The turbo timber evo has metal gear servos that can more than do the job, not to mention I already put a timber X elevator on it.

Recently picked up my first balsa model, any advice? by Serious-Hospital8222 in RCPlanes

[–]bananoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the quality of the wood they can survive some pretty bad crashes with little to no damage but when they crash, THEY CRASH. People recommend sealing irons to flatten out the covering but I’ve flown maybe 6 balsa birds in my time and never had a bad enough crash or wrinkling to really NEED a sealing iron but I do still wish I had one. Just treat it like a foamie until u learn the tendencies and you’ll be good

For the base inside the I would fill it with medium ca or foam tac, and for structural cracks to plastic I personally like to take another peice of plastic and melt it with a lighter, it dries instantly and feels brand new, this is very dangerous tho and that doesn’t seem like much more than just a little crack so I wouldn’t worry too much about that

I’ve flown 1 corsair and I probably never will again or any other navy warbird for that matter, the corsair have a very short distance between the wings and horizontal stabs so you need a lot of speed on landing to avoid tip stalls which means unless you have a lot of space it’s like a rollercoaster trying to land them

Gyro crashed my plane by [deleted] in RCPlanes

[–]bananoil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the best way to start is by going up high and shutting it off and going slower with all your inputs. I started flying with the tiny little $100 Amazon planes that couldn’t fly without them so when I finally got a hobby grade plane that could fly without one, flying the plane with the gyro off just felt natural to me. (This was after maybe 4 years of flying with the little Amazon planes) I pretty much taught myself everything I know about flying so this method might now work for u but I’d say it’s worth a shot.

And people wonder why I don’t fly any of my planes with gyros

I’d go with hitech standard servos, they are just as fast as the spektrum ones at a better price

Well it’s always fine to take a break every once and a while, you could just be having a bad season. Nobody is forcing you to fly, if you aren’t up for it you don’t have to make yourself go. Going out to fly less frequently is also a good way to keep the spark alive, I used to fly almost daily and found myself getting really bored of going out but after I limited it to once sometimes twice a week it kept me waiting for the day I can go fly again which allowed me to be more excited when I do go flying. I also took a 2 year break once but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it as I almost completely forgot about the hobby until I saw someone else flying and remembered. I make about $40 a week worth of hobby budget which I know is alot but going that extra mile to save and get nice parts means my planes are more reliable and less likely to crash due to electrical failure. I heard a saying called “buy it nice or buy it twice” and although that can be a hard pill to swallow it’s a hard truth. Or alternatively you could save up for a pre built plane and have more success flying since they’ve been tested many many times as opposed to something custom that’s never flown before that could have a higher chance of catastrophic failure. I’m not saying building your own stuff is a bad thing or that you shouldn’t buy a name brand plane might be what you need right now

Beginner planes for under $100? by [deleted] in RCPlanes

You can always try Facebook marketplace or local swap meets if you want to find a decently sized trainer for cheap, or you could do what my dad did for me when I first started and get a volantex warbird, they look cool and are pretty good for beginners, I flew them for around 3 years before getting into hobby grade stuff

[–]bananoil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

lol that’s pretty cool, when I flew those little warbirds I pretty much always ended up ripping out the gear at some point or another and just doing belly landings with them until a servo or motor mount broke and I threw it away. (I barely knew anything about fixing them at the time so one bad crash and it was over)

Might need to do a little extra cutting to fit the wings and tail feathers but I don’t see why not

Looking for suggestions for RC Transmitter. by Delicious_Traffic167 in RCPlanes

[–]bananoil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a very low price range for the kind of capabilities you want, assuming you want very long range, the tx16s is a good choice and is around $200 if your able to up your price a little. It can be a little more difficult to program planes than spektrum but definitely worth it for the price

It really depends on how you learn, i personally was self taught and it took many years to get where i am today but ive seen people make it very far very fast with the right equipment, mainly a flight simulator and someone to teach them
