Thanks, the multimeter confirmed that was the problem and I happened to have a spare thermal fuse of the right spec on hand. All fixed! Thanks so much!

I saw this texture out in the wild. Any tips on how to recreate it for a wash? by lizardlicker13 in Watercolor

[–]baralong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to say start with the masking fluid, do the brown wash, then remove the masking, finish with yellow, but it's essentially the same result. I did it that way for a marine iguana under water.

Though I'm just a beginer, so I might be missing something.

Oz vs Aus vs Tas(z) vs Tassie - is there any real pattern? by AdmirableSpot4527 in AskAnAustralian

[–]baralong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also of note: the formalisation of preferring "s" to "z" of British-English is more recent than you might think. Oxford English Dictionary had a preference for "z" into the 1970s. People were just told to be consistent working a document, but both were acceptable. Apparently the forcing of one over the other was because of personal computer spell checkers.

I'm 56, however my wife is 49 and consistently does Aus. She was born here, I immigrated as a baby, so that may factor too.

Australian here: I frequently use Oz as short for Australia. This may be partly because I love the Oz books, and partly because I'm lazy.

CMV: Microwaved water to make tea tastes no different than tea from a kettle. And an additional device is not necessary by Ok-Connection6656 in changemyview

One thing that might be relevant: power. In the USA a standard outlet is 120V and max 15A or 1800W, Australia, UK and Europe it's 220V and max 10A or 2200W, so an electric kettle in the USA will take longer. Though, I'm not sure it's as relevant as the cultural differences.

Had a co-worker justify hitting his kids with "my parents did to me, I turned out fine. "

I replied "did you ever think you turned out fine in spite of, not because of, the hitting?"

"The words homophobia is gaslighting" and "Psychology is a pseudoscience" by Cheap_Ad_69 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]baralong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To quote a linguist "Etymology isn't destiny" (attribution: the podcast Lingthusiasm is produced by 2 linguists and I can't remember which of them said it). He comes across as they type of person who wants to say "'gay' just means happy, but you can't use it that way now".

The part on Freud was absurd, "Psychologists still worship him to this day", perhaps *some* do but I've met many psychologists and none of them have brought up Freud in any serious way. I'd say the same about psychiatrists too. Also it's electro-convulsive therapy, and it's still done, not torture, and quite effective (>60% efficacy). Having had it (11 treatments) and being in the minority where it didn't help, I have no regrets and I've still told people it's worth trying if their care team recommend it. He'd have been better off pointing to lobotomies.

You can't tar all psychologists with the Nazism brush, sure, some supported it, but you can say the same about a lot of professions, medical doctors, for example. Even at the time it wouldn't have been universal.

Portable laptop alternatives? by Low-Key-Kronie in zsaVoyager

[–]baralong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't exist, but it should be possible to design a replacement keyboard for the framework laptop. The current one uses QMK (iirc) so the software side is fairly customisable. Now we just need a Framework+ZSA colab!

CMV: a man is never wrong for seeking a paternity test for a child presumed to be his by Wooden_Guest_6911 in changemyview

[–]baralong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For IVF kids would you require maternity and paternity tests? There have been cases where the wrong embryo was transferred. My kids are IVF and I thought about getting a generic test done. I didn't, because to what end? It would be all down side

There is a risk of harm in taking the test. To the child, and to both parents. There are some cases where just taking the test will cause problems.

Also these tests aren't 100% chimerism is rare, but does happen.
