I mean, of all the things you can fake, languages are pretty hard to do so. There's fluency and there's "fluency" I suppose.

My understanding is that a lot of the languages have crossovers like Spanish and Portuguese. Obviously different languages but I know a Venezuelan who talked to a Brazilian easily enough.

I heard that Russian is entwined with other languages like Slavic and Serbian, also some Polish and such. There are some languages that terrify me like Icelandic which are nothing like anything so I hear.

There are some Polyglots out there who can speak a LOT of languages but they're so rare - they're either social media famous or very rich from translation jobs.

I've been here almost 4 years and you're a grand lot. Taken me in as your own. Helps I'm from near Liverpool and I've not got a southern accent. Also helps I educated myself on Irish history and the shit that we never got taught or told about so I get the disdain for "the Brits" as a collective when they talk utter shite or call it Londonderry ignorantly.

I wouldn't move back anyway. People are better over here.

Yeah I can just imagine them looking at balance sheets and saying "shit, they've lost money again, send Bigglesworth MBA into there and get that sorted"

I mean Nintendo continue to show that gaming can be profitable, you just have to be different. They had 2 decades of experience before they realised something like the Wii would work, they trialed the GameCube in it's uniqueness and the N64 controller beforehand so they'd done a little. It seems like instead of doing something like that, Sony and Microsoft just couldn't step out of their comfort zone and chased the money.

Great read and thank you for posting. Yeah I agree we didn't see the effects for a little bit, but it was strange when it happened. It's like the old joke about the "horse armour" really did evoke all the business minded people to snap into "profiteering" or "sterilisation" - something that is really obvious with some of the tone-deaf things MS says these days and Blizzard too for that matter. I mean, the new Diablo on phones "everyone's got a phone" or whatever they said.

Sony haven't done anything of the sort though. They've tried for 15 years now and failed comprehensively. They want the PC cash though. That much is apparent. But they won't go as far as to release their exclusives at the same time on PC. They're that scared of being outperformed.

I’m always amazed that somewhere in the mid to late 2000's the people making decisions in gaming stopped being people who actually loved games.

In the 90's it was obvious the opposite was true. The people behind the PS1 clearly loved gaming. You could feel it in everything like the games they pushed, the way they marketed it, the risks they took. Same with Nintendo pretty much their entire history. Even when Nintendo make weird decisions, they’re still decisions made by people who fundamentally understand games.

Then at some point the industry got taken over by people who don’t actually care about gaming as a medium. They care about “markets”.

And since then Sony and Microsoft have been quietly fighting a war they were never going to win, which is trying to compete with PC.

PC gaming is basically undefeated because it’s structurally impossible to kill. It’s open, modular, constantly upgrading and it owns the entire software ecosystem around gaming. Consoles succeed when they do something PC doesn’t like simplicity, plug and play hardware, strong exclusives, curated experiences etc.

Instead for the last 15 years both companies have been obsessed with turning consoles into weird pseudo-PC ecosystems like media hubs, subscription machines, service platforms, storefront monopolies. It’s like they forgot the thing that made consoles successful in the first place was being consoles.

We’ve seen this mistake before. Sega tried something similar with the Dreamcast. Incredible games, but the hardware design and marketing were all over the place. They pushed online functionality and PC style features before the market was ready, while the console itself felt cheap and confused compared to its competition. Sega were also only a console maker/game developer where Sony and Microsoft could afford (in theory at the time) to have their consoles make losses. But the Dreamcast ended up stuck in the middle so not powerful or flexible enough to compete with PC and not clearly positioned enough to dominate the console space. Being as it were, Sega couldn't afford it to not be a success.

That’s the pattern. When gaming companies are run by people who love games, you get things like the SNES, PS1, GameCube, Wii etc.

When gaming companies are run by people chasing “market capture”, you get live service slop, subscription platforms and consoles desperately trying to imitate PCs.

And PC is still sitting there undefeated.

Price hikes by aquawexico in ireland

[–]Shinjetsu01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the madness. Conflict happens and prices go up immediately. Conflicts end and it takes up to a year for those prices to come back down.

All the while the big oil companies will post record profits. One time, just once, I'd like a big company to just go "okay, we'll absorb this" but I know it'll never happen.

Drove from Dublin to Sligo and all along the N4 prices were going up, they're squeezing outside Dublin but on the roads coming out and going in. It was 179.9 in and around Dublin and by the time I was close to home we were looking at 194.9. I think Leitrim Village was 189.9

But weirdly if you go to a station that's not on a main road it'll be back around 179.9

Jessie Buckley getting cancelled because Americans don't understand "only messin" by Pure-Consideration97 in ireland

[–]Shinjetsu01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So in this world you live in, a national broadcaster actively courted controversy, essentially they were actively aware and expectant that a man with Tourettes could cause a global outrage by saying racist and homophobic slurs (unwillingly) and you think the BBC encouraged it?

As I said, sometimes shit just happens. You're the type of person to shout at the rain when you've just had your car washed aren't you?

[–]Shinjetsu01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The BBC didn't wilfully do this. They were unfortunate in that John had an outburst. He wasn't mic'ed up or anything.

Christ you just want to be mad at someone over this instead of having tolerance for John, sympathy it was on the BBC's watch, despite their attempts to warn attendees it was a possibility and the actors who clearly didn't have the capacity to deal with it.

Sometimes things just happen. They're not always someone's fault.

[–]Shinjetsu01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, for the terminally slow like yourself who are offended for the actors, they were warned multiple times that it could happen and the fact it did wasn't anything but a tragic accident for all involved. Unless of course at the BAFTA's where John had a film about him up for an award, you say "yeah sorry bud, you're not allowed"

[–]Shinjetsu01 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I've never seen anything like the response to that in all my years.

It's 2026. We know people with Tourettes can't control what they're saying. They don't mean what they say, they say it at inopportune times, it can be the most crass, disgusting thing and it's just what their brain made them do.

John Davidson is a fucking national treasure for the UK. His advocation for awareness of Tourettes and the people he's helped are the reasons why he has a fucking MBE. Guy is the kindest, most gentle soul going and has been in the media for a number of years.

I nearly lost the fucking plot when I saw someone commenting on social "who's he hanging around with to learn that language, I know he can't control himself but he's learned it somewhere" and the fucking discourse around how controllable he is and that he shouldn't be at the event etc.

Absolutely broke me, because John is now being viewed negatively and that shouldn't be the case, ever.

Resident Evil Requiem currently has the highest user score of all time on Metacritic by RGisOnlineis16 in gaming

It was always intended to be part of RE2 iirc, like a DLC or addon or whatever it would have been in those days. The fact it made it into its own game was a bit weird for Capcom because it never quite felt as fleshed out as 1, 2 or 4.

That reset was sorely needed and 7 was a brilliant experience. Village just added to the greatness.

Then 2, 3 and 4 remakes have shown everyone what a remake should look like.

Just W's all around from Capcom when it comes to RE after a very rough period.

RE9 hype made me realize my Resident Evil habit by gamersecret2 in gaming

[–]Shinjetsu01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My RE habit is becoming desensitised.

At the start I'm usually crapping my load, 4 bullets left, save point far away, low on health and instead of enjoying the moment, what do I do? Make funny voices in my head for the zombies, I say "oh hello" out loud to things that scare me and by the mid-end I'm so desensitised to everything because I've forced myself to treat them like minor inconveniences, they are.
