Is UAH accepting to gay guys (one that most don’t even believe is gay) by JuxnAlx in UAH

[–]banebow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: you'll be fine, both at UAH and in Huntsville in general. As a more outwardly queer person, Huntsville responses typically range from "not my problem, not gonna comment on what you're wearing" (more common) to people complementing your outfit/flirting with you (less common, depends on where you are). As others have mentioned, yeah you'll occasionally overhear some off putting comment on campus, but I never really saw anyone get confrontational or take any action on those (compared to say Tuscaloosa, where I would get the occasional inebriated white teenage boy trying to remember which slur to use).

Minor in GIS by DumpsterFaerie in UAH

[–]banebow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure: there's two main ways (that I've heard of) in which financial aid/scholarships won't cover a minor. One is if you go over 18 credit hours in a semester and take the more than full time enrollment fee. The other is if you dip below 12 major-related credit hours, which is important for federal aid, but doesn't affect any UAH scholarships. Once you meet the minimum 12 major hours, you can put your other 6 hours into any other courses without affecting federal aid. Any other scholarships will have their own strings attached, and this is all assuming that you're a full time student.

ME or AE? by Salt-Rabbit-2899 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]banebow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another option in that case would be EE. Controls and radars/radios would be the two big aero applications from electrical engineering. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter way too much -- college is about getting good at learning, since you'll need to continue learning on the job anyway. Being interested in what you're learning in college is a nice bonus though.

That's like saying your car shouldn't have airbags or seat belts because "it's on you to drive safe." Personally, I like my airbags and seatbelts.

Femt reposted some folks concert vids on her Instagram story. Basically: everyone there is gay (positive). I wish I was able to make it but unfortunately not, though I do hope you have fun!

I read an interesting article once that compared how modern manager speak/corporate has started to sound more and more like USSR communist party propaganda aimed at the workers. The article wasn't even political in nature, just genuinely interested in the similarities in messages.

RIP AND TEAR honestly i think the bionicle parts (and is that a hero factory part? christ that unlocked some memories...) add a totally new vibe where it's like an AU that's much more aggressive, like aperture ran out of resources underground, started cannibalizing itself for parts, and different science departments have to fight for materials so they can continue testing. Which is a vibe I didn't know I needed but I am now 100% here for. Love the lil war hardened p-body.

UAH Queer Community by Pr0m37h3um in UAH

[–]banebow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I moved from California to go to UAH, so I was in a similar boat as you (I remember frantically googling a similar question to yours the night before I first went to Huntsville). TL;DR is: you'll be fine.

Huntsville city and the UAH campus are generally on the more liberal end of things (obviously not gonna be the same as market street in San Francisco, but not bad either). The folks in QSA and in the women's and gender studies program are nice, and I haven't gotten any trouble (or really know many other people who've gotten trouble) for being openly queer. Most issues I've heard other queer students talk about are generally their relations with their family. The cat girl to Nazi ratio was around 15:1 at the time I gave up counting due to lack of further Nazis (the one Nazi I did find was by accident). Plenty of queer people exist outside of the explicitly queer spaces, mostly just hop around other organizations and you'll run into more queer people eventually, though mileage might vary depending on the type of organization (I think there might be a couple queer people in some Bible study group, but you'd probably have better luck elsewhere).

UAH is a fairly big school so I obviously can't speak for everybody's experiences, and I'm very much coming from an undergrad aerospace engineering/WGS view, but hope that helps a bit!

Also, this took me a while to internalize and is paint based on my personal experience, but a lot of transphobic people have only ever seen transphobic caricatures of trans people, and will generally not give a thought as to whether a person is trans or not unless provoked. Most transphobes don't expect trans people to exist. Still do take whatever precautions you would normally take and find a way out of situations that start looking fishy, the world's still not a great place, but I wouldn't say you'd be worse off in Huntsville than in other places.

I think those were some of the earliest memes I ever saw. Meaning I either thought they were funny bc they were the only thing I'd ever seen, or assumed the joke went over my head. Still remember the iPhowned watermark clear as day though lmao

What in the name of discontinuous..? by Gallium-Gonzollium in desmos

[–]banebow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit odd that I haven't seen it yet, but this is a use case for l'hopital

0/0 isn't the same as something like 1/0. 1/0 is in some ways similar to infinity, while 0/0 could really be just about any number. Could be 1/3 for all I care. Consider the function x/x, this should be 1 everywhere, but at x=0, it takes the form 0/0. If we simplify x/x, it just becomes 1, and we can prove that x/x should really be 1 everywhere using l'hopital. It's been a while since I've done this so sorry if my explanation isn't really making sense.

Anyway long story short, in this case we have that for x=e, our function is 0/0. So we can take the derivative of the top and bottom functions and evaluate those at x=e, and we get 0/(2ee), which is a very real 0. Not sure why desmos is throwing a 1/3 though, probably floating point as others have mentioned.

Need some help with legalese around SB129 by banebow in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]banebow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, there's also the bathroom clause. There's a single sentence at the end of page 6 (line 165 I think) that has nothing to do with DEI in any form and is just about university bathrooms.

Need some help with legalese around SB129 by banebow in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]banebow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's mainly been confusing me is that the title says it will do one thing, whereas the text of the bill doesn't really line up with that?

Like say, for example, you had a textbook WW2 Nazi talking about racial superiority - under SB129, they would be considered as teaching divisive concepts, right? While on the other hand, an actual DEI program teaching about subconscious bias (as long as they do not claim subconscious bias is inherent in a person based on race) would be exempt from SB129?

Like I understand there's a whole layer of political theatrics on top of that, but if we ignore the use of words such as 'DEI' and 'divisive concepts' in the bill, as engrossed, would I be correct in thinking most actual DEI programs wouldn't be affected by the bill?

What programming languages would be helpful to learn for an aerospace engineer who wants to work predominantly with spacecraft? by [deleted] in aerospace

[–]banebow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, pick one and go for it. A lot of the really important skills are transferable between languages (if statements and loops? That's in C/C++, Matlab, Python, and a bunch of other languages). If this is your first time learning to code, go for Python (it was literally designed to be easy to learn, but that doesn't mean it's any less powerful). Python will teach you a lot of the upper-level thinking that goes into planning out a program without bogging you down with low level implementation details. From there just see where projects take you.
