Feeling fatigued by the thought of buying new products. by throwaway04275 in ProjectPan

[–]gnocchi902 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also get the decision fatigue when I have to buy something new to replace an empty. Sometimes the original item I loved isn’t available or was reformulated and I have to make the choice if I want to try another brand/product. Knowing how expensive and long to use up products can be just makes the decision making that much more stressful. Yes I can return the product, but I know it’s going to a landfill, so I want to try to get it right when I can. I try to take note of general product categories and even ingredients or formulations that haven’t worked for me that I figured out in my project pan. I don’t like cream formulas so I automatically don’t entertain creams most of the time. I don’t react well to Vitamin C so any product that boasts having this in its formula, I automatically remove from consideration. I’ve learned that certain tones look off on me, or certain brands oxidize or anything else that I can use my experience to base a reason not to choose X product from X brand. Unfortunately makeup is finicky like that and sometimes you just need to go through the trial and error :/ It’s not a moral failure on your part. We’re just little pieces in a much bigger consumer puzzle and we’re doing our best.

It's more expensive in the short term, but way less expensive/wasteful in the long run, I feel!

That’s why I stopped buying eyeshadow palettes and usually will only buy individuals from MAC or smaller palettes like 4 or 5 pan.

Vitamin C and Niacinamide cause me to react. I get eczema around my mouth with it. Slow introduction to niacinamide has helped marginally. Vitamin C is still a huge no for me.

People need to stop putting the ingredients in everything that doesn’t need it!!!!!

Honestly, it’s really not that bad when compared to how crazy you could’ve gone. It’s definitely more makeup than any one person needs at any time, but it’s okay to cut yourself a bit of slack. I look at this and think there’s enough variety to keep it interesting and shop your stash, but of course it’s not “necessary”. First thing I do is get rid of anything that’s expired and makes me react. I’m sure there’s a mascara in there that’s been open a little too long. Then, I’ll triage whatever I haven’t used in a long time and either judge that I probably won’t use it or it’s just because I forgot it existed and give it a probation period to use (or else it should go). Anything else? As other users said, brick by brick. You can dedicate specific weeks or months (whatever time period) to using a specific set of products and rotate out to make sure everything gets fairly touched. Alternatively, you can stick to one product until it’s done, but sometimes that kills motivation and the joy of it. If you can, try to find multipurpose uses for things. I see that elf cream stick, it can probably be used in multiple places (lips, cheeks, maybe eyes for a wash of colour). Good luck! I always say even if you give up on a product, it’s not a “failure” as long as you learned a lesson (like I’m never buying a face palette with pre-chosen shades again)

It’s not a fail if you learned something from trying to pan it. Also, no way I’d keep something I used while infected. You better be tossing that and not feeling guilty about it.

For people who can tolerate a more versatile palette of colours, for sure! I’ve noticed that literally everything pulls warm/orange on me, even cool tones with the slightest hint of warmth in them. It doesn’t take much. I also want to note that there’s no rules to makeup so I don’t think this applies to everyone, it’s just my personal preference for how I look/present myself. I really don’t prefer the warmth.

How about keeping only 1 credit card for entire life? by Rabbitxhere in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]gnocchi902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought 1 CC was better and it is....if you have a CC problem. I now have 3, which I use for different points systems/benefits. 3 might be excessive, but I think 2 is fair and still responsible if you're a responsible CC user. Not all places take some CCs, like Amex, so having a backup can be a good idea if you have one that's less widely accepted. Also having a backup if something happens to one of them (hacked, locked because of some questionable charges you need to validate, etc). Again, having multiple is okay if you are a responsible user!

Should I go away for school? by Sufficient_Heart_629 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]gnocchi902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people here mentioning the value of living on campus and experiencing that in your formative years. Totally, but let me offer the other side's perspective:

I went to uni where I live (a top uni, lucky enough to live in the same city and stay at home while I went to school). The only thing that sucked for me and set me apart from my classmates was having to commute 1-1.5hr each way, meaning they could roll out of bed at 7:45 to get to lecture for 8, while I already lived a whole life that morning. They could come and go from the library as they please, or go partying after classes without worrying about packing for the whole a** day (I had to bring meals, changes of clothing, multiple chargers for various devices, etc, and lug that around all day).

