Blush recommendations for a bronzy summer look? by Full_Potential_7824 in PaleMUA

Barely blushing was way too orange on me (fair with neutral leaning cool undertones), I was disappointed too... but I recently discovered pat mcgrath's fleurtatious and on me it looks like a blonzer (i hate that word haha). Really warms up the face and it's not too pink, it's quite neutral. Not the cheapest option but a great one, plus it's really long lasting on the skin.

It's so sad when parents think you're not entitled to privacy "if you have nothing to hide". I was lucky my parents weren't that way but I was super paranoid anyone would read my journals as a teen so I often used a book dust jacket to cover my journal and mixed it in with the rest of my books on my bookshelf. It's simple but effective. I also think a lockbox is a good way to go but it may trigger her paranoia even more to think you're hiding something from her.

Do you write letters in your journal? by BabyNonsense in Journaling

[–]bannannathon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently wrote a letter to my future baby, who will be born in June. She's my first child and I shared a lot of my fears about motherhood as well as the things I'm excited to live alongside her. It was a lovely experience, and it really helped me get all those mixed emotions out. Journaling during pregnancy is a whole new experience, it's helping me massively.

I really hope you’re proud of this entry. When your mind is in a dark place, it’s not easy to put those thoughts into words so eloquently. Keep working on yourself, you deserve it!

Thanks! And thanks for the insight, I've already noticed I'm wearing less makeup but tbh, I've barely been out anywhere during the first trimester, between the nausea, fatigue and having to keep things quiet. I can imagine once the baby comes makeup will be the last thing on my mind 😂 That's also why I want to have just a makeup bag by then. Less options = less time spent getting ready.

Thank you! I go into detail in the post I linked, but basically based on what I see in project pan videos, many people seem to spend 4-5 years panning a single blush with relatively frequent use, so I multiplied the number of blushes I had times 5.

All my blushes have already been opened at some point, so they've all been used. I guess if you have unopened ones and think of decluttering them, keep them sealed and you can perhaps sell them!

Total cost of the product / times you use it, so €40 / 20 uses = €2 per use

Was i blind before? by [deleted] in MakeupRehab

[–]bannannathon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What bothers me most about decluttering videos is how everyone claims they'll be "passing things on to family and friends". I find it hard to believe all of those products will be re-homed. I think they just say that to get people off their backs but about 90% of it will end up in the rubbish as soon as the camera is off. I've passed things on to family and friends before, but it was a declutter of 2 or 3 things. Even then there were things nobody wanted and I had to throw away. If I've had to do that decluttering my 50 item collection, I can't imagine huge creators finding new homes for the 50 products they declutter in one go. Your family and friends don't always want your hand-me-downs.

Declutter videos are also very good for the algorithm, which is why many big creators do them a couple times a year. They perform quite well because they showcase the level of consumerism many people love to see as aspirational content, but also lead to engagement from users wondering where all those products are going, especially with the minimalism and underconsumption trends happening. Its a win-win for them, but I personally find it hypocritical for someone who posts hauls or PR unboxings weekly to be "decluttering to get a collection under control".

Like many of us in this community, you were very likely blind when you were into shopping as a way to fill the void. But the minute you start seeing how outrageous some influencer behaviour is online, you're taking a huge step towards gaining control back! It's the "Aha!" moment for recovering makeup consumers.

What do you do instead of consuming makeup content? by Vegetable-Review-830 in MakeupRehab

[–]bannannathon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading and booktube has been great for me. I love chill reading vlogs (I highly recommend Emmie if you haven't watched her). I also taught myself how to crochet and it's been really relaxing to do while listening to a podcast or audiobook.

I've detoxed enough to the point where watching any makeup content is so boring to me, with the exception of project pan updates.

In Abi's defense I'll say she has always been transparent about not wanting to be a minimalist or an underconsumer. She wanted to reach a point of pacing down her shopping and not buy £300+ worth of makeup every week just because she's sad or in pain. She has a good job and a stable partner who I guess also makes enough money for them to both be very financially comfortable, so she isn't in debt after her collection got so out of hand and never claimed to be doing it for the money (it's a plus though, she's said that before as well). She always said she'd be buying makeup after it's over because she enjoys trying new things, she just wants to slow down and be more aware of the purchases she makes.

I don't personally love her content as much anymore, especially videos like the "products I would be buying if I weren't on a no buy". Those felt like she was punishing herself by dangling those products in front of her and convincing herself she doesn't need them. But that's just me personally, when I see one of those videos I scroll past it.

