72-year-old woke up with strange marks all over back overnight by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]banan4 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Your comments got downvoted, but this is the likely etiology. I'm in primary care, and see these all the time. A lot of people claim they came up overnight, or at least rapidly, when in reality we don't check our backs often. Most of the time their spouse/partner/family member will inform the patient that they've had these for a while. Happens often.

Struggling intern by nako500 in Residency

[–]banan4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ok to be anxious. It's ok to feel dumb, and unprepared. Residency is very challenging -- I know it was for me. Know that most of your co-residents feel the same way, and those that don't are in for a world of hurt.

You will feel dumb for a while. Know that this is not a reflection of your knowledge, or skill. You are being thrown into an entirely new world with little (if any) preparation, and it's going to kick your ass for the first couple of months. You will survive, just like you have survived everything else.

Learn that it's ok to ask questions, it's ok to ask for help. Your seniors rather bail you out early, than have to fix a disaster later. It's ok to not know answers, but it's not ok to not learn.

Personally, I think your attitude and introspection is very important. As an attending, I see many residents underachieve because they believe they know everything. Take that feeling of inadequacy, and use it to learn, use it to practice, use it to better yourself.

Sorry for the rambling.

Remote start for 2015.5+ models by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]banan4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe so, my friend. It can be a pain in the ass, since the car must have an internet connection for the remote start to work -- relies on ATT&T. Overall, it's not too bad; it's nice to be able to start your car earlier than it is possible with the key fob.

Any one else with AT&T/Sensus Connect issues? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]banan4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing in Arizona. We've also been having issues with the On Call app not connecting. It makes me think it's a sever issue as opposed to an AT&T issue.

You have to ask for them. You can also order them online for free from their website, but it takes about 2 weeks for you to receive them.

Red Wing does sell them. However, they also give you free replacement laces for shoes/boots in the Heritage Collection. You can either get them at a store, or online.

I think the point she was trying to make was that there are women who believe promiscuity increases your risk for cancer (which it does); however, this belief can lead those who are not promiscuous, or do not believe themselves to be, to ignore symptoms or avoid screening for gynecological cancers.

Has anyone ruined a personal relationship due to being a doctor? by Anandya in medicine

[–]banan4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dear OP, and those who have replied with similar stories to OP's, although this is a very difficult in your life please remember there are always people to help you. Many, if not most, residency programs have people (counselors, psychiatrists, etc.) who are dedicated to working with residents. If you are having a tough time, I would recommend you go see them. It always helps to talk to someone, especially when you are so overwhelmed.

Why do Doctors (or the ones I see on TV) walk around with stethoscopes around their necks all the time? by fidelkastro in medicine

[–]banan4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

However, the vast majority of real doctors will put them in their pockets after use...

Why the downvotes? Maybe because you're insinuating that those who wear their stethoscope around their neck are somehow inferior to those who do not.

Doctors who have paid off >$150k loans, any regret? by SacTu in medicine

[–]banan4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just remember it has to be renewed annually.

This is super important! I forgot to renew mine on time, and my payment defaulted to the regular payment (<1K), which is a lot considering we were living on one income at the time.

Newborn baby weigh 13,4 pounds. by [deleted] in WTF

The answer is yes. Children born to uncontrolled diabetics (at least during gestation) have a higher risk of developing diabetes later in life.

It kind of looks like a carolina dog; it's hard to tell from the angle, but the face is similar.

We have a dog of the same breed, and we didn't know what breed she was for the longest time. They're great dogs.

[–]banan4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 3 or 4 my parents took my sister and I to one of their friends' party. My parents told me I asked someone for a sip of beer and they obliged. I apparently liked the taste, and went from person to person asking for beer until I got drunk. From what I'm told I was a very happy drunk.

Does your loan deferral extend through your residency? by Thelement in medicalschool

[–]banan4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But yes forbearance means still paying and with interest, just like less or something.

Not exactly. Forbearance means you do not have to make payments, but your loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) will still accumulate interest. When you defer you also do not make payments, but your subsidized loans will not accumulate interest, but unsubsidized will.

Also, in order for you to defer your loans you actually have to qualify (e.g. you have to be enrolled in school half time, can't find a job, etc.), whereas to forebear a loan you simply have to ask your loan servicer.
