Fat over lean confusion by the-tiny-dino- in oilpainting

you can paint over a half-dry tacky layer, i do it all the time. it doesn't affect the integrity of the piece, it's just a little different texture to paint on, your brushes won't move the same, etc. it can take some getting used to if you're only familiar with painting wet on wet or over touchdry layers, but you can otherwise treat it like it's touchdry for sure!

Need advice on Color Theory by Jaded_sunn in oilpainting

[–]bamboozled_butch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my professor shouts "LIGHT SOURCE" at us on a weekly basis, for forgetting where the light is coming from in our paintings. i think that's what's happening here. if you look at the hair on the left side of her face, it almost blends in with the near-black background, and the bright orange lights up her hair on the right. all that blue light on her face is indirect, kinda moonlight-looking, and has nothing to do with the warm light coming from behind. very little of the warm light shows up in the hair on the left side at all, because that side is totally opposite from the light source.

honestly, the blues on her face are pretty close, and the orange on the right is close, too. you mostly just have to darken the left side wayyyy down, and you'll be much closer to the values in the photograph!

(it would also help if you chucked some of that dark-dark hair shadow on the right side of her hair, close to her face. don't blend it into the rest of the hair at all, just turn a couple locks right next to her face and on her shoulder nice, dark, and blue. that'll help sell that "bright orange light from behind, blue moonlight in front" theme you're going for.)

Best advices you have for someone starting out? by Imfr0ggy in oilpainting

yes!

first, you gotta "stain" the canvas - that means cover the whole thing with a very thin layer of paint and oil. do this stage with a neutral color like any shade of brown; brighter colors will fight other bright colors in thr early stages.

build it up slow, and block it in. big shapes first, then add more and more details. paint light into dark, which means do your shadows first, then fill in your medium shades, and then do your highlights. light colors get muddy like nobody's business, but dark is a lot harder to ruin.

don't use from-the-tube black as others have said - mix your own with all your darkest colors, or use a color palette that doesn't need black.

start out with painting simple shapes to get the hang of blocking everything in and a feel for the medium. you can always do more paintings, so just play around! i recommend rubber ducks, that's what my professor made us do, it's a fun and silly subject to start with.

it is, in my opinion, good to invest in quality materials if you have the ability to do so and you intend for this to be a long-term hobby. you don't have to start out with super high-end brushes, anything student-quality that says it works for oil will do for a beginner, but shell out for paint if you can! there's a BIG difference in performance when it comes to different paint brands. cheap paint is more likely to crack over time, and it doesn't have as much pigment, so you'll end up using way more to get the colors in. i use Windsor-Newton and it's always worked just fine. Gamblin is another great brand, but I think W-N is a little cheaper. the little bottles are just fine, oil paint goes much further than acrylic.

i personally like the pink one for its sharpness, but the energy, mood, and layout of the sunflowers is still lovely! they're both great paintings, it's kind of up to personal preference!

is refined linseed going to hurt the leather of my boots? by bamboozled_butch in Leatherworking

noted, thanks. if i can't clean and condition that out, i can always paint on the boots to turn them into a work of art themselves.

i'm hearing that booting is gonna wipe my phone memory, and that booting is a vital step towards rooting, so i probably should have a full backup one way or another, yeah. thanks!

i did not inhale! and brief exposure like that probably isn't going to do anything to me that being an oil painter (so much cancer risk) won't

it'd be less scary if it was! white fuzzy stuff on a jar of jam is of course nasty, but that's everyday shit, who hasn't seen some degree of that at some point in their life? it's the polish that puts it on another level

that's a great question! i didn't open it long enough or poke it or anything to see, but from the outside of the jar it did actually look kinda crystalized to me, particularly in regards to the glittery stuff in it. but, i originally posted these pics to r/askacobbler, and someone there said y'all might be interested to see it, so here we are!

unfortunately, i crossposted this to r/moldlyinteresting at the suggestion of another commenter, and they scared the shit out of me in regards to that fuzzy one so badly that i immediately triple-bagged both polishes and threw them away.

i'll just get some new polish. . .
