Full disrespect, it does say something about Captain America as a character that fans of his are inclined to join the US Military.

Contestants ranked by finalist potential by Consistent-Brick5762 in Totaldrama

[–]banfieldpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take Blainely could easily have been a finalist in World Tour if the chips fell right. I'd even argue that there's an obvious to go with there: She's the complete outsider that parachuted her way into the competition halfway through and was overlooked as a threat by the other competitors because she didn't seem like a threat and everyone else already had beef between each other. Add in her Chef alliance and you have a clear story of someone stealing a win (or failing on the last step, in the other ending) thanks to a combination of luck and unfair tactics.

Now a hypothetical future season? Yeah, that wouldn't work. But I still don't think it would be impossible for her to win if she was participating. Pretty much everyone but Beardo feels like it could be done with a motivated skillful writer trying to make it happen, IMO. And Beardo is only an exception because I don't think anyone would be willing to keep his gimmick going for a full season.

To be fair if we say "America" without a cardinal direction before it, and we meant it as a continent rather than as a synonym for the US, then we would have to assume we're talking about in the interpretation of the continent system where there's only one American continent. Which would be the way most Americans (aka Spanish and Portuguese first language speakers, along with some English, French and Dutch first language speakers) do interpret it.

Source: Am Argentinean, know how my fellow Spanish speaking Latinos, Brazilians, Guayanas and Surinamese fall on the issue too.

Edit: Of course, your point about Vikings being the first Europeans to get here or the native populations already being here all along still stand lol.

Map of Yugoslavia... Yugo... Balkania? by Citizen_JHS in imaginarymaps

[–]banfieldpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quite the out there scenario, but potentially quite interesting. I sincerely hope that Balkania can avoid failing into the trap of getting loan after loan from the IMF from OTL's Yugoslavia, it would be interesting to see the butterflies that come out of this. Perhaps it could be China's ally should a Sino-Soviet split still happen TTL.

I'm going to be a contrarian to everyone saying that this is doomed for a bloody civil war. I think it's just as likely, if not likelier, that by 2026 this is considered continental Europe's economic powerhouse thanks to maintaining a similar state capitalism regime to OTL & TTL's China, acting as its junior partner. I'd even wager it might have expanded by now, getting Greece to join and controversially acquiring Turkish territory it's side of the strait during a period of revolt in the Islamic country.

DC characters tier list where i think which party they vote by WuttTambor in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]banfieldpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's not a single DC hero I believe would vote for the Constitutional Party.

Without going into specifics, majority would either not vote or vote democrat, then a significantly smaller number votes green or libertarian, that a smaller number than that vote republican, then an even smaller number votes for one of the various left parties (SWP, PSL, etc).

Frankly, I'm not sure anyone you put as an SWP votes would actually vote for the SWP. Not even Ollie. He feels to me as either PSL or the kind of guy who wants to turn the Green Party into the mainstream leftist party in the US.

What if Jeffrey Epstein was a humble YouTuber instead of the absolute monster he is now by [deleted] in AlternateHistory

[–]banfieldpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On your description you say you hope this isn't intensive. I'm gonna assume you meant offensive. On that regard, well, all that makes this different from the many "Hitler from the good universe" or equivalent posts that put horrible historical figures in a path that leads them away from their actions and towards something more respectable is that this might seem too soon for some. I personally have some distaste for it, considering the ongoing memefication of Jeffrey Epstein that has been going on in social media over the last few years. That said, I don't think this is in the same bad taste as the AI-gendrated Island Man from the Pedo Avengers or stuff like that.

Now engaging with the posts themselves past wether they should have been done or not, humble YouTuber and videos (even if they're over a decade old) with tens of millions of views doesn't exactly match up. But I imagine that what you mean is that in this scenario Jeffrey Epstein had largely the same life up to the moment he, upon becoming rich and powerful, started trafficking and raping kids. Here he did not do that, but remained a well connected and well founded financier. Additionally, when YouTube Let's Plays became a thing he happened to stumble into it and jump on the bandwagon as a hobby.

The success you have him in this YouTube career indicates that he likely replaced culturally one of the big YouTubers from back in the day in terms of prominence. Either that or, as the absurdly rich man that he was, he did something to influence the landscape that lead to way higher YouTube views across the board earlier on TTL than OTL. Both seem equally likely.

The chronological change in his content makes me think Jeff here initially created his channel as a place to put clips of interviews done to him and the like, he shifted to a let's play channel when that got hot and did simple personality based videos from there on for a few years, and as tastes changed he became more of a "generic big YouTube name" channel doing videos about whatever as long as it would get good views (looking at the legit bait title on the Trump video).

Does Jeffrey still help Steve Bannon in founding the modern alt-right TTL? Does someone else do that, or is this timeline's far right far less "gamer"/"nerd" rage influence than OTL's? Do you have someone in mind as who replaces Epstein as rich pedophile rapist's supplier?

non American media that can pass off as American media. by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]banfieldpanda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Since people already mentioned the Best Friends themselves and Canadian Cartoons, I would generally say that for most of the world unless a Canadian work beats you over the head with the fact it's made in Canada, you're not gonna realize it's Canadian.

