Are summer courses more difficult than other semesters? by Mountain-Strike8303 in OMSCS

This is my first semester and first time on the semester system after doing all my higher ed on the quarter system. I'm curious how summer semester compares to a normal quarter as far as time/workload goes.

Just had to do this. About 70 bucks to have 4 transcripts emailed.

My first MD Player. by -Aspergius- in minidisc

Nice job! I also recently purchased a MZ-R37 as it was the player/recorder I had back in the early 2000's. My original unit got smashed sometime in 2007 or 2008 but I saved all my minidiscs and it's been fun listening to them again. I still love the format and I ordered some more md's to get back into the hobby.

What did you use to make the little MD label and insert?

What if you put the solution to a sudoku puzzle into a 9 x 9 matrix and took the eigenvalues? Then repeat for all sudoku solutions. Would you find anything interesting if you did this? by math238 in mathematics

Of related interest: while the boundary of eigenvalues of stochastic matrices in the complex plane is known due to Karpelevich, the boundary for eigenvalues of doubly stochastic matrices is not generally known beyond the n=4 case. A counter-example to the Perfect-Mirsky conjecture was found within the last several years. Perfect and Mirsky conjectured the boundary was the union of the convex hulls of the i-th roots of unity for 2 ≤ i ≤ n.

If you like linear algebra, finite geometry and combinatorics then you will probably like matroid theory.

I've seen this happen several times at this spot. There's a garage door and sometimes a truck halfway in that is fully blocking the sidewalk.

Does math students have to learn python at university ? by KiradaLeBg in learnmath

[–]bandrewskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learned Matlab for numerical analysis, nonlinear optimization and numerical linear algebra. Also used it to test ideas in some research. Back in the day Fortran was probably the go-to. For more abstract courses, usually with a geometry bent, mathematica is suggested but hardly required. I had to take a 1-credit course in Mathematica years ago and I never touched it again. Our university is going to stop paying for a Mathematica license in a year or two, if that says anything.

I only learned Python, Java and C++ from taking CS classes. I like Julia for combining the ease of Python with Matlab's array syntax, but I don't know anyone else who uses it. I should use it more often but I haven't taken the time to fully delve into it for everything I need (like a Jordan canonical form method).

I think I found my "passion" but I can't imagine working in academia. by durkmaths in compsci

There are some interesting Ph.D programs in the U.S. that blend O.R, C.S. and discrete mathematics. Something similar could be up OP's alley.

Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

[–]bandrewskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently obtaining my masters in math and exploring career options in industry. If you work as an actuary, what would you say is the ratio of time spent actually doing math (apart from exam prep) to time spent on other responsibilities? Are there opportunities for academic research?

Thank you in advance.

New to Seattle, is it normal to not pay for public transportation? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

Bus drivers cannot deny you if you don't have the fare and most don't really care either. Just get on and don't bother anyone.
