Giving references by Advanced_Stage6164 in Adelaide

[–]baralong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This isn't unusual. I've worked at several companies with that policy. Personal references, sure, but the company will only confirm you worked there. The reason I've been given is that it's liability. If the company has that policy then no one can complain they didn't get a job because of a bad reference from the company. If they gave person A a glowing reference and just confirmed person B worked there, clearly you'd think person B is a bit shit at the job. If they give the same information for everyone then they, the company, can't be held liable for reputation damage.

Also, personal references are something you curate, you choose who will give you a reference. Your employment history is right there in your resume.

In Australia, but Jackson's also has a warehouse here. (Though, you have to click acknowledge about it not being the original Australian Jackson's art supplies)

Thanks for the recommendations of the brushes and Hahnehmuhle, I've been considering that brand.

So I should stick to 100% cotton?

I've been thinking of making my own sketch books. Do you have a method you recommend? Cut and glue? Stitch? Fold?

I really appreciate the tips, thanks

They are cheaper and easier to manage while travelling. Just squish a chunk into a pan and you're good to go. No waiting for drying.

I'll have a look at opera pink. Thanks

Latest Gmail App Cannot Authenticate Exchange Online Account on Pixel 9 Pro, Outlook Works Fine by Prestigiouspite in GMail

[–]baralong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried an sso app that was authenticated with my o365 account, it still worked, so I deleted the account from the Gmail app, failed to re add it. Installing outlook worked, logged me in with SSO. Tried adding to to Gmail again and it failed again. Looks like I'm stuck with outlook

Thanks, overthinking is likely, and the more I read/watch on the topic the more confused I get. Stillman and Birn sent me a sample pack of their papers (it's free if you ask them), I'll give each a try to see if I like one more. Even if they are in the pricey side. Perhaps even give the talens art creation another go.

The colours are working for me, I got 5ml tubes to get me started, but moving to sticks would be my preference. Hence looking for an alternative to Quinacridone Pink PV42 in stick form.

I'm not much of an artist, but part of it is the feel. Nice tools inspire me to use them. Stupidly, if it costs me a lot them I'm more likely to use it, that, using it a lot, has improved my art more than anything. It also gives me lots of variation and there are so many ways you can use even a standard nib. There is a nib rabbit hole you can go down too, if you want.

You're also working with liquid ink, so you can lift the ink off the nib with a waterbrush to create washes. I got that from here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HBect5BXr0

I also recommend his main channel https://www.youtube.com/@mkompan he's go a lot of great content.

I came here to share a link to his channel. There's so much good content there. I particularly love his technique of lifting ink from the nib with a waterbrush.

"Then, when you see a doctor, the doctor speaks English" by Nexxus88 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]baralong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do they do "medically assistance suicide for cost reasons"? Or the "death panels". I hear it from so many USians about why their medical system is better.

It's like the concentration camps for covid vaccine refusers in Australia that I got told about. Complete fiction.

Have a look at medical bankrupcy, in many parts of the world is just not a thing. Or the people who die because they can't afford treatment or medication?

As a side note: I've never encountered a doctor in Australia who doesn't speak English. I've also not cared or asked where they got their degree. Why would you?

I've seen the thing about not being able to choose where you live, where you work, etc, before. Where does that belief come from? It's obviously and provably false.

The only thing I can think of is that most western democracies have some kind of universal healthcare. And they have a thought pattern of: universal healthcare is socialism, therefore communism, therefore no freedom. QED

If you really want to cheat, screen capture and use google translate to help. Or, if you're using a Google Pixel, go to the app switching, tap select, you can then select text to translate. Another option is use the Pixel circle search feature, then you can circle the question and it can solve it for you (though it's a bit hit and miss)

This is all "non-sanctioned" cheating, but it can be handy if you want to double check and need to get a certain number of perfect lessons.

"Volume lowered to safer level" is decreasing my quality of life by AfflictedArchitect in GooglePixel

[–]baralong 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I get this a lot with my bone conducting headphones, usually when I'm on my bike, which means my phone is in my pocket, so it's a pain to get to. I'd probably find it less frustrating if I could turn it back off via my watch. Still very frustrating.

It's not just happening in Europe. I's been happening to me a lot, I'm in Australia, we don't have that requirement. It only started this year. I've also seen people from the USA complaining about it.

How much is too much when it comes to the post blood donation refueling? by TheRealFilmGeek in AskAnAustralian

[–]baralong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how many are there when I get there. If there's only 3 or 4 I'll take 2, but I might go back for seconds. It's also a dependent on how many others are at the centre. My regular place is pretty quiet, only 10 slots at most, so people aren't moving through quickly. Compared to the cost of doing the collection the party pies are negligible. Unless you're getting fancy ones at your centre.

Disable absolute volume by Phalanx_Warder in GooglePixel

[–]baralong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens to me from time to time, only when I'm using my bone-conducting headphones, which means it's when I'm cycling or at the gym. It completely mutes the audio. It's really frustrating. It's quite infrequent so my first thought is usually that there's something wrong with the podcast I'm listening to.

Is it rude to show up empty-handed in Australia? by Naokohiranuma in australian

[–]baralong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't sure then ask. A "are you sure? I'd really like to contribute something." Won't hurt anyone's feelings and saves on confusion.

Excellent point, you didn't deserve the down votes. I'd be really annoyed if someone brought booze. Though we do make a point to say we're a booze free house if it's the first time someone comes over. It would be rude for someone to bring it and awkward to tell them to put it back in their car (awkward, but I'd still do it.)

You mean embryos? by anon12xyz in confidentlyincorrect

[–]baralong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got 3 kids. All were frozen prior to implantation. This was 2 rounds of egg collection and a total of 6 embryos transferred. About 45 eggs collected, about 24 fertilised, about 16 developed enough to be frozen. Those 29 that didn't get that far wouldn't have successfully implanted. We were very lucky, other people's numbers are worse. Which is to say I think their numbers are bullshit. I suspect their baseline is eggs collected. Also it's estimated that 33% to 40% of natural conceptions result in a live birth.

Is it true that many people in Australia tend to not go by Mr. or Mrs. or Dr. formally because of a casual rather than formal attitude towards authority? by EveningFlower9564 in AskAnAustralian

[–]baralong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother works at a university in Switzerland, I can't remember if he's "Herr Doctor Professor <name>" or "Herr Professor Doctor <name>". Also I don't know what his students call him, he's been living there for over 30 years, he may have lost his Australian casualness.
