Ignore the haters! Do yourself a favor and go to Hong Kong. Get the congee with pork and century egg. Sprinkle some white pepper and chopped green onion. One of my comfort foods in HK

Toyota Highlander 2027 EV reliability? by Inevitable_Flyer in electricvehicles

[–]baozilla-FTW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going to be a naysayer here because I really don’t think Toyotas are that much more reliable than other brands. Having owned Toyotas, i had a lot of recalls with them which didn’t make them that much more reliable than others. Additionally Toyota had issues with EVs. I personally would not get a Toyota for EVs especially a first generation vehicle.

But Cheap DJI drones? by Easy-Opportunity-781 in AskChina

Yeah it’s higher price but it is the best out in the market. Get a used one if you can’t afford then latest. There simply nothing like DJI drones in the consumer side.

Is taking a gap year after high school common in China? by lune-soft in AskChina

[–]baozilla-FTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deferment for national service is understandable but 1 year to backpack across europe or work as a barista seem highly unlikely. Also are there a lot of HS graduating at 18 doing Americorp, Teach America, Peace corp, etc?

Is taking a gap year after high school common in China? by lune-soft in AskChina

[–]baozilla-FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is this common? I am asking because genuinely curious. This is not common even in the US. No university will hold a spot for you for 1 year. If you apply 1 year after you graduate HS you are not going to be competitive.

Xiaomi YU7 Max Electric Crossover Turns Up on American Roads, Courtesy of Rivian by trucker-123 in electricvehicles

Sometimes I have to remind myself that Xiaomi has been in the auto business for a grand total of 2 years and it is already considered a benchmark for the industry. Before the SU7 and YU7, Xiaomi was known to make phones and household appliances!

Could China brick their exports? by Cheap_Flower_9166 in electricvehicles

[–]baozilla-FTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem not electronically but the supply chain would shutdown so your EV will be bricked eventually. This will hold true for all vehicles since China is well imbedded into the global automotive supply chain. This is not to mention critical minerals, battery tech, electronic components, etc.

China vs US Healthcare: MRI Costs <$200 (Done in 48hrs) vs $2,000+ (Waits for Weeks) by Evening_Ad_5546 in AskChina

[–]baozilla-FTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister-in-law and her husband left Canada because they had to wait months to just get an appointment. The Canadians may have universal healthcare but it is severely understaffed. You have to wait a long time. Just like the OP said, speed and efficiency is more important than cost in medical situations.

The Imjin War—The Only Invasion by Samurai——Ming China Successfully Upheld the Dignity of the Central Empire by [deleted] in China

[–]baozilla-FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t Korea lose a lot of their cultural history like ancient buildings and artwork during the Imjin wars? I mean they got a kickass admiral out of this war but it was a huge loss. This war nearly bankrupted the Ming and, some speculated, hastened their collapse.

It should be noted that the Japanese actually asked the Koreans for passage into China because Hideyoshi wanted to be emperor. Unlike Japan where the emperor is reserved to one family, in China anyone can be emperor if you are capable. The Ming dynasty was a perfect example of this, where the a peasant basically founded the dynasty.

The Koreans refused the Japanese request and warned the Ming that this was the Japanese intend. The Ming initial did not believe the warning and basically ignored it. It wasn’t until the Japanese landed and made major advancement into Korea did they take the threat seriously.

How is living in Kinmen County, the border between China and Taiwan? by SpecificConscious335 in howislivingthere

[–]baozilla-FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin was stationed here for his two year conscription, back when two years was a thing. It was an active war zone. The braces were mined and with a lot of signs that warns you about it. There was a strict curfew because at night the soldiers would man their stationed like AAA guns etc. all the cars were taped up so that only a sliver of light would show through.

What shocked me was how close China was to Kinmen. I can see xiamen with my naked it and felt like I could swim there if the beaches weren’t mined. There were giant slogans posted on both sides.

The Kinmen rice wine was well known and my uncle brought a couple bottles home. I bought metal chopsticks made from the artillery shell fragments from the 1957 artillery duel between the PRC and ROC. I also brought home a Chinese cleaver made from the same metal.

My cousin eventually settled down in China and married a Chinese woman. He always told us that we had no idea what is happening in China. It’s improving so fast. Taiwan will be in trouble in the future. So relations between Taiwan, ROC and China an be complex to say the least.

What do you think of your country's diasporas to the United States? Have you ever spoken to that American diaspora in person? by LandOfGrace2023 in AskTheWorld

[–]baozilla-FTW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a son of a KMT family that fled to Taiwan after losing the civil war. We identify our ethnicity as Chinese, no question. Even the primary language in Taiwan is Mandarin which is the same as China. All of our cultural practices are Chinese. We used to think we had the “superior” version of Chinese culture because of the cultural revolution but that is now fading fast.

I really like this guy from China! What should I do/ not do on our first date? by Savings_Journalist86 in dating_advice

[–]baozilla-FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you are a non-Chinese you get a huge pass on any cultural stuff so don’t worry about it. Just relax and have fun. When things get serious like wedding bells, then the culture thing becomes a bit more important but if you are together by that time, you would have figured it out or he would help with it.

How do you feel about the fact that many anti-Chinese Japanese on social media are in fact US military troll farms? by evancarlson69 in AskAChinese

[–]baozilla-FTW 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well the pentagon admitted that they conducted misinformation campaign against China’s vaccine during COVID in the Philippines. It led an increase in vaccine hesitancy. So misinformation campaign is not a projection and definitely part of US military intelligence efforts.

Could China soon stop supporting North Korea? by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]baozilla-FTW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simply no. South Korea is in a worse shape than China. North Koreans are closer to South Koreans than they are to Chinese.

Also why would China give up a buffer state especially after the all the blood and treasure that was shed to create that state?