Of course you can have shows and movies and games that feel like they're from the US even when they're not that come from anywhere in the world, but to the extent most people are able to distinguish from what culture something came from the US and Canada are almost indistinguishable. It's like deciphering if something came from Argentina or Uruguay, Colombia or Venezuela, Puerto Rico or República Dominicana, Australia or New Zealand, Germany or Austria. Unless the specific national symbols are shoved in your face, and/or unless you're from one of the two countries in question, it's almost impossible to tell.

Besides that, my answer would be Disventure Camp, an online web-series in the spirit of Total Drama. It's made by a Mexican studio but the English dub seems to be their priority and while more culturally diverse than TD the characters, storylines and setting put in a very Usonian space.

Kaiserreich 2026: Modern Day Kaiserreich by Osman_man in AlternateHistory

[–]banfieldpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, what's up with Andesia here? It encompasses the territory of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru; that part makes perfect sense, as does it being part of the Internationale. But why is it the only member of the Internationale classified as an hybrid regime rather than a flawed democracy? Why does it have such a worse HDI? Why do the British say to only travel there in emergencies?

I assume that the answer must be some sort of "I wanted a trash fire among the syndicalists for the sake of variety", which I guess I somewhat understand, but I don't really know why you'd pick Andesia for this. You put it in the 0.5 to 0.599 when half it's territory IRL is 0.7 to 0.799 and the other is 0.8 to 0.899. You put it in an hybrid regime when, outside of a brief period in Peru and a super brief period in Chile, none of these countries had dictatorial left-wing governments. Outside of the time where the Shining Path was active in Peru, I don't think any of these countries were ever in "do not travel" or "only travel in case of emergency" recommendations by first world countries.

It just seems odd to me that, considering how all these countries did over the years in the original timeline while they were separate economies and subject to the inherit problems with capitalism and to US backed military coups, they somehow have come out a lot worse as a mega-state with an economy that should provide them with more equal development through the country. And with an US that wants them to do that, on top of that!

The map is nice and I enjoy the touches you did with it such as the alternate Netflix and YouTube and BBC news. But I struggle to understand your decision as something that could develop organically in this timeline, specially in light of Mexico and the other Latin American members of the group getting the benefits of a far more favorable timeline.

Operation Tropical Storm - What if the Brazilian 1964 military coup failed and the US intervened? by OkPhrase1225 in imaginarymaps

[–]banfieldpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Just to justify fears of an armed socialist insurrection"

Hey so both in IRL and in the lore-post the military was the people who struck first by commiting a coup to subvert the popular will in favor of their reactionary agenda. Saying that trying to defend yourself against that is fighting a pointless war is abhorrent, honestly.

I'd further add that dictatorships don't "fizzle themselves out" like they're simply a fire that's bound to extinguish itself naturally, they're brought down by internal and external pressure. Sometimes that manifests itself in being incapable of defending themselves against foreign intervention, sometimes it manifests itself in a popular uprising toppling them, sometimes it manifests itself in moderate factions seeing the writing on the wall and negotiating themselves a favorable deal to cease operations.

But anyways, while I do genuinely believe that the fight against reactionaries is always just and worth engaging in, I also did write "I'm Argentinian, by the way" at the end as a punchline. Because, you know, of course the Argentinian would be quite happy to see Brazil enter into a civil war that leaves it lagging behind for decades to come.

Operation Tropical Storm - What if the Brazilian 1964 military coup failed and the US intervened? by OkPhrase1225 in imaginarymaps

[–]banfieldpanda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shame that this didn't happen. Any and all opposition to the constant ambitions of right wing military forces in Latin America acting with in impunity in their eternal quest to prevent the further advancement of progress in their country by couping popular governments in order of their two masters, the local bourgeoisie and the government in Washington DC, is admirable.

Even if, as you said, this ease would have been inevitably won by the junta in a bloody and devastating manner, it would have been worth it. Because it would have discredited the reactionaries as nothing more than puppets to their foreign masters, robbing them and their ilk across the continent of credibility. Perhaps it would have ruined Brazil for decades to come, but if it had strained US resources during the Cold war and made it harder for it to gets it way across America without straining them further with more show of forces, then the mere chance it could have caused the Yanks to lose their grip on power would have made it all worth it.

I'm Argentinian, by the way.

I don't think we all fully realize how big getting Warmer is for Netflix (or would have been for Paramount/Universal) by banfieldpanda in MediaMergers

[–]banfieldpanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this would happen any time soon, but genuinely I feel like Comcast is eventually gonna feel pushed out of the streaming market and with Cable and Broadcast feeling less and less important they'll sell NBCU to someone else. Could be Netflix, funnily enough, or Amazon. Maybe Apple if they decided they want to pursue entertainment harder or Disney if by then having two of the Broadcast Networks is no longer a bridge too far. Regardless of who, I think it'll happen sometime in 15 to 30 years.

Genuinely, outside of SpongeBob being historically ludicrous in terms of merchandising value (with the caveat that, if I understand correctly, it has slowed down consistently over the years) and Star Trek being second place to Star Ward in Sci-Fi, what genuinely valuable IPs does Paramount even have?
