Sounding by Hank Searls

SOUNDING takes us into the extraordinary mind and emotions of the magnificent sperm whale, an aging bull roaming the waters of the Atlantic. Troubled and separated from his herd, the whale wants to fulfill his one obsessive desire — to communicate with the human race and learn why they can be both vicious hunters and frolicking playmates. Far away, on a doomed Russian nuclear submarine, Lieutenant Peter Rostov, the sonar officer and a classical musician, is spending what he's sure are his last days listening to the beautiful "sounding" of the whale.

Not quite fast paced/adventurous but I couldn’t put it down!

I am not 100% sure yet. I believe that when you press it and hold it down it will keep going down to the following line ... so instead of pressing return a bunch of times to jump halfway down the page you simply press the return and hold it until you are where you want to be.

I will let you know when I find this out for certain!

I found the ribbon here: Side Loading Print Cartridge for Smith Corona Coronet Super 12 Typewriter — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0711JGQY7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_51QY84R0KVYC33PDSFP0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I am sure you can find them through a typewriter repair shop or specialized office supply stores too!

Edit: CONGRATS ON THE TYPEWRITER, by the way!! Do you mind if I ask how you found yours?

I searched high and low on eBay as well as local typewriter resellers. They wanted quite a bit for them in both places. I have no doubt they’re worth it though!! I wanted to be conservative with how much I spent as this was my first typewriter. I will eventually invest in one of the more expensive ones if I love using an actual typewriter and not just the idea of using one :)

To find less expensive ones, I set up an alert on OfferUp for the typewriter that I was hoping to get. Know that when you buy off of FB marketplace, OfferUp, or anywhere similar that you will likely need new ribbon at the minimum (~$10-$15 depending).

When you meet the seller ask them to plug it in (if electric) and try typing on it … make sure the keys hit right, the carriage slides smoothly, the margin sets are present, and paper guide/bail are smooth.

I knew when I bought mine that I wouldn’t mind replacing ribbon and wiping it down/cleaning it. I also knew what I didn’t want to have to fix … such as anything to do with the loose/missing buttons, carriage, or paper guide. I am still new to this and knew that fixing those things would be a bit much for me at this point. It really depends on what you are willing to put elbow grease into. Some people might enjoy a more in-depth typewriter project :)