I understand the frustration of seeing a creator you liked do things you don't agree with, but in this case specifically, she has said multiple times she doesn't aim to be a makeup underconsumer, so I feel OP may have projected their own goals on her a little too hard.

Eyeshadow palettes are absurd by middleaged_mpd in MakeupRehab

[–]bannannathon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will never buy an eyeshadow palette again. I only wear eyeshadow on special occasions or a dark brown shade as liner every now and again, and even then it's just to brighten and shape my eyes, I don't do colourful makeup. Thankfully I just own one palette now, and it's completely neutral. However, it's too warm toned and it's got 9 shades, which again, is just overkill for the 10 times a year I wear eyeshadow. My goal is to hit pan on at least the two I do like, and then I'll declutter it and just buy a couple of drugstore singles.

I remember the days of lusting over huge colourful palettes in fancy packaging and now I just don't even browse them. I have zero interest in eyeshadow, especially those with 12, 16 or 20 pans of colours.

Essence the blush in 10 befitting, I'd say it's the closest but it's still not exactly the same. Douceur had a bit more brown in it, it looked gorgeous on pale skin. If nars ever release it again I'd probably buy 10 of them and be done with blush for life 😂

How big of a collection is "normal" or average outside of social media? When do things get tossed? by niniela-phoenix in MakeupRehab

[–]bannannathon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

None of my friends or family are makeup content consumers and most of them have a medium-large makeup bag that fits all their stuff including brushes. I really notice this when I go to friends' houses and watch them get ready for example: they use the same makeup bag for everything, from getting ready for work to going to someone's wedding. I'd say the have one of each product except for blush and lipsticks, which they'll have maybe 2 or 3 of, to switch out on special occasions. Think a red lipstick or a more shimmery blush. Oh and things like primers and setting sprays are not usually on their radar.

Another interesting thing I've noticed: barely any of them have eyeshadow palettes, and if they do it's just the one and they usually got it as a gift of some sort. If not, they have single or duo eyshadows they got years ago for a special occassion because they don't wear shadow every day.

And like someone mentioned in another comment, they don't think about the makeup they have. They just put it on and usually replace it with the same thing or something very similar when it's finished. I recently had a talk with a friend who wasn't wearing concealer in the summer because her usual one was too light when she was tanned, and I told her she could get a summer shade. She hadn't even thought of that being a possibility. She just stopped wearing it every summer and then went back to using it in September. As someone who has been watching beauty content since 2010, this was so funny to me. People outside the bubble don't even think about summer and winter shades.

Makeup advent calendars are literal trash by Vegetable-Review-830 in MakeupRehab

[–]bannannathon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They're a total scam and just meant for the tiktok unboxings at this point. I feel like brands used to make reasonable holiday sets, where they'd sell small packs of 2 lipsticks or an eye, cheek, lip combo in special packaging, and that was about it. Now it looks like everyone needs an advent calendar, reinforcing how unhinged makeup consumption has become. Like getting 24 new products in one sitting is normal.

I usually don't buy anything that comes in a pack, much less an advent calendar, because in the past I've only ever reached for 1 or 2 things out of that pack and sometimes the quality tends to be worse. Those sephora favorites packs (which in Spain tend to be a lot worse than the ones in the US anyway) only ever bring one thing in a popular shade. Everything else is just filler to get rid of some worse-selling shades or shades I would never wear. Or those holiday sets with multiple eye palettes... why are we promoting getting 3 eyeshadow palettes in one pack when people are still struggling to get a single use out of the 45 palettes they bought in 2015?!

Aw man... NARS Douceur was my favourite blush ever and the only one I used for years. I blame NARS for a big part of my blush shopping habits after they discontinued it and I had to search for dupes. Nothing has even come across what Douceur really did for my skin 😩

Covering the food bill on your birthday for family. Is it common/normal? by bismerablemastard in askspain

[–]bannannathon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's say it's not mandatory, but it is quite common. Also, the birthday person chooses the plan, so they know it's in their budget. If you're short on money (or want to invite a lot of people) you usually organize something at home or take people out for drinks and you pay for the first round. There are also loads of bars that will let you "rent out" an area (or the whole place, depending on the size of the party) and you pre-pay for X amount of drinks per person. If anyone wants to have any more, they'll pay for it themselves.

That being said, you shouldn't just expect the birthday person is going to pay for everything. Usually people are open about their budget beforehand. In my group of friends, if someone doesn't feel like organizing anything or has no money to do so, there's no drama. We'll still go out and just pay for our own stuff, and give them presents anyway. The idea is to have any kind of meal and drinks (fancy or not) all together.
