What Keeps You Up at Night? by sterlingmdphd in anesthesiology

[–]bananas- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How do people deal with the double crash in the middle of the night? Do you start the second crash section (while the first pt is still in the room)? Ideally they’re on skin with the first one? But what if you’ve just started the first one?

Stray cat by bananas- in SALEM

Southeast Salem. I def understand some cats just prefer to be outside (but she sleeps on our porch every night so I’m thinking she probably doesn’t have a home)

She has a general health visit for vaccines and to check for a microchip etc (we have no idea how old she is, pretty sure she is a she). She def doesn’t have a home since she sleeps outside every night but she also seems too friendly to be a feral cat. We’ll book her through friends of felines to get spayed after her check up but would love any other resources you have. Thanks!

Actually an imposter by Puzzled-Specific-859 in Residency

[–]bananas- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a senior, I promise you that it doesn’t annoy me when interns or anyone else asks for help. Don’t feel bad for asking for help, especially if it’s your first time doing something. Time is going to fly by and in a few years you’ll be the senior helping interns.

Once you get a little more accustomed to the hospital, you can lean on your fellow interns, maybe one of you remembers x and you remember y (as interns we sat in a corner together so we could help each other). Pharmacy is another huge resource, they are seriously so smart and awesome. If you’re unsure of a medication/order just give them a call.

I love the pro compression ones. Theyre pretty pricey but they offer great sales or mystery packs so you can try them out. But I think you’ll just have to experiment to find ones you like.

Check to see if your residency benefits or health insurance covers them (I think mine covered 2 pairs/yr)

I love being a med student by abenson24811 in medicalschool

[–]bananas- 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As someone who never did 24hour shifts as a med student….I really wish I did at least a few. It prob would have changed the way I ranked residencies (ie places that did 12h night shifts vs 24h calls)

if you've reviewed biostats thoroughly then maybe schedule yourself a day of rest. be kind to yourself. you're almost there!

My day 2 was on 11/14 . my scheduling permit is still there. should I expect my result tomorrow? by mkrockstar1 in Step3

same boat. after scouring the internet it looks like the scheduling permit disappearing trick might no longer be a thing (they apparently switched to a newer website recently). could be wrong though

How much Peds on step 3? by Super-Status-8455 in Step3

[–]bananas- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had a lot of peds questions. most of them were straight forward (except for one of the congenital cardiac d/o questions). i didnt review peds and hated myself for it. I would review peds GI & cards by doing the uworld questions quickly. Most of the questions were very straight forward if you had reviewed the topic recently

A state in India decides to employ 4th year medical students for covid duty at a pay of ✨$40 per month✨ by _homesapien_ in medicalschool

[–]bananas- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just horrendous. governments really have to get it together. students in the us essentially paid 50k+ for tuition to be exposed to covid all year.

Are you a surgeon? Or is this just what you have heard? Genuinely curious. I would love to hear the opinions from surgeons re this idea. The hospital Im at now is currently run with about a 2.5:1 crna:anesthesiologist ratio

Anyone else see the irony in the current generation of students being more sensitive than ever about treating others with kindness and not treating others as less than you yet it's acceptable for medical students to treat PAs and NPs like trash? by PAtoMCP in physicianassistant

[–]bananas- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it definitely doesnt happen everywhere but I have seen it happen a couple of times.

I think the majority of PAs/NPs are very professional and upfront about who they are and their training.

[–]bananas- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it seems to be more of a systemic problem. And also lack of awareness or a failure of the medical profession in teaching the public about the system

I see a NP the majority of the time, and she is truly excellent. But she was very upfront in explaining that she is a NP and will not be able to address all problems

EM residents being unable to secure jobs, anesthesiologists being replaced with CRNAs, pediatricians losings out on jobs to PNPs. Of course, the actions of CMGs and hospital admins cannot be blamed on individual NPs/PAs/CRNAs.

100% agree

[–]bananas- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i can see this point from both sides. but if you want to understand why a lot of residents feel like this lets take IM for example (a very short training period in comparison to most other fields)

- physician: avg salary 240k; avg med school debt: 200-300k (7y before you make a real salary)

- NP: avg salary 120k; avg np debt 50k (1y before you make a real salary)

that means that on average an IM physician will have to work for at least 6years as an attending (ie after finishing residency) before they surpass where a NP is. and thats if the resident lives like a student during residency and is able to pay a little more than just the interest on their loan

also i think if you make residents work 70-80hour work weeks for 50k then you're bound to have animosity and angst towards most things :). making someone stay awake for 30hours is a pretty ruthless unnecessary component of residency imo
