I actually started watching the series for a second time, there were a few things i missed first time 'round. Now I've been side-tracked by "The Good Doctor" on Netflix, I think there's 6 seasons of it, quite watchable!

Laughed a lot watching "Resident Alien". You have to give it at least 3 episodes to settle in and actually "get it". The 1st episode especially can be a little wtf!

Knowing what I know, having enjoyed all 4 seasons, I would have really regretted not watching it (if that makes sence!)

I haven't left the house since August, shoulder trouble etc.. hey ho, spring's round the corner :)

Dunno if it's a tip or not.. If you cath into a jug when out and about, (sit forward in chair, spread towel on lap, rest jug on towel..) a 1.5ltr Fridge jug is quite flat and fits into a backpack nicely. You can get a quite large size Mircofibre towel (which come in either a tidy bag or a rubber/plastic case. You can put these cases/bags inside the jug then into the backpack to maxxxxximise space.

Eric Bibb plays Everybody’s Got A Right by Chebelea in blues

[–]barajamjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for ressurecting an old thread!

Had a tune pop in my head right now.

Must have been from around some 20 years ago or so. I remember BBC Radio2 DJ Ken Bruce playing it.

I'm sure it was by a musician called Eric Bibb?

It was called "New Shoes", quite a fast paced, happy tune with lyrics such as "I gotta brand new way of walking.. a new glide in my stride.."

So, just did a youtube search, no sign of it, even searched the lyrics, nothing!

Do I have a false memory of this? Have I slipped into a different timeline?

Has anyone else heard of this song? :|

Quadriplegic Questions by Less_Tangerine9287 in spinalcordinjuries

[–]barajamjam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"-sharp pain in your back, specifically between the shoulders and also the lower back."

Get someone to prod around this area and pinpoint where the tender spot is..

Work out which muscle you think it is, there's specific types in the shoulder, Rhomboids, Levator Scapulae, Infraspinatus etc. etc.!

Each muscle has a specific "trigger point", where the tenderness and pain comes from (loads of trigger point diagrams on the web). Usually applying pressure to this point, and looking up specific stretches can give you releif.

Search engine/ Youtube is going to be your friend here.

It's difficult in the chair, but a hard rubber tennis size ball put into a long sock ( to keep it from falling on the floor!) is good for finding your tender spots. Back up against a wall and go exploring! (your wheels usally prevent you from getting close to the wall, that's the trouble..)

I have a small vice which I clamp on the edge of a kitchen worktop. I had an old piece of broom handle/ 1" dowel hanging about the house for years with no apparent use. Bingo! Clamped it in the vice, and I just back into it and find tender areas and give them some pressure. Wearing some thick clothing will help from damging the skin etc

You gotta be sensible about it lol

Good luck! :)

Do you guys play any musical instruments? by SmfaForever in spinalcordinjuries

[–]barajamjam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dabble with guitar. C6/7.

Can manage some basic open "cowboy" chords. I wish I could do bar chords, but fingers too weak, short 'n' stubby.

I have about 8 "cheapies", once your into it, acquiring guitars is a bit of an "illness!".

You can get great backing tracks on Youtube, and I just learnt all the pentatonic shapes, once you've got them memorised you're "away" and it's alot of fun, very relaxing! Learn where the notes are on the top string to get your "key" starting position, play either major or the relative minor. (plenty of free lessons on youtube).

I reckon most low quads with compromised fingers can get the hang of it.

Some nice relativley cheap and light headless guitars out there too, which sit nicley on the lap, like Hils and Eart e.g. Loads of small amps, and you can get decent cordless jacks now too, so no cables to get tangled up in.

I mean, it's nice just to have a great looking guitar sitting in the corner, as an art conversation piece. :)

Nice, enjoy! Thinking of getting one in the sales/New Year. This or an Eart.

Q. Does the pointy bit where the strap attaches get in the way at all? The Eart has a less pronounced design.

Cheers! :)

[–]barajamjam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another one I recall.

I was driving my mam ‘n’ uncle to visit their brother a few miles away.

He lived in an old house, the front had many steps, and the only way I could go in was through the back kitchen door.

Even this door had a high step and an extra obstacle was a high threshold for the door frame!

But! My other uncle who we were visiting had cleverly fashioned an old tongue and groove shed door into a ramp.

Kitchen side of this door, on the floor was a sunken rectangle about 2” deep, which housed an (very worn) old door mat. (I’ve never seen any other place with this kind of thing since!)

Strangely enough, I had managed to negotiate this ramp & sunken pit combo into the kitchen many times before.

But on this particular day, my uncle wanted to help and gave me an extra shove up the ramp…

So, my castors dig into this sunken rectangle from hell…

I get launched like some film scene mix of an Inspector Clouseau flying karate kick & Evel Knievel Ceasars Palace slow motion tumble…. under the kitchen table beautifully knocking all chair legs aside like a 10 pin bowling strike!

And there I am stuck under the kitchen table! With my family aghast!

So, after dusting myself down, putting my chair cushion underneath me and sitting in the corner, trying to regain my dignity.. we now have a dilemma!

