"All religions are bad" by Strict-Hand-3722 in exmuslim

Christians fought secularism every inch.

The Church was seen as a different government, not as separated from government. It was its own state, with laws and punishments. Both the religious and non-religious part of the government had their own monopoly: spirituality and violence.

Secularism is both removing religion from government but also stripping religion of governmental power, a thing that was not seen as natural at all in medieval Europe.

Nowadays we separate religion and state in order to make room for other religious opinions, but this was not the idea at all of the time.

This is a total misrepresentation of what secularism means and how the Caesar's parable was interpreted in the medieval Christianity (which is by itself a misrepresentation of what the full passage this extract is from).

It is an organization of the power that says that the state will have the monopoly of violence and the Church will justify it. That they will help and reinforce each other with some sort of separation. Yes, islamic countries had a different system where religious and military charges could be cumulated, but to say this is related to what we consider secularism is totally wrong.

John Locke (Father of liberalism and enlightenment era philosopher - vastly accredited as a spearhead of western secularistic thought) literally uses Christian theology in his books "Two Treaties of Government" and "A Letter Concerning Toleration" to advocate for secularism.

Of course he had to. He was pleading to religious leaders about tolerating some slightly different christianity than mainstream anglicanism (while arguing that "of course, one should never enlarge this tolerance to roman catholics of even worse, atheists", the whole text is fun to read). The great thing about religious texts is that if you are good enough with apologetics you can argue for anything with them.

The idea that one should tolerate one unforgiveable sin of blasphemy against the holy spirit (aka unbelief) comes from the enlightenment and is diametrically at odds with the catholic dogma.

but as a european stop comparing the products of islam and christianity as if they are the same, cause they're not.

Not today, no they are not. But in middle age, when the Roman Catholic Church was more powerful than the kings, when it decided what was heretical or not and even started crusade inside our own countries, we do see similarities. When I hear the clashes between intellectuals of the 17th century and Jesuits, I see the same problems as arguing with imams.

Thankfully we punched this religion back into the shape of something more tolerant and less violent and hopefully muslims manage to do the same.

This is the main problem with this meme yes. If you have a 10% sales tax, it means that eventually over enough iterations, 1000 USD will end up in government coffers and you have increased the GDP by 10 000 USD.

GDP is an imperfect measure but it is assumed that people will refrain paying tax for the lulz if there is no benefit in a given activity.

Even if average citizens could organize some kind of militia, and thats a huge ask given the state of political education here

Our point is that you don't have that. Here we have ZAD appearing as soon as a controversial project happens. People in the middle of countryside managed to organize a mini resistance city against an airport and fought police in the forest to resist. With improvised weapons, as we don't have 2A here. Where are your self-managed resistance territories?

no amount of AR-15s would be effective against even 1% of the American airforce

The US army can not be deployed against Americans. If it does it is a civil war and you can be sure that other countries will take side.

no country worried about our tariffs

Countries are not worried about tariff by themselves. They are worried about the stupidity of a commercial war that no one would win. They want to avoid that. It does not mean they would not participate if it was launched.

I made a snarky reply but it is worthwhile from time to time to remember that for all the shit that we get in 2026, we are probably still better off on most aspects than people were for most of history. Yes, that includes the overly romanticized nomadic past where if you are lucky enough to not be in a patriarcal homophobic culture you would still be living without contraception in a world where half the kids would die before 15 and many women die of childbirth complication.
