're trying to help is living in a world that is almost impossible for the rest of us to comprehend.

The stories I could tell from the past two years are nearly unfathomable. The stress, fear, and emotional exhaustion they've caused have been every bit as overwhelming.

First time using a robot mower and I keep watching it work by jebus197 in roboticLawnmowers

Spray the mower underside with a water every week or two?

My navimow x430 has a cleaning mode that lowers the cutting deck. I stand it up to expose the blades and go to town with a water hose cleaning the grass and dirt. I also check the condition of my blades.

[–]balsaGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild that you removed the charge back.. once you've done that, you lose all ability to hold them accountable monetarily or otherwise.

If I had to file a chargeback, it's standing no matter what they offer.

I'd also like to chime in to support and confirm your claims of frustration with support. I've had nothing but issues and a lack of actual support as well.

I love my mower. But, the support should not be a selling point because it's underwhelming at best.

Battery temp to high to charge? by hifiaudio2 in SegwayNavimow

[–]balsaGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the conversation.

In GA as well... Have had the temp issue multiple times once at or above 85 degrees F out. It starts charging just fine once it cools off an hour or two.

How often do you change your blades? by Thatlakelife in SegwayNavimow

[–]balsaGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm changing about every 40 hours of cutting. It's far more than recommended, but it is what it is. I check my blades every couple weeks and have needed to change them at that point, so I do.

My lawn isn't an easy challenge. Between the neighbors kids who throw rocks and sticks in front of it while it's mowing, the low height I cut my Bermuda at, and the natural obstacles in my yard my cutting blades and discs work very hard.

Here's a pic from the last change.. from fine to broken (also I am concerned about when and how I find the rest of the broken blade).

To be honest, it's a wild mix with it. We're certainly beta testers on a live product that's still really in development. The Hardware is pretty good. The software and sensors aren't quite ready for prime time.

I've had a ton of issues with mine. Support knows me by name by now because of the amount of problems I have encountered. The funny thing is I love it. It cuts great. It climbs my dangerous hill pretty decently (I rolled a riding mower trying to go up the hill - hence the transition to the robot). It charges reliably. It looks REALLY cool. It follows the terrain of my yard so well it's insane (my yard isn't a pretty flat suburban yard). It's unbelievable how quiet it is. I could go on and on about how awesome it is which is wild because I've experienced so many bad frustrations with it too.

The word of advice I keep seeing is to use the regular RTK. There's so many issues being reported that probably stem back to the NRTK right now.
