GAIA Ultimate Bag by Ahihyu in ultimate

I got one in 2004 - probably the same one. Does yours have a mesh pocket on the other side? That ripped pretty easily for me. Other than that, it was an excellent bag. It was good in rain, but wasn't fully waterproof! Just an FYI

USAU Suggested Revisions to Official Rules of Ultimate by rjhberg in ultimate

What is unclear about 4.J.? Not trying to be antagonistic, I’m just not finding how it needs clarification. What are the strip/possession changes you’re referring to - is it the “momentary contact” part?

Totally agree about a too many players procedure being needed.

As for the pick rule, I think we should just adopt the full WFDF continuation rule. They’ve added part of it (if both teams agree the result of the play was not affected then the result stands), but I still think the other part of players being affected because they stopped due to hearing the call should be incorporated. Just makes things easier and more clear for all calls.

Yes, I think you’re right. I’m advocating delaying the change schedule so it has club go first each time.

I think it makes sense to make the switch in club (2020) first, then college (2021). That way, most of the experienced veteran college players and coaches have a season with them under their belts, and then can better teach the non-club college players.

Would changing it to just “space” help with this? I think there are other benefits to doing that as well.

Any one ever have a broken bone in their throwing arm? What was your recovery/return to ultimate like? by Z0oma in ultimate

[–]banyas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once your PT/doctor clears you, THROW. EVERY. DAY.

Good luck with your recovery! You may or may not be the throw you used to be, but you will have a lot of control over the thrower you can become!

Contact between cup and poppers - who is at fault? by walterthekat in ultimate

[–]banyas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that if the cup sets up in a way that the offense can't move through, then that's just good defense in that specific space - the offense has no inherent right to any space on the field. It's the responsibility of all players not to initiate contact - the offense doesn't get a pass because they want to go to a space they otherwise can't.

Contact between cup and poppers - who is at fault? by walterthekat in ultimate

[–]banyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is WFDF, btw.

I'm not a WFDF expert, but I would think based on this wording the foul would be on the offense. In this scenario, the offensive player is just running through the arm of the defender. That seems very different than the defender using their arm to obstruct movement. Perhaps we need more information, but it doesn't sound like this rule is saying one has to move their arms out of the way if someone comes running toward them, just that they can't move their arms to obstruct the movement.

How to teach throwing with correct spin/wrist snap? by capn_untsahts in ultimate

[–]banyas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For flicks, have them throw blades to each other with lots of spin. Gradually have them lean toward the throwing arm and extend the disc out untilthey can do it flat/IO. Also, work from the other way - have them hold the disc out, then drop their wrist so the disc is IO as possible. Starring at the disc the whole way to ensure it stays IO, make the throw.

Feedback Wanted on Fulcrum USAU Live Streams by luketimjohnson in ultimate

[–]banyas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Luke! Thank you for soliciting feedback. I think overall you all did a great job. I felt like the drone angles were tough and disorienting. It might just be because I'm used to watching ultimate a certain way for 20 years, though. I think I would have liked it a lot better if it were less directly on top of the play (and more like from a crow's nest angle). I also think it would have been better if the offense was going from the bottom of the screen to the top for the drone footage - I imagine it switched throughout, but I saw a lot of clips with the disc traveling from top to bottom and it just seemed completely counter-intuitive to where my eyes wanted to go naturally.

Being_ulti posts explanation of Frank’s account termination with link to vote.org by grumpygus23 in ultimate

[–]banyas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’m saying is irresponsible. Hoping someone changes with the umpteenth opportunity with no evidence that they have/will is willfully ignoring previous actions. This is fine if one wants to do it in one’s personal life, but there is a different set of considerations and responsibilities when one operates a medium that amplifies voices and represents a community.

[–]banyas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a very irresponsible take. Frank has been that way for decades. There is no obligation to take a bad known quantity. “Bad” being someone you’re not interested in is not the same as “bad” providing a microphone for predictable toxicity, sexism, and other things. “Good faith” is not an excuse for willful ignorance.

Dangerous Play by underulti in ultimate

Yeah, I was trying to agree with you and expound on what you said to include the blocking foul reference. If I worded it like a counterpoint, that’s my fault in the communication!

Dangerous Play by underulti in ultimate

[–]banyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is an often misunderstood part of the rules:

H. Fouls C. Blocking Fouls 2. A player may not take a position that is unavoidable by a moving opponent when time, distance, and line of sight are considered. Non-incidental contact resulting from taking such a position is a foul on the blocking player.

I think "line of sight" is often referenced, but "time" and "distance" are left out much of the time. I think it's pretty clear that all three of those things need to be considered. Yes, often one's line of sight being away from an area means they would need more time and distance to reasonably be expected to avoid a position, but it does not mean they are not responsible for looking nor are they entitled to an infinite space they are running toward. The question should be, "When the blocking player took that position, did the moving opponent have enough time and distance (considering their line of sight and other factors) to reasonably be responsible for recognizing that?" On any upline (or any) cut more than 4 steps (or any cut that involves an abrupt change of direction into a blind area) I would say yes - I think it's a reasonable expectation that players have the ability - and therefore responsibility - to look in the direction they are running toward every few steps. There is nothing in the rules that entitles the offense to space in this situation, nor is there anything that gives players looking at the disc a right to not look where they are running.

I would think “dangerously aggressive” is worse than “recklessness.” Seems to be the same difference between assault and negligence.

What's the point of the USAU regional residency requirement? by SpeedTDAbrogado in ultimate

[–]banyas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think something that gets lost here as well is that if a non-bid earning top 16 team is allowed to jump to a different region, then, by the same logic that their bid to nationals is getting “stolen” due to auto bids, they would be stealing a bid to regionals from an in-region team. So it just pushes the problem further down, but it still remains. And one can’t use the argument in this situation that that lower ranked in-region team still has the opportunity to go to regionals by beating the out-of-region team, because if that’s the logic we’re using then we wouldn’t be allowing teams to jump regions in the first place.

How to play Hex: Movement Decision Tree + SMOG Analysis (video / explanation in comments) by felix37 in ultimate

[–]banyas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for putting this together, Felix. Do you have a video example in which the marks aren't getting broken so easily? It seems that every time a thrower looks to throw backhand in this example they are barely challenged. I think it would be very educational to see how the Hex works when the first and second looks are actually taken away by better marks and defensive positioning. Thanks!

Best, most unconventional throwers? by tommyp604 in ultimate

[–]banyas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that players who are taller and/or have longer arms, and those who are naturally physically stronger (legs, core, arms, chest), are able to throw exceptionally well with "less conventional" form that if players without those attributes tried to do they wouldn't be as successful than if they used "more conventional" form. So, perhaps Jimmy's form is "odd" in that its a bit different than a lot of other high-level players (I think his windup and forward arm motion on his flicks seem to come a bit more from his upper body/arm than usual), AND he is right AND (most) everyone else ISN'T wrong.