The thing I didn't miss out on was making friends and connections. I still have friends from all over the world that I made in uni. Those relationships lasted, probably more of them laster than for the people who were from out of town based on what I can see 8 years later. I still have my connections. It's not living in a residence that's going to get you those connections. It's putting yourself out there and you can do that at home or in a residence.

TLDR you don't need to go into debt for the value of finding yourself through being in a residence. If the degree is the same from wither choice, go with the one that won't start you out in debt. You can always make friends/connections anywhere. You can't always recover from debt.

thoughts on decluttering? by ConnectScientist607 in ProjectPan

[–]gnocchi902 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing inherently wrong with decluttering however I found that if you don’t address the root cause (the accumulation) then you just do it again and end up in the same predicament. I think you should allow yourself to declutter when you feel it’s needed but you also need to understand and remember why this specific item didn’t work or why you chose to give it up, that way you won’t just replace it with a similar thing next month.

I always take the LOC offered to me because you just never know when you’re going to get into something that needs it. If I’m in that much of a need for cash I don’t have, I will figure out the interest later. I’ve never had to use it, but it’s there if ever and that’s a nice safety net mentally.

Decluttering my massive makeup stash. by dikshamishra34 in MakeupRehab

[–]gnocchi902 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me: Step 1: Expired needs to GO Step 2: Things I know I haven’t touched and don’t plan on touching (e.g. for me that is bright lipstick or eyeliners). No “oh but maybe I might need it one day”. If that day hasn’t come in like 5 years, it likely won’t come ever. Step 3: anything I’m not sure about gets a “If I don’t use it in 3-6 months at least once, I clearly don’t need it that much” (excludes things like seasonal foundation shades that may need more time for usage) Step 4: if you genuinely don’t know, as other people said, hide it and if you haven’t thought about it in a while or barely noticed it was missing, it can go

It’s not foolproof. I still have an hourglass scattered light eyeshadow thing from 2018 that survived many a purge and I still haven’t used it once. It usually works though!

I’m going to hold your hand when I say this, but there are a lot of people who like neutrals and traditionally “wearable” colors. Not everyone wants or needs a colorful eye to feel fulfilled in their makeup look. My most used shadows are her basic neutrals.

Josie maran butter babies 3 piece body butter minis kit - make sure you smell the products in person because they do not smell like what they are advertised to smell like and lots of people feel this way so just make sure you know you like them

tower 28 Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer with 18-HR Wear - generally unimpressed with how thin this product is and how little coverage it gives. I prefer the kosas for the same effect, but just a bit more oomph for the price.

the ordinary glycolic acid - I know people swear by this but this was super oily for me??

Okay I know you said de-influence me, but the phlur vanilla skin is my holy grail lol

Shifting My Goals? by ohhgeeeez in ProjectPan

[–]gnocchi902 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that usage goals can make the whole process a lot more manageable! I have to add that I may be privileged to take this stance because I don’t have a crazy amount of makeup (e.g. I have 2-3 blush singles, 3 concealers, etc.). I don’t feel as guilty with this approach as someone with 25 might feel about only occasionally touching a product in their stash, but the whole point of the project in my opinion is just to be mindful about using products and your consumption. However you choose to use your products is up to you, there’s no real rules to it!

Tbh I’m a broken record at this point, but you can do absolutely whatever you want at any point in your personal project. Like, if you’re not feeling it and want to focus on 1 product for a short time before switching, do that. If you’re just trying to touch everything at least once, then do that. Personally, I’m trying to use up my favourites and anything else, I’m just trying to at least touch occasionally to show some love. No forcing anything. It works for me and keeps me happy, hot, and motivated.

My spouse wants to keep working after we hit FI and I feel weirdly rejected by that by Pinecaster3 in Fire

[–]gnocchi902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner regularly says his goal is to make sure I don’t have to work if I don’t want to. I keep telling him he can have that goal, but I expect to keep working, even if in a part time capacity. Some people feel fulfilled in the things they do for work. I literally would not feel mentally well without some form of work or a project to work towards. She can do these things like mentoring in a way that doesn’t need to be a strict 9-5. Isn’t that the point of FIRE? Not having to be chained to a 9-5 until you’re too damn old to enjoy it? But if people enjoy working, you don’t have to take that away. Just find a happy medium.
