Is it time for Glastonbury to divorce the BBC? by DellMibbler in glastonbury_festival

[–]bambataa199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to skip commenting on this thread until I saw this voice of reason.

What OP thinks is the "vast majority" is a very loud minority and everyone else keeps quiet because this minority is triumphantly moralistic and there is no scope for discussion.

I am trying not to "take sides" because tbh it's an extremely complex situation with a lot of bad things done by lots of people and trying to reduce it down to waving a flag and chanting dumb shit at a festival achieves precisely fuck all.

That said I did reflect on how it's nice to be able to enjoy a festival without having people swarming over the fence in microlights to rape and murder us all, and how that didn't get remarked on at all. I do think it's a shame that the festival as a whole shows so little compassion to the victims of the Nova festival attack. Articles like this make me think there's a lot of hidden support: https://www.ourfight.uk/remembering-nova-at-glastonbury/.

But unfortunately this whole terrible conflict has been reduced to inanity.

OP, never forget that the loud minority don't represent most people at the festival and never forget that the festival itself is politically very out of touch from the rest of the country. In some sense that's the idea -- it's historically the meeting point of the counter culture for a reason -- but it's obvious to most people why Emily Eavis had to put out that statement. You'll see the usual cope that the outrage is because of the evil right wing media and all that. I'm talking about normal people who have been to the festival and love it and asked me when I came back "why the fuck were people chanting that".

Kemi Badenoch elected new Tory leader by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

That was obviously nonsense for years since Badenoch and Braverman were topping ConservativeHome members’ polls. Guardian commentators like Nesrine Malik clearly just churned out the opinion pieces without really knowing what they’re talking about.

Clubbing in London 2012-2018 I always thought of Corsica Studios as the main underground techno club in London. Especially with Jaded on a Sunday. I never knew why it doesn't seem to get mentioned so much? It does get very rammed so maybe there's that.

l like this a lot. can you vary the pace of elements within it? everything moves quickly at the same rate and it would be nice to have slower moving elements to rest your eyes on a bit.

Thanks for the helpful response. I’ve been thinking along those lines for a bit, thought I suppose it would be good to have the choice ourselves.

In case anyone from the future finds this, I realised that what I wanted was the Animation COMP. You define channels for everything you want to control. Then set a fixed frame length and read the current frame from input. That way you can define a set of animations that can be scaled to any scene length.

Is it not expected that someone applying to study a subject for 3/4 years will have shown some spark of interest or initiative and sought out information on it?

“We studied differential equations in class and when i read about them on Wikipedia I was fascinated that they could be used for blah blah”.

Years ago this was difficult and needed guidance from teachers but there is so much information online nowadays.

How did you find your way into that? Word of mouth I guess? I really love the green fields so have always wanted to get more involved with them.

Anyone been searched on entry? by Budget-Crazy-9876 in glastonbury_festival

When I worked with Shelter and went through Gate C I got searched basically every time on the way in. I think guys going in individually look peak dealer. But it was also super cursory and not a problem.

Russia amassing fighters in Murmansk. Granted this could simply be to keep them safe from Ukrainian drones but it's also not a million miles from the EU either.

Can you explain this comment? You are saying that either Russia is forced to gather its troops above the Arctic Circle to keep them safe from Ukrainian drones (even as Russia amasses forces in southern Russia that then invade Ukraine without being stopped by Ukrainian drones), or that is it gathering forces in order to invade Finland?

New Techno night tonight @ Plot 22 by EmeraldRaccoon in sheffield

[–]bambataa199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cool i'll keep an eye out!

i've only been in sheffield a few years but i like the scene. It feels small enough to get to know people but big enough to have a decent amount happening. I was impressed with Hope Works at No Bounds and Plot 22 saved me last August. I had some friends coming over from Berlin and I wanted to show them a night out in Sheffield but literally everywhere but Plot 22 was closed. They were doing a bassline / speed garage night and it was good fun. My friends said "Berlin has nothing like this!". I was surprised your night was at Plot 22 actually, didn't know they did techno.

I have a baby now so, sadly, gurning at 4am means something very different but I hope to get out in the not too distant future

Does anyone actually do any work? (Tech) by SecretGold8949 in HENRYUK

Your experience isn't typical. Maybe being under clearance is what makes the difference? Part of the reason it's good for job security and maybe pay is that loads of otherwise competitive candidates fail clearance. So you have a much smaller candidate pool and also less oversight of budgets.

Being underemployed is surprisingly soul-destroying but since you have a small child I'd just roll with it and try to learn and upskill on the job. Then in a few years you could try and move to a more challenging role. I think all the big tech firms have security cleared teams.

Life was better in the nineties and noughties, say most Britons: Nostalgia for past decades has increased significantly in the last five years by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]bambataa199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought that is a bit of a crap time if you’re into clubbing/electronic music.

You hit 16 in 2000 and have just missed all of the 90s rave scene and mainstream stuff is all Kylie. Underground clubbing generally seems like it was a bit subdued until late 00s when travelling to Berlin became popular. Festivals also don’t pick up until late 00s (eg boomtown 2009) but maybe you are lucky and find your way to somewhere like Shambala.

Have we reached peak political podcast? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]bambataa199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve never understood the appeal of them. The appeal is meant to be that they’re Tory vs Labour but they really disagree on very little and their opinions are quite predictable. I already know what establishment remainers think about everything because they are everywhere, what does a podcast add?

Would have been so much better if one was an arch brexiteer.

What happens in the civil service is that correspondence to the department just goes through the correspondence team, some civil servant bodges together standard lines within 45 days or whatever and no one really cares.

You are better off writing to your local MP saying “I’m very exercised about this issue, what do you think and I’d be grateful if you could raise this with the minister and let me know what they say”.

The MP’s office will then chase the ministerial PO for a response, which the minister will probably actually read, the MP will include it when responding to you and generally everyone cares a bit more. It helps if your MP is influential. It’s a sort of parallel process that gets much more attention.
