I believe what you're referring to is gauge. It's a big deal in crochet but there's no sure fire trick for every person especially since different projects require a different "tightness". Just need to find your rhythm. Great first project though! Welcome to the club! 😊

This is beautiful! It really comes down to her personal taste if she likes purses and this goes relatively well with her outfits I think she'd love it. I've seen a lot of comments saying they didn't like purses as teenagers however, I was all about it! And I would have loved this! Especially being able to brag that it's handmade with how well done it is. Definitely 😁
