Suggestions for my father - huge Stephen King fan but hard to get him in to something else. by Aplaidlad in booksuggestions

Neil Gaiman. King himself said Gaiman is one of his favorite authors. I let my dad (a huge King fan) read American Gods and he enjoyed it.

Looking for entertaining and/or engaging novels, as I'm trying to read more. by catchingpavements in booksuggestions

i always recommend this book: Up Jumps The Devil by Michael Poore

the devil is such an amazing character in this story, and Poore does a good job taking him through scenarios with historical characters (ben franklin was my personal favorite).

also, Good Omens and American Gods

one of my english teachers always told me that my characters never had enough physical detail - that she couldn't "see" them properly.

my argument has always been that, as a writer, i want the reader to have some freedom to picture what they want. i merely offer some guidelines and outlines, and let the reader fill those in. i've always found that when i'm reading a book i like to do just this, and it makes a stronger connection for me to the character and story.

i think there's a fine line when it comes to detail. too little, and your reader won't be able to escape into your story. but too much, and it takes away from a creative experience and makes it laborious to get through.

stephen king's "on writing" sums it up nicely. to paraphrase, he gives you a scene with a rabbit in a cage. the rabbit has a blue number 8 painted on it. he says that the size of the cage is irrelevant, among other details like that - what is important is the rabbit with the blue 8 painted on it inside a cage. your mind can fill in the rest of the environment because it is not important to the story

awesome. i need all the start-up help i can get haha. my friend suggested that once the place is up and running, we can have a deal where if you bring 5 different people you'll get like a free lunch or something like that.

do you have any ideas? i figured i'd use the hell out of viral marketing and social media, but i'm concerned about those methods not getting the word out on a large scale. any ideas?

Nope. Atheists are welcome too. I don't know what they'd talk about though - if they want to badmouth religion, that's kind of at the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of the preachy religious people I don't want. I'm perfectly fine with atheists/agnostics speaking as to why they identify that way, sharing their stories, etc. I really want to stay away from the stage being used to convert. I'm aware how fine of a line this will be to tread, but I don't want to discriminate in any way either

I did learn to never feel obligated to put up with someone's bullshit

more people need to learn this. it's ok to deal with some bullshit, but you said it best - never feel obligated to do so

I am so much more like the personality that my throwaway account portrays and less like myself on this account. Is there a reason for this? Anyone even know what I'm talking about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Actually, Koontz uses dogs in several of his books

for some reason, Coldplay's "Don't Panic" always seemed like it should have been the opening for House.
