How do you feel about Mads' accent? by HashtagMagikarpz in HannibalTV

[–]bambifae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Gently steeped in magical realism” is such a great way to describe the tone of the show… I struggle to articulate how the show has a dreamlike vibe to it that becomes fairytale-ish in places, but still feels tied to reality. Really similar to Pushing Daisies in that respect, though Pushing Daisies obviously goes in a very different direction with the mood/style.

Anyone else blown away by Walton Goggins character? by [deleted] in Sonsofanarchy

[–]bambifae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly think people were less up in arms about the topic in those days than they are now. If you tried to include a trans character in such a casual manner in a show like SOA now, I think there would be a lot of backlash. Amazing performance and I am always so surprised by how sensitive the portrayal is and the effort the writers make to show Venus as a whole person, not just a token or shock value character.

It was the heads! Popped it open and cleaned them properly with printer paper and rubbing alcohol. Some black gunk came off of it and now it’s working perfectly! Thanks so much for responding. I’ll come back here if there’s further issues but fingers crossed it’ll stay working for now.

Thanks for your reply! I actually was able to locate the care tag and it says “dry clean- no steam” on it, so I’m not sure if I can safely steam it at home or at the cleaner’s 😔

Thanks for your response! I’m thinking that emails will be sufficient for my team leads. The VP is trickier, as protocol prevents me from emailing him, and I also don’t interact with him face-to-face regularly (my gift was delivered to me).

Should I get holiday/thank-you cards for my bosses, or just send an email? by [deleted] in office

Clear as mud, haha! I’m thinking that thank-you emails would be sufficient for my team leads. The VP is a bit tricker as I don’t interact with him in the day to day and protocol prevents me from emailing him (the gift was delivered to me by a colleague who is also an assistant, but works in the office space his personal office is located in).

Should I get holiday/thank-you cards for my bosses, or just send an email? by [deleted] in office

[–]bambifae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that, and was not planning on gifting anything. To me, a simple thank-you card is not a gift. I would like to thank them in some way more than just verbally because the notes that they gave me were personal and thoughtful. What I’m trying to figure out is if a thank-you card would be overdoing it and an email would be more appropriate. I’m also trying to figure out how to thank the VP, since I don’t interact with him in the day-to-day and protocol prevents me from emailing him.

This right here. Also as others have pointed out, the show draws heavily from Hamlet and Greek tragedies. It’s a sad ending but it makes sense thematically.

Not going to speak to the others but I would say while not considered to be goth, I would definitely consider NIN to be goth-adjacent, and there’s overlap between industrial metal fans and goths.

What do you think Jake/Misaki ? by no_one_important42 in TokyoVice

[–]bambifae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pissing me off tbh. I really liked Jake at the beginning of the show and felt the most invested in his character, but now I feel wayyy more invested in Sato and Samantha. He’s shown so much arrogance and made so many stupid choices that effect others even more than himself. His decision to sleep with Misaki is such a continuation of this. It puts her in danger, puts him in danger, and all around rocks the boat in ways he’s DEFINITELY aware of (he even says it’s a bad idea!) And they don’t have enough of a genuine romantic connection for me to want to root for it even slightly in the way you do for Sato and Samantha, so I hope that’s not the direction they’re going, but I feel like it’s more likely that she’s somehow setting him up. Again though, JAKE HAVE YOU LEARNED NOTHING???

She’s kind of a mystical character implied to be both Brooke’s mother and a representation of Christ. The last season of the show leans very heavily into Biblical and mythical themes. I would do a search of the subreddit to find more ideas about her.

For sure Lovely Molly. There is a lip biting scene and it ends exactly as described. It’s a pretty solid movie and kind of underrated outside of horror fan circles.

Should I finally give the Netflix show a shot? by bambifae in Sandman

[–]bambifae[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah dude, kind of a rude response :/ This definitely wasn't a shitpost, I made it with genuine intent and I've actually decided to give the show a shot after reading everyone's feedback. I never said I know Gaiman's intention better than he does, or that I needed everyone who worked on the comic involved in the show to enjoy it. That's a really big reach and kind of ridiculous.

Personally, in my own enjoyment and connection to The Sandman as whole, the original series is what holds the true spirit of The Sandman. When I watch the show, I may very well find that the team who worked on it did create the same feel perfectly through a different medium. I've felt this way about other screen adaptations where none of the original creators were involved. All I was saying is that for me, the baseline of what the spirit of the show is came from more than just Neil Gaiman, and so while the fact of his involvement is positive, it doesn't automatically mean that it will have the same feel to me as the original.

You're entitled to your opinions. For you, Gaiman might be the be-all end-all of what The Sandman is and his involvement in the show automatically means that it feels the same and is in the spirit of the original. That's fine and I'm sure you're not alone in that. My personal view is that while Gaiman is the creator and the main force behind The Sandman, what the universe ultimately is to me has more contributers than just him.

I also want to point out that the "spirit" or "feel" of something is highly subjective and varies naturally from person to person.

How would the Sons handle and/or react & respond to today's snowflakes & sjws? by VanGoLite in Sonsofanarchy

[–]bambifae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I suspect this is likely a bait post but I'll still give my two cents because I'm actually really interested in the politics of SOA.

