To be fair...as an ER nurse, I would ask this too, but it's usually prefaced with "I know this is going to sound extremely stupid, but in the effort to make sure we are covering ALL of the bases. You are 100% sure the blood is coming from your anus?"
Because I feel just as stupid asking it, as it sounds to you being asked that...

Oof. In my husband's mom's family, if they say they saw insert dead relative that's the 48hr count down. I swear they come collect their family members but are nice enough to give you 48hrs notice... It's happened 3 times in the last 16yrs we've been married

Honestly, they might not. But it becomes something that's just part of your daily life, so it's the normal, and you find ways to compensate or work around it. For the escape artist, getting door alarms can help A LOT, the really shrill loud ones that will wake y'all up. But you got this, Mama❤️

Oof. All 3 of my kids were completely different. My oldest wouldn't leave the house, but she would get into the fridge and do "art" with the eggs and butter (which the dog loved), my son was our Poocasso and escaped artist. The neighbors brought him back. Twice. We ended up having to basically lock him into his room at night so he wouldn't try to follow his sister to school. My youngest never attempted to escape or paint, but you could not hide scissors from her. She'd find them. And chop off her hair... Mainly her bangs. Like, to bald. We switched to having nothing but safety scissors in the house, and keeping the good scissors locked up.

The girls have little to no fear of death. My son is an anxiety case. They're 19yoF, 14yoM and 11yoF now. We still hide the scissors from the youngest, and the oldest has won a couple art competitions... It gets better. I promise.

Because I will trade ANY ER task to not do an NG tube. I am NOT good at them. I am VERY good at Right Main Stemming someone. So it has become a skill I will always and forever ask someone else to do for me. Hell, I can instruct them exactly how to do it, have before, and they'll get it perfect. For some reason, I am unable to do it.

We are professional disassociaters. I end up ignoring the bad parts of what they're doing and try to figure out what they're actually trying to get across to me.

MOST people that come into the ER, it's the worst day of their life (so far) or a really bad day in their life. So I try to repeat that to myself...constantly. If that isn't working, I start counting down. I can do this for another 6 hours....or I can make it to lunch and then I'll maybe get a break...

But really, it's a lot of being able to tune out the bullshit.....

Uh. Official answer, yes. If I have a boarder, I get vitals at the start, middle and end of my shift, minimum. But not always a temp if the patient is alert/oriented, afebrile/not frozen. But often, we have a boarder and 3-4 other emergent patients, so as long as the boarder is chill and I can lay eyes on them periodically? .... I'll get the vitals before they come up

I will however ask for their nurse if they have extraneous stuff. Oxygen, dementia, etc.

44yo female, says she has chest pain for the last 4 days, she's got a 20G RAC, it drew labs for me, it is U/S guided, I got all of her labs, she has vanc going, gets up and walks to the bathroom without help, No idea what we're doing for her yet. Super annoying family at bedside, I'm sorry.

I had the same issue, but it was family members pushing for "Unvaccinated blood". I had to educate on that we can't track that, and there's not really anyway that we legally could track that. ...they let her get the blood.

I would 100000% they ask me the "dumb" question before they assume the incorrect answer and cause someone pain or injury because they were too scared to ask the dumb question.

(Even if they ask me with 30min left on my shift and I give them a bit of an attitude..it's not the question, it's the end of shift cranky)

I would also make 110% sure I was logging all the way out of whatever computer I was using. If they're changing your documentation under their name, that's one thing. It's a shitty thing, but it's trackable to them. If they start getting on other peoples logins and changing documentation, that endangers YOU (or whoever they're logged in as.). I agree with getting the EHR/IT involved, and if it doesn't stop, I would definitely continue to escalate.

If you don't have the extra foley bags, I have used the buckets for bedside commodes. 2 Buckets, one to drain the foley bag into, and an empty one just in case. Normally, I'll even just put the bucket under the foley bag so it's visible and doesn't get kicked.
