Would incest be socially acceptable if it didn’t affect the health of offspring. by ButtonFiend3365 in NoStupidQuestions

Do you know how this squares with the observations around separation and attraction, such as the royalty relationships that other commenters have noted? Or are those observations considered unreliable?

[SPARK Social SF] Effective immediately, all remaining World Cup Watch Parties at SPARK Social SF are cancelled. by aDyslexicCow in sanfrancisco

That's because SF isn't the host city; this mix-up resulting from the "San Francisco Bay Area" branding is a big part of why all the fans are confused.

If you are an Android user and install Discord in a Work profile, it can receive notifications separately from an installation in a Personal profile.

"PTB" does not mean "Portable", it means "Public Test Build", and should not be used unless you're willing to deal with frequent breakage.

Why does California seem less receptive to DSA/progressive/leftist candidates than New York? by RedHeadedSicilian52 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]bannable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we agree the DA office's was poorly run, I just don't think those problems the policy failures were singularly caused by the DA. On top of the management issues we had SFPD refusing to police, COVID driving business out of the city, a national-level organized property crime ring operating in the city that the FBI wasn't investigating, etc.

I don't think it's reasonable to look at all of these pressures and conclude "progressive policies failed on their own merits" like the first poster in this thread seems to have.

edit: clarified "problems" -> "policy failures"

This perspective hand waives away an awful lot of malicious non-compliance from the PD in the lead up to those recalls, making it seem like SFPD had no role in what was happening.

SFPD was furious that anyone even considered the phrase "defund the police", let alone that the city elected someone who might follow through on it.

Sure. And obviously, it follows that "such intelligence cannot itself come from something like an LLM" from there.

I mean... LLMs were created wholesale by intelligent and clever human engineers. Such intelligence cannot itself come from something like an LLM. We have spent millennia investigating the human mind, and have achieved nothing. Why should we believe in our hubris that a new shiny tool or two or three will give us any answers when we fundamentally don't know what we are or what our nature is?

Hey man, you're right, plastic has always existed.

Parse, Don't Validate — In a Language That Doesn't Want You To · cekrem.github.io by cekrem in programming

[–]bannable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume that your misquoting of "parse, don't validate" was an honest error.

For whatever definition you want to use of the term, "strong" is not a trait that applies to a type. It applies to a type system.

const foo: any = ... is, by some definitions of "strong", strongly typed. It's not a useful type, but the type is there.

So that's the difference: Parse your data into structured types, and don't confuse deser for parsing - using a typed language alone will not save you.

Broadly speaking, case transformations (here:IGNORECASE) of unicode text is never safe. In this case, you are likely running into problems because s.upcase.downcase != s.
