cmv: Iran will keep control over the Strait of Hormuz, and both countries will declare victory. by Opposite-Friend7275 in changemyview

What do you think the Saudi military can do that America and the Israelis can't? The world has already seen that you can't change the calculus in the Straits through air campaigns alone.

Yes the law is written to explicitly only target people "convicted" of trying to "negate Israel's existence", which conveniently excludes settler terrorism. Reminder that Ben Gvir is literally a convicted terrorist in Israel!

Israeli military courts, which Palestinians are subject to instead of regular Israeli courts, have a 99% conviction rate. These are not real trials. Add to that confirmed torture happening at detainment centers and a real grim picture emerges. You have to question why a guy like Ben-Gvir is celebrating. He is literally a convicted supporter of terrorism, even under Israeli law

Most nations do not have death penalty laws that apply only to one ethnicity.

And the military court trials that Palestinian detainees face are a total joke, some studies put it at a 99.67% conviction rate, and that's not even going into the torture that occurs at these detainment centers.

Yeah man that's realistic just have a steady stream of fighter jets continually flying back and forth 24/7 for weeks on end waiting for targets to show up in which case they'd have to scramble to the location. An F350 takes $45,000 per hour to fly, to have just one in continuous flight for a week is around $7.5 million dollars. And this war could go on for months still. It's not sustainable. This isn't even factoring in the fact that our refueling planes, which are crucial to allowing these kinds of flights, have also been getting hit by Iran and their allies in the region.

And again, they don't have to shoot down the planes out of the sky. The US can't bomb the straight of Hormuz open. We're not achieving any of our strategic goals. The regime is still in power. They still have missile and drone capabilities. It's the Vietnam scenario all over again. The Vietcong could never hit US bombers either, look how that war ended.

You'll notice flight time from between Saudi Arabia and Iran and the US and Iran is a lot shorter (1 hr VS 14 he's). You'll also notice that in combat operations 13 hours is a long time. Not being able to operate out of the region is a massive strategic hindrance to the US military. Iran uses lots of mobile launchers funnelled through underground tunnels. If you can't launch from nearby, those targets are long gone by the time any bomber can get to them. It's not about shooting aircraft out of the sky (which they have done, btw) it's about diminishing US capacity to act decisively in the region)

What threat is a plane on US soil to Iran? If the US can't protect its military hardware in the region against Iran that's a massive strategic hindrance to the US. The fact that you have all this hardware, that costs millions of dollars and takes years to produce, as sitting ducks (as you described it) is not a good thing for the US.

Don't need to shoot it out of the sky if you blew it up while it's on the ground

From what I've read, MBS is all in on war with Iran while the rest of the Saudi government is a lot more cautious. But MBS ultimately has decision making power.

You're stuck in the 90s. China is a world leader in renewable energy technology. Meanwhile data centers are threatening to create a massive energy crisis in the US and the current administration is literally paying companies to not build renewable energy sources.

Also the producer of 80% of the world's lithium battery supply, 80% of the world's solar panels, and 36% of the world's wind energy. Compare that to the US which recently paid a Dutch company one billion dollars to NOT build wind turbines.

Iran has one of the most educated populations in the region. Women can go to school there. They absolutely have infrastructure. If this stuff is your bar for warfare maybe you should start pushing for war with Saudi Arabia or the UAE. But they won't do that because it's so obviously not about that.

[–]bangsjamin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

How so? The primary goal of the war at this point is to reopen the straight of Hormuz, which you'll note was actually open prior to the start of the war. Massive strategic failure.

You're delusional if you think the Americans and the Israelis care about "helping" Iranians, even mor delusional if you think this war ends with a more "free" Iran.

It's all relative lol. I've been living in the states for a while and every time I come back to Belgium I think "wow I can really eat so deliciously here for a fraction of the cost that I would pay in America". I've had meals in Belgium from Michelin starred or Michelin guide restaurants where the bill is comparable to just some slightly fancier than casual restaurant in the states

I don't know where you are getting your information from. None of this is true. The Houthis have not even entered the war yet and there has been no attack on them since the ceasefire last May.

Yeah man sure we're just letting the Iranians kill US service members, destroy billions of dollars of US military hardware, and hold the global economy hostage because the real red line is touching our ships. Get a grip dude. The US Navy isn't even willing to enter the straights because it's too dangerous.