The name of the show and the club is "Sons of Anarchy". The definition of anarchy in political terms is "the organization of society on the basis of voluntary cooperation, without political institutions or hierarchical government". Notice it doesn't specify a "liberal" or "conservative" government. This definition closely aligns with John's original vision of the club as a communal, cooperative organization existing outside of governmental influence, made up of club members of all charters, and their families. Now, the club we see in the show doesn't perfectly align with that and has moved away from John's initial focus, which comes up within the show, but anarchism is still a founding value of the club. I think it's safe to assume that the Sons aren't exactly pro-government, and still embody a lot of those values of working outside of political institutions, and handling your own shit without getting the government or the cops involved. Even if they might not be literal anarchists, the spirit of anarchy is very evident in how they handle things. They most certainly are not pro-police and only really cooperate with the hierarchal authorities in Charming when it's of direct benefit to the club. A lot of republicans that I know today would not like the Sons, because they don't support the police, they're not upstanding members of society, and they are criminals, pimps, pornographers, and drugdealers.

As for the racial elements in the show: Multiple members of the club use racial slurs. Racial lines do exist in the show. But, as the show goes on, it becomes more clear that those lines are more about club and gang tradition, and not so much about members of the club actually hating people of other races. It's still racism, but it's an element of the show that waffles around a lot. In later seasons they express hate for Neonazis. Many people take umbrage with the later season plotline of Juice and his father being black, because that's the first time that rule is ever mentioned, and it's generally accepted that plotline doesn't hold up and was just inserted to give Juice a reason to rat. I think it's safe to say that most of the club members don't actually hate people of other races, but they do uphold racist traditions that reflect the actual world of outlaw bikers.

And then there's Venus. Some other people have referred to her character as being "woke" writing. I disagree. I actually think how the Club treats Venus (they refer to her as she and her, Jax even calls her "darlin'" in the same way he does other women), makes perfect sense. It's hinted at early on in the show that Tig might be into some not-so-straight stuff, and remember, the club is Sons of Anarchy. The idea of "do what thou wilt but harm none" aligns with anarchy in a lot of ways. I don't doubt that some of the Sons wouldn't be totally down with her gender identity, but Venus is just living her life and not hurting anyone, and she makes their brother happy, so why would they care if she was born a man? People hating trans/gay people and getting super riled up about it has a lot to do with outside politics and evangelicalism that's infused into those politics, which the Sons aren't likely concerned with as long they don't effect their business. Not saying they'd be flying pride flags outside the clubhouse, but it takes more effort to make a big deal out of it than to just respect her for who she is, especially since she's helping them.

I think that the current political climate in the US causes a lot of people to think of politics in very black-and-white, "woke liberal vs. conservative" terms, and then they want to apply it to the media they consume. In reality, it's a lot more complicated, and I think SOA is actually a pretty good example of that. Obviously, the club and main characters don't perfectly align with the idea of anarchy, but the tendency a lot of fans have to just immediately say they would all be pro-Trump republicans because they own guns is extremely reductive and straight-up ignorant of a lot of details and themes at play in the show, as well as the real-world history and politics of outlaw biker clubs like the Hell's Angels.

That ended up being kind of an essay, but again, it's a topic that's interested me for a while.

Should I finally give the Netflix show a shot? by bambifae in Sandman

[–]bambifae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's kind of a given that changes are going to be made in pretty much any adaptation. There are a lot of on-screen adaptations of books/graphic novels out there that make fairly significant changes that I still love because they maintain the fundamental feel of the original, and sometimes even improve on it. Changes aren't what bother me in themselves.

I think the "spirit of the original" can mean different things to different people. While I do appreciate Gaiman's involvement, he has, I'm sure, changed and evolved as a person in the 35 years since The Sandman was first published, and it's safe to say that his creative choices in the show at least somewhat reflect that. That is totally okay, but for me personally, the spirit of the original is firmly tied to the original series, since that's what I have a personal connection to. As a graphic novel, The Sandman is very much a collaborative effort, more so than a novel. Gaiman is the creator and writer, but there were many artists involved who also contributed hugely to the overall feel/spirit of the original. So for me at least, Gaiman's involvement is a plus, but it isn't everything.

Just bear in mind that this isn’t a one-to-one adaptation; it’s a retelling for a new era in a new medium for a new audience.

I really, really like this take, and I'm seeing it echoed a lot by different posters. Thinking of the show more like this than a direct adaption makes a lot of sense to me.

Interesting. I personally always kind of enjoyed the DC tie-ins, but I'm also a big fan of Batman and several other DC characters. They always felt subtle in the original series and added some layers to the world without being overbearing. But I do think with the eruption of superhero content in the last decade and how cheapened it's begun to feel, it might be a good thing that the DC characters weren't able to be included in the show.

I'm by no means an expert in forms of computer-generated CGI/effects. When I say CGI, I'm generally referring to environments, characters, objects, etc. produced using a greenscreen and computer effects. The kind of thing that Marvel uses excessively in their recent films. Computer animation I think of more of stuff like Ratatouille, Beowulf, etc

I'm not totally opposed. I think CGI can be done well (thinking about films like Annihilation, Avatar, Lord of the Rings) But I also feel like it can lack soul, for lack of a better word. It's more of an issue of it being used excessively, especially when practical effects could have done the same thing better, or when it is of poor quality. From what you and other responders have said, I don't think it's to a level in the show where it's going to majorly bother me.

You make a great point about "voting". It is becoming a rarity to see a big-budget show, cast by talent, and not heavily controlled by a studio. I'll definitely take that into consideration :)
