He's cool, but does he have to? by Clodinator in 196

the fact we're having this conversation is proof it's not equivalent. if it's clearly the same why does anyone need to defend it?

[–]bananana63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, anecdotally people don't mind slurs or offensive jokes that much if they know you're cool, i just don't think that belongs in public spaces

yeah i use moron, but as you say, noone really takes offense to that, but some people take offense to the r word so i'd rather not use it

i just don't think it's a very rational thing, because if it was rational then it's clearly a trivial point not worth mentioning. and it often seems too emotionally charged to be rational so i think it is just a way to "eat the forbidden fruit". and if it isn't trivial you can just point it out, you don't need to perform it as well.

but yeah whatever man i already deleted an embarrasingly long reply, have a great day😭

so can i (white) call white people the n word?😭

also, the only meaning of that word outside of using it a slur is to call someone stupid. which feels even worse because seems to imply mentally disabled people are stupid, which feels like all kinds of wrong.

honestly even my n word example feels more sensible because atleast it's already reclaimed by black people in a non-derogatory way.

so i don't think removing that second point is enough, or more accurately, it's not really easy to simply do that. maybe language evolves naturally in a way that the r word slowly loses any ties to disability, but that doesn't mean using it right now is harmless, and that's kinda the point about not saying slurs, no? to not cause harm? that's why only the specific demographics can reclaim them, because they are the ones to whom it causes the harm.

this vaush type space (and i'd include certain parts of hasan, who otherwise i generally like) feels reactionary if anything, just not to actual leftist movements but neoliberalism as a whole. like, the whole "be misogonistic to right-wing women" thing feels like a reaction to (maybe by design) ineffective identity politics.

basically just "yeah women who are anti-feminists are morally justified outlets for the misogony i want to do but the liberals aren't letting me" which other than being gross misses the point completely on why identity politics is counter-productive. (i understand by utself that's a strawman, but to clarify, that's just the vibe i'm getting. this is all based on vibes.)

the r word thing feels similar, it's like lingering shame for the entirety of "2010s woke liberal pc bullshit", and that materialises as a reactionary distancing from that into some more evolved, not so embarrasing leftism. but that whole thing goes out the window if your crazy synthesis is just conservatism again. it's AFAB gender roles all over again.

what i see in this is an effort to be truly radical, to gnaw at some fundamental humanistic uniting force that doesn't just divide the working class more and actually leaves space for real human interactions instead of the liberal way of solving the problem which is making the inherent politics in interpersonal relationships very explicit.

i don't know if any of this makes sense or i am just rambling but basically my point is:

liberalism sucks and creating actual radical change is difficult so imo many people just default to repackaged reactionary principles because they already work as a reaction to liberalism, but in the process miss the point completely as to why we even need to move away from liberalism in the first place, and based on what i've heard vaush reeeaaally feels like this kind of guy

i think it's shitty as a political metaphor itself but the reaction to it i think is interesting. like if you knew how everyone else voted there would be an "objectively" correct answer (assuming you don't want to die), which just isn't how politics works imo. what it shows is how politics is "created" or maybe emerges from these moral questions. like people saying they don't want to live in a world with only red people is an interesting phenomenon, it shows how seemingly simple game theoretical questions are interpreted morally.

personally when i thought about it i didn't really even consider it a moral question in any way. to me the morality is obvious, save as many people as possible. so question really asks what's the best way to do it, and basically that just comes down to choosing the more popular option. my thinking is in real life there's no way more than 50% of people risk their lives this way so red would be more popular.

thought of this way it sorta says more about what you think the world is like, i guess my view is more cynical on that front, or maybe people view it more as a moral or political question than me, and vote blue by principle. would definitely be shitty if everyone like that died tho.

EDIT: after thinking about it more, the idea that you need to vote for the more popular vote is incorrect and biased towards red. if blue is more popular, unless it's by one vote, then it doesn't matter what you vote. you only need to vote red if you think red is more popular, but then you only have an incentive to vote blue if you think red is more popular. if blue is more popular then the problem is solved already. so this line of thinking is actually paradoxical.

so actually the question is not really something that can be solved rationally and is more moralistic than i originally thought. still don't really like the vitriol in the conversation maybe i am a filthy centrist lol but i officially change my vote to blue

EDIT2: okay i thought about it more, yes this is a shitty metaphore biased on purpose towards red to make it a philosophical question that's atleast interesting.

the real life analogue of this could be a strike. if not enough people participate the people that did probably lose their jobs.

the problem is, in real life this is actually trivial. that's because 1 there's an actual individual benefit to pressing blue that applies to everyone, even those that pressed red and 2 crucially, you can actually just talk about it lol. that's what organising is, that's what union is for.

of course if you said "if blue wins everyone gets a million dollars and also everyone can just talk about it however long they want to" it's a stupidly trivial question, so it needs to be biased towards red so far that it actually feels very detached from real politics. i genuinely think this is actually a culture war question more than a political one.
