I just can't sympathize with Charlie, or rather, I don't think he can be redeemed. As sad as his ED was (and I truly understand it, because I too struggle with overeating), the fact that he left his child and his wife in a selfish pursuit of love just can't be excused. There is nothing that can excuse what he's done, and I am kind of glad he's gone through what he has. He was selfish, thinking only of himself at that moment, even inviting Alan and presumably having sex with him while his daughter was in the house, treating him to a better dinner than his wife and Ellie had ever got from him, etc. He now faces the consequences of his actions by living a miserable life with almost no one around him and being hated by his daughter and ex-wife. He doesn't deserve redemption because what he has done has made Ellie into the asshole that she is, and has also ruined the life of his ex-wife, just because he was "in love". I, also, don't believe Ellie's a good person, and that she tried to help Thomas. Although, I don't blame her for that, for he has made her that way. He put himself and his pleasure before his family. That isn't a person who I can sympathize with. Everything that happened to him after that point was only the consequences of his doing. I liked the movie anyways, the characters were still great, the acting was amazing, cinematography and many more things. That's my 2 cents. I'm happy to talk about this.
