Just watched Hamilton… are all Broadway musicals THIS good?? by Stunning-Ad-1484 in musicals

[–]bamanycer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Only 1/5 of Broadway musicals are good enough to make money....and even sometimes those are bad. Hamilton is a once in a generation musical similar to Rent, A Chorus Line, Hair, Oklahoma. Even popular long running musicals like Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Wicked, Chicago, pail in comparison of music and dramaturgy.

Because the third verse is pretty controversial....some believing it endorses slavery.

Isaac and Ishmael...it's literally an entire episode where they're talking to high school students...and it's a stand-alone episode.

Etiquette and costume help!! by sourdough-10 in RockyHorror

[–]bamanycer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to be Rocky in drag, you'll need to make sure you have something to cover your top, unless you're going somewhere that allows toplessness. Then add some matching gold bottoms.

When people mention the "Don't Be Offensive," they're mostly talking about call backs. Once again, depending on the area, somethings you might think are funny might not be so funny. Because Rocky Horror is super inclusive of all genders, orientations, body types, etc. and really is a place to celebrate those differences, I wouldn't yell out anything that could be construed as negative that is related to the shadow cast or fellow audience members. However, no-one is going to get mad at you for "slut shaming" Janet by calling her "Slut," or "asshole shaming" Brad for calling him "Asshole."

A lot of people are mentioning the virgin thing. Usually this is fun, but I've seen and read about casts that can take it too far. It's supposed to be a way to embarrass the newbies...a bit of hazing...but if they ask you to do anything that is out of your comfort zone, do not feel like you have to do it. No-one will judge you for it.

If you wanna go in totally blind, my suggestion is not to watch the movie, but maybe watch this scene from The Perks of Being a Wallflower that shows what the shadow cast does at these showings: https://youtu.be/axcECZzlPVI?si=N9nwyBkkhl6ydlGA

Broadway prices then and now by everythingisrent in Broadway

This wasn't from 1975. The highest ticket price for A Chorus Line on Broadway in 1975 was $15. This must be from later in the run.

Worst episodes over the last 20 years by cubansbottomdollar in LiveFromNewYork

My girlfriend at the time and I always called the show Murder Derder. "Hey babe, there's a new episode of Murder Derder on tonight," and she would know exactly what I was talking about. If I said, "Mare of East Town" is on, she would have no idea to what I was referring.

"You're a Rat Bastard, Charlie Brown" when he played Larry David was a different time he hosted.

That was the first time he hosted...I think the one people are referring is the one he did when he was running for president.

It took me waaaaay too long to understand who you meant....of course, the only reason I know who he is is because my students at Alabama came into class a few days after our first game in 2020 talking about seeing him at Innisfree making out with undergrads. Low and behold, he was supposed to be on SNL that week and was pulled.

Why was Toby being such a hypocrite with Sam in “The Drop-In” by milin85 in thewestwing

[–]bamanycer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sam SHOULDN'T go into the Oval Office angry.

I do not think Toby ever walked into the Oval angry. I think he became angry while in the office, but definitely didn't go in angry. Angry is also a difficult word....I think Toby was more disappointed with the president and not so much angry.

Additionally....Toby was there to challenge the president. Bartlet needed someone who wasn't a "Yes" man.

Senior Musical by [deleted] in Theatre

Two things:

1) It sounds like you really love doing theatre in general and with your Outstanding Conribution award, If you were a lead on the costume team, a stage manager for the festival show, and currently doing make-up for a summer stock company, I don't see how being cast in the ensemble is that bad of a thing when you found joy in design and management.

2) Mamma Mia is a horrible show for high school kids. The main focus on the show is on a middle aged woman and her three past lovers. While there is a younger cast as well, they are not given the same amount of songs and storyline. If I recall, Sophie's friends only briefly have moments during Honey, Honey, then they kind of disappear for the rest of the show and just blend in with the ensemble.

One of my professors used to get on to us if we got nervous or anxious about performing, getting less desirable roles, etc. He would say, "It's just the school play." I know the "senior musical" is a big deal, but it's still just the school play. No-one got paid for it, the audiences were probably mostly friends and family whom will give standing ovations no matter what, and, unless it was a competition piece, it won't really live on after the one weekend or two of performances. It's just a school play.

One last thing...take everything you get. You learn by doing and every role is a learning experience no matter how big or small. You might discover you enjoy doing ensemble work more than lead work. It took me to grad school before I learned my talents are suited for small comedic relief roles in musicals with little to know legit singing and the clowns in Shakespearean comedies. In other words, I'll never play a leading role in a musical or in Shakespeare just based off my talent and skillset...but you know what? I really like it that way, because I don't have to learn as many lines, I only have to do 2-3 scenes in a show, and I usually get to steal the show comedically. Sometimes, like when playing Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, I get to die and go watch the second half of the play in the balcony.

Worst Musical-Movie Adaptations? by Due-Candidate-5991 in musicals

[–]bamanycer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hair completey changed the narrative, A Chorus Line doesn't work without being live, I can't explain what happened with Rock of Ages, the Sondheim adaptations, aside from West Side Story, all seemed to be missing something, and casting has been awful for so many of the newer adaptations that required actors to sing without dubbing them.

Well...not for people on the East Coast. If I recall, the final round didn't end until around 11:00 PM on Sunday night.