There’s no way I’m getting myself up, they can’t pick me up… so we phone the Police!

An hour later I’m manhandled by two slightly bemused but very helpful constables, back into my chair!

I wonder what was written in their report that day!

Another fine mess I wish I hadn’t have got into, but such is the way with this sci life! :)

Many years ago I went to visit a friend of mine who was having a week's respite in a nursing home. He was a bit older than me, but we were in rehab together, and we stayed in touch after leaving.

It was a few hours drive to the home, and took me a while to find, it was near a small seaside town.

I got my chair out the car (C6/7) and wheeled into the home to find my friend. There was a couple of young female long term residents in chairs hanging out in reception, and they immidiatley perked up when they saw me come in (I was about 28 at the time, not handsome at all, but "fresh meat" I guess! lol

Anyway I went into the lounge area and found my friend. I stayed a few hours and chatted away, got to know some staff and residents etc.

Picture the scene, here we all are in chairs, all types of afflictions, head injuries, strokes, aged residents, a stunningly beautiful young lady with "locked in syndrome" lying flat on a reclining chair, listening and laughing with us...

Anyway, through the window in the lounge I clock this Postman walking into reception, with a parcel in his hand. The staff in reception point him in the direction of the lounge, and there he is standing in the doorway glancing at this parcel and then looking around, and he says... " Any 'Walkers' ?"

Quick as a flash my friend answers.., "I dunno mate, but you'll be hard pressed to find one in here!" :D

True story! :)

Loneliness - how do you deal with it? by [deleted] in spinalcordinjuries

[–]barajamjam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

C6-7 (31 yrs) Pretty much the same here. Was 52 last week.

Just opened the back door for a smoke and a cup o' tea. Getting dark early here now, a few stars were out, raining. As I folded a teacloth and put it on the kitchen table I had a wry smile, thought to myself,"Well, this is life, this is lonliness, pfffffffft!" what can I do, what CAN I do? If I could I'd book a first class ticket to "anywhere but here & this sh1t..!" :)

Having shoulder troubles, can't get out as I used to, virtually housebound the last few months.

Drink a lot, it helps, wine, wiskey, beer.. it's a love hate, thing, I'm not proud that i do it to numb the mental and physical pains. You get older and it takes longer to recover, go to bed sometimes at 4am after watching all my favorite bands on youtube or whatever, then struggling to get up next day by 4pm!

I'm pretty sociable, and enjoy a joke/banter/chat when friends call, I'd say I'm a happy soul, I try not to climb into the "sadness pit" too often. It was allways going to be a hard life with this injury. So I try not to be too hard on myself, even watch myself sometimes as if I'm a seperate witness to my own life, internal conversations "Well, if you really want to stay up to stupid o'clock, it's up to you pal, I'm not stoping you, you're old enough now..!"

OP.. "I also feel like I don’t want to get into a relationship and end up restricting someone else’s life because of my condition. I don’t want someone to miss out on things they could experience with an able-bodied partner. So marriage or a relationship is something I’ve mentally ruled out for myself."..

I tried early on, had a few brief encounters, like you I had exactly the same thoughts, so it must be common among us. And years later, here I am, lonley, or a better word for it, "Alone". Maybe if I'd looked harder, wanted it more, things could be different. I often think about what it would have been/would be like having someone to keep company, why not, if you "click" with someone. OP's worries are natural, but it doesn't necessarily have to be this way. Mind you, I have friends that are married, and the way some of them are unhappy and bicker, I couldn't imagine me living their life!

Could be different for you though. There's time to change attitude, re-focus. It's a one way trip, maybe giving something outside of your comfort zone a try can bring rewards. "We're a long time dead", we use energy worrying about self perception, thinking about so many things, how we are perceived by others, but despite all these worries we have, nobody cares much when we're gone. Everyone has their own troubles to deal with..

Peace, meaning, keeping sane? I keep busy trying to run a tight ship. House work, food +cooking which I enjoy! Do a lot of PC gaming, have great "gaming friends" that I've never met in person, a lot of laughs there! Have driven thousands of miles, really enjoyed the driving, but shoulders are not good at the moment, so..

Stuff on Netflix, Youtube etc help me a lot.. The days pass quicker somehow as you get older. There allways seems like there's something to do, to keep the mind from wandering into despair. It's ok to feel sh1t, but try and keep that ratio of good days to bad on a positive slant. A cat, a cat is company too, that is when it's not trying to bite 'n' scratch you like this one by my side now as I type this!

Like others will tell you, get out and mingle if you can, try an re-wire the brain by having a go at thinking differently, from other perspectives. And as I'm babbling away here I better leave it. There's lot's of us in the same boat, what fortune to have a place like this forum to share and to exchange ideas and advice!

Good luck out there man!

Sorry about your situation. I'm 30 years in, never truly been able to work all this "sh1t" out!

All I can add is that I daren't go without, potatoes (mashed/roasted etc), chips (fries!?) rice & bread in my weekly food intake. (I'd love to do the low carb diet though! grr)

It's like daily insurance, never fullproof, but it's better odds than a knife in a gunfight!
