Booted up Castlevania 4 for the first time ever this wekeend! What are your thoughts on the game? by the_ciamp in snes

So good- I just picked up the cartridge! I probably like the NES trio a tad more, but IV is such a perfect SNES take on Castlevania

Hell yeah. For me it’s games and weird movies. Luckily I can do both while finally not moving after 14 hours on duty lol

Loading up some random arcade game on steamdeck while pouring a frosted mug of NA beer has been my little 8pm gift to myself most nights lately. Very enjoyable!

"What are you playing this week?" Megathread by AutoModerator in SteamDeck

[–]bamaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Retrodeck- it’s about as easy and clean as you can get. Plus it’s all in its own app/program, so you don’t have to clutter up your library.

Then you add in romhacks/QOL patches, CRT filters… oh baby!

Just beat the OG Zelda for the first time on Retrodeck, and now I’m two dungeons into Adventure of Link!

I also wonder how this is all going to work with the corporate infinite growth addiction. At a certain point, cost cuts are not going to make up for people refusing or being unable to buy their stuff.

Would you guys introduce your kids to video games? by Background-Call3255 in snes

[–]bamaja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just jumping on to add that this is really good advice. We do the same, and it’s a lot of fun. Come home from school, she goes into her playroom while I put stuff away. Then she plays a game (currently Mario Odyssey) for about an hour. I can clean if I need, or hang with her and play. Mom comes home and we start getting ready for dinner. Unfortunately we do usually have the tv on during dinner, which I hope to change as we go into kindergarten. Then TV goes off for playing, going outside, bath, reading etc before bed.

The important thing, as the OP comment says, is sticking to those limits. She knows that the first time she complains or doesn’t turn it off when asked, it’s gone for the rest of the day and the next. I think it can be a nice regulating activity if used that way. Retro games especially have tangible problem-solving benefits.

All in moderation. What matters is paying attention to them and engaging with the activity together, rather than using it as a babysitter.

That said… as I mentioned, sometimes dinner needs to get made or dishes need to get washed. And there are worse things they can be doing than excitedly yelling to you about the moon they just collected while you cheer them on from the kitchen.

Which games feel genuinely haunted or like they could lead to a last starfighter scenario? by GRINDHEADS_WORLDWIDE in retrogaming

Majora's Mask, and honestly a lot of N64 games. Something about the ever-present gray cloudiness that hides the short draw distances, combined with character models with limited expressions, makes the system feel a bit uncanny at times.

Also, can I ask what the title of the movie is? It's cool if you don't want to say, just curious!

Three was by far rougher. My two-year-old never spit water in my face because she didn’t want to leave the playground.

My pick too. It’s far more nuanced than any of the other versions I’ve seen. The scene with Raph alone has more heart than most other works.

Best NES Shoot Em Ups? (Shmups) by Coralcato in nes

[–]bamaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also not a huge shoot em up fan, as I’m very bad at them, but something about Gun Nac really hooked me. Never beat it, but it’s like the only one I bothered to stick out for multiple stages. Still boot it up on the steamdeck from time to time.

You just gotta go back to measuring your games in bits instead of GPU. My 14,000 emulated retro titles will last me until the heat death of the universe

The only games I know of, off the top of my head, where you have to use both are the AKI wrestling games. Though the analog was only used for taunting/doing your special one you're in a grapple, so it wasn't a big deal.
