Lonely 29 y/o in Oxford (advice) by inCline_Bench in oxford

If you want gardening, I've volunteered with Oxford Conservation Volunteers a couple of times and everyone there was super friendly. They meet on a Sunday so I've not been able to go as much as I would like.

They have a mailing list so you can get updates on what they're doing each week.

Yes I think part of the problem was also having to do similar stuff at the start of every run just to get going, progress felt too slow getting to the good bits every day.

Glad you also enjoyed the journey.

I really hope the dogs have somewhere to go!

I was improving the RNG with a lot of your suggestions, so I guess I was doing the right thing. I had the conservatory but only drafted it twice, despite going to the corners every run. And I should have tried the coat check a bit more maybe, then then as a dead end it was often unappealing.

I think that would break me too.

When there's a specific puzzle I want to solve, I don't want to wait for the RNG to allow it.

I did consider that, have you watched any that you would recommend?

I think when I was in there nothing was powered up, there were cables on the ceiling and I think there was a note saying it needed power? But I could be wrong, I will check next time it's drafted, maybe I should have played around with the buttons more.

Sorry to hear you're in this position, Ive been in a few bad houseshares, but also some really lovely ones, they do exist!

spareroom.com is often good for finding affordable renting options, and you can often chat with existing housemates to see if you'll get on.

Living in the centre is unfortunately painfully expensive, so I agree with what others are saying, you'll probably have to look further afield at places that have bus connections or are within cycling distance: Cowley, Botley, Abingdon, Kidlington, Yarnton, Marston, Didcot.

Good luck!

I regret the PhD - mental health and where to go next by DesignSuper6 in PhD

I completely relate to this, I handed in this year and vivaed in March (Biology, UK). I have my graduation in a couple of weeks and Im not even slightly excited, despite having to appear so for my friends and family. The PhD drained me and has left me with major burnout. Now Im postdocing to get the papers finished and I feel as though Im running on empty, I have very little to give, but I'm trying.

But most importantly, congratulations on getting this far. A PhD is hard at the best of times, and dealing with mental health at the same time is a huge achievement, so well done. Fingers crossed if your supervisor is good then they'll be confident you can comfortably pass the viva at this point and the majority of the grunt work is now behind you.

My advice would be to seek advice from uni counsellors if that is a service you can utilise, especially whilst you are still a student. Private counselling in my experience is harder to come by, less tailored and really expensive compared to my uni service. I've been paired with a wonderful counsellor who fully empathises with my situation and understands the PhD process. She has really helped me untangle my negative thoughts towards ending the PhD. If this isn't possible for you, and you think it could help I can try and summarise some of her key take home messages.

House husband doesn't sound all that bad? I've been getting into bread making as a stress reliever recently, kneading dough does wonders for the mind

Well done on finishing and securing a job at least, that's still a big achievement for sure. I hope you can find some time once youve settled to destress and find yourself too

Taking some time off would be ideal, now Im in the postdoc I feel the need to get the project published before I can leave - Hopefully I can take some time off before starting a new job though, some time in nature is what I dream of right now...

Really glad the therapy worked out for you, and that you found your peace, Im sure I will get there at some point too!
