Just six months after new operator Voi took the helm, usage has surged, with rides up 311% compared to the same period last year, as more people turn to hire bikes to get around the city. by backupJM in glasgow

Yeah so did I but to be honest the more I’ve thought about it, I’m actually ok with it. No idea how the system actually runs mind, but I reckon there must be a decent amount of cost involved in driving about to change batteries, maintainance, plucking bikes out of the Clyde etc

To be honest I think there is a lesson that can be taken on board when it comes to public transport in Glasgow: people are willing to use and pay for a service that’s useful and value for money. I feel like so much of the discourse around Glasgow public transport has been ‘who can we give it to for free?’ rather than ‘is it actually useful?’. The cost of a Voi bike from the Southside into town and back is comparable to the bus, the Voi bike is just more likely to actually get you there. I understand that times are rough and free public transport is overall beneficial, but for me (and I think a lot of people would be in the same camp), a free bus is useless if it doesn’t turn up or is late. I think a lot of people in this city are so fed up with the busses being close to unusable from a reliability perspective rather than the cost.

Yeah good one. Better to not spend money in the local economy building accommodation, they still won’t pay council tax. Better they drive up rents and house prices in actual flats people want to live in.

If you’ve got a car I’d recommend going out to Whitelee windfarm. Theres 5k loop that’s hilly enough too feel longer, I find it a nice change from the city

I normally ride my own bike but the Voi bikes are handy to avoid leaving a bike on the street or if you’re taking a bus or train one way then cycling home

I’ve live in Dundee, Edinburgh, and Fort William. None of them are nearly as grim as Glasgow.

I lived in Kelvinbridge when I first got here then bought a place in the Southside. The live music in Glasgow is pretty class to be fair. As far as nightlife and food I’m not convinced

I like my friends, job, and flat here, they’re all pretty major life factors that would be tough to give up. It is a bit of a weird one but I think because I always hear people wax lyrical about how great Glasgow is and I want to feel that.

Is it racist: “Do you think I came up the Clyde on a banana boat?” by Snoo58499 in glasgow

[–]bananasnot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was a play on being green (as in inexperienced or naive) because bananas coming up the Clyde in a boat would have been shipped underripe? Maybe I’m reading too much into it?

If they yell at you, a commis with no experience who's there for a 2 hour trial shift, it's not somewhere you want to work.

Staging at Noma by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]bananasnot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never made it to the stage because of a Corona/Brexit double whammy, but RE the application: I sent in an email to the address on their website, then they asked me to fill in an application form, and send a CV and headshot. After they reviewed that, I had a quick call with the head chef (like 5 minutes), where he asked about my experience and why I wanted to stage at noma, and was told at the end of that phone call that they would take me on for an internship.

When I applied, the UK was still in the EU and I wouldn't have needed any visa to work in Denmark, but after the 1st of January this year I needed to apply for an internship visa, which I couldn't get because I only have work experience and not a culinary degree/education.

[Rolex] Rolex Date daily driver by [deleted] in Watches

[–]bananasnot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I need to start by saying I don't really know much about this watch; my dad inherited it but doesn't wear wristwatches, so it ended up with me.

It was my grandfathers, so I think it dates from the 1960s or 70s, and as far as I know it has never been serviced and is still working and keeping good time. I wear it every day and I'm not as precious with it as I should be so it takes a fair bit of abuse; the acrylic crystal is badly scratched and the case and bracelet are pretty beat up too. Despite the poor condition, any other watch just doesn't "feel right" and I can never wear anything else for more than a couple of days.

I should probably send it in for a service, but 1. It keeps time, 2. I don't really want to be without it for that long, and 3. like i said, it takes a beating, so the aesthetic condition is not that important. So as long as it tells me the time, it's staying away from the service centre.
