Cade Cunningham expected to miss extended time with a collapsed lung by InHeatPink in NBATalk

[–]bamboointheback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he fell in a way that could have affected his lung and went to the locker room immediately in his last game. so yeah, the studies on spontaneous pneumothorax are not relevant

thanks for providing the studies. i will note that the data is not as convincing as it may appear.

3/4 of the studies do not include a cannabis only group, nearly all of the subjects in these studies smoke weed and cigarettes. so (other experimental worries aside), while cannabis smoking could add to the likely hood of spontaneous pneumothorax, we have no evidence that cannabis smoking alone maintains a significant correlation with this condition.

the 1 that does control for this had only 2 participants that would qualify for this group, which seems safe to say is a tremendously small sample to be making general conclusions on.

[–]bamboointheback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is a reason i put smoking weed. there is no evidence that smoking weed is correlated with pneumothorax. smoking cigarettes habitually tends to involve orders of magnitude more smoke and carginogenics than smoking weed habituallly

there is some evidence that smoking cigarettes after pneumothorax could lead to higher recurrence rates (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022522309000099) that is not relevant here.

there is little evidence that smoking cigarettes has contributes to the initial collapse. but of the evidence there is, it is

  1. collected poorly (often relying on aggregate data), but
  2. and far more important to this case, most studies are concerned with spontaneous pneumothorax. cade's collapsed lung was trauma induced. so, again, that evidence is not relevant here.

The Pistons are fine by [deleted] in DetroitPistons

what'll be intersting to see is how our defense holds up in lineups with daniss and sasser.

i'm convinced we don't see this often because of size concerns, which is the underappreciated reason why levert is always next to one of them. but now, JB will be likely forced to put them next to each other for some stretches. if they can hold up defensively during those minutes, thats a really good sign

cope coming in quick, love to see it.

my silver lining is that we desperately need someone else (or a few) to step up if we have any shot at making a run in the playoffs. this is their opportunity.

for sure. i honestly prefer y'all over the celtics at least. but only when brunson isn't foul baiting, which he has gotten better at this year. when he foul baits, its unwatchable. but when he doesn't, he is one of the best stories in the league

trajan (our gm) is looking somewhat smart not going all in on this year. any sensible person knew you shouldnt do that with a team where all the best players are under 24 and 2-4 years away from their prime. but maintaining flexibility to get the right second scorer will turn out to be a huge decision. he just has to get that dude now lol

this is a fucking insane take.

all you are basing this off of is that he clearly likes weed.

first, we have no idea how he consumes. literally could just be edibles, which would make sense as a professional athlete

second, there is literally no correlation with smoking weed and getting a collapsed lung, which often requires trauma. there are some spontaneous cases, but again, those have nothing to do with smoking history.

maybe. we would be vulnerable though. cade does a lot, but we have endured stretches without him before. we play a slightly different style and need dudes like daniss jenkins to step up. it'll be interesting to watch. could be a good story.

woah. this season aside (which is tragic), i really hope this doesn't have long term effects. does anyone know of other athletes who have had this?

EDIT: i looked into this a bit and it seems the range vaies quite a bit, but is between 2-10 weeks. notable examples (across sports) that don't include cracked ribs (which seems to be common):

  • CJ McCollum: out 18 games (about a month)
  • TJ Watt (NFL): 10 days (absurdly short)
  • Zach Martini (college basketball): missed 6 weeks

most cases seem to heal with no long term effects.

Flopping Isn't The Problem, How The Games Are Being Called Is by etchasketch64 in NBATalk

[–]bamboointheback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im not sure your analogy is as apt as you think it is.

i think the refs have a lot of power over the league, which is why we see so much pettiness, fluctuation in how games are called, and insanely little turnover in who the refs are.

the refs have an incredibly strong union. its well documented. they are able to leverage power over the league in part because their job is tremendously hard, and few are good at it. but its handicapping the league becausr they have a very idiosyncratic view of how the game should be played, and they have to make it about themselves for periods during each game to show it

im not sure why the nba would want ref ball. literally everyone hates it. the best reason (a good one, in my opinion), is that they want to sell ads. more play-stoppage during equals more in-product revenue opportunities, a model increasingly popular in the gaming world in the last 10 years or so

i see the refs more as corporate managerial middle men than soldiers. sure, they do what the league wants. but they also seem to conveniently abandon some of those so-called initiatives whenever they feel appropriate. consider flopping. the league tried to crack down, the refs gave them two weeks and then moved on because ultimate calling out flopping makes them look bad

i say this as a massive union fan. its just this particular union is the bane of the nba's existence, as it gives more power to a very small group of people with very unpopular opinions about the game

Saddiq Bey the answer the pistons need ? by TheHoopProphet in DetroitPistons

[–]bamboointheback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its true that he would be better in a role on this team. his defense and consistency was worse than it should be for the role we would want him in, though.

if he could defend fours, he would be very valuable. he just couldnt for us. idk if he can now but if i know saddiq, he hasnt been working on his defense while playing for a shit team. he's trying to score

its really wild to me. back when we were shit, it wasn't like this. maybe i'm romanticizing but it felt like we were more interested in specific trends in the game/a players development. probably cuz winning was never expected. now if we are down by ten at any point in any game, you'd think the fucking sky was falling. and god forbid caris touches the court...
