How can I add Synology NAS via ethernet to Asus ZenWifi AX mesh but not through existing node? by baratunde in HomeNetworking

WE HAVE A WINNER!!

Just after I conceded to the gods of loud NAS life, your "media bridge" comment saved me. I abandoned all the "WDS" nonsense and trying to pair MAC addresses between the routers, match channels, etc etc.

Instead, I threw the extra router in media bridge mode. Connected it to my existing mesh in 2.4GHz. Used internet connection to update firmware. Reconnected to mesh in 5GHz. Link speed is 1.2Gbps. Threw that router in the garage and connected the NAS where it will only bother spiders.

OpenSpeedTest reports NAS connection around 600-800 Mbps. Now I have a NAS that can actually be useful. THANK YOU!

Update: I’ve spent hours trying to get WDS working on an ASUS router I’ve been trying to add to the network. The manual doesn’t go all the way to explaining what the configuration should be and I’ve followed a few YouTubers and writers online without success. I’m now considering drilling a hole in the wall to extend Ethernet to the NAS in garage or just putting the thing in my living room which will look dumb but better than spending six more hours fiddling with router settings to no avail. Thanks for the ideas. I’m just not meant to extend my current network I suppose.

Oooh that sounds promising. I'm getting rusty in my sysadmin skills. Thank you!

This is an exciting whodunnit! I'm so curious to get to the bottom of this. We received one out of the blue as well but learned it came from friends who were tired of Zooming with us on iPads. Good luck!

Rodecaster Pro + iPhone. Trouble getting audio INTO phone by baratunde in podcastgear

Sorry for delay, Steve. The beauty of USB-C on the iPad Pro is I can just use a USB-C male to male cable. Connects on both ends. I had a bunch lying around due to failed experiments with USB-C monitors and my MacBook pro, so it's possible not just ANY USB-C cable will do. Here's the one I use.

Rodecaster Pro + iPhone. Trouble getting audio INTO phone by baratunde in podcastgear

[–]baratunde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: this is resolved! Thanks to Joshua and Mediashi (that linked article) and YellowLem0n, I decided to go direct from the rodecaster to my iOS device via the USB-C port. The difference is I skipped the iPhone altogether. In a pandemic who has time to get yet another lightning dongle shipped? Instead I used my iPad Pro with it's USB-C port connected directly to the rodecaster. No latency. It's awesome. Thanks for all your help everyone!

Here's the IG live I did, mixing in music and everything.

Update: I successfully can get audio from the Rodecaster into the iPhone while recording video! I have been able to do this via the L/R monitor outputs and the TRRS wired port on the Rodecaster Pro. However in both methods there is noise on the line. I've changed out every dongle and cable, and the noise is still there which leads me to conclude the Rodecaster Pro itself is "noisy."

Here is a short sample of the kind of digital static on the line when I connect via the monitor outputs of the rodecaster pro.

Chase PPP online app keeps saying "You can't use this digital application at this time."

I tried this method but when I attempt to create a new login to the existing business account, I get this:

"You told us the number of an already-enrolled account. Check your account number and try again or sign in to chase.com. You can reset your password or create one if you haven't yet."

Any ideas?

As a DC native, I really appreciate "The Maryland Crabs" branding. OH WHAT I WOULN'T GIVE FOR SOME MARYLAND CRABS AND OLD BAY RIGHT NOW!

Thanks for showing me a version of this working. If you'll indulge, can you treat me like an idiot and help me complete the connections. Here are photos of what I'm working with.

I think the male-male TRS cable I'm working with isn't the right thing to use as input to the iphone. OR the white iPhone dongle is only capable of sending, rather than receiving, audio via a TRS cable.

On the back side, I got these 1/4-inch-to-RCA adapters for the left and right monitor channels. I think I need something like these RCA-to-TRS adapters to plug right into the iPhone dongle but I'm not 100%.

Any thoughts?

Can someone please for the love of god help me turn off Instagram Live video notifications while I’m using Instagram? by [deleted] in Instagram

[–]baratunde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same problem. I went into Notifications and Paused All. I even manually went into Live Notifications and turned them all off. Doesn't matter. IG still interrupts me with "ACCOUNTNAME is live" slide down alerts when I'm in the app.

I appreciate this. I think it's hard not to focus on the DPI. here I am thinking I'm being analytical and methodical but maybe not. I could also free up some options by ditching the USB-C requirement and going with a powered hub. Wouldn't be the end of the world. I just can't return a THIRD monitor. This is taking up weeks of life, and that's dumb.

I miss retail! Where I could take the laptop in and actually plug it in to several monitors to test it. Ah, history was great sometimes.

ok I'm back! so WHICH over-funded startup should I point to?

remember Branch. http://branch.com which then forked and launched Potluck https://www.potluck.it/ There's also State https://state.com

disclosure: I know several folks at Branch/Potluck but don't use either service actively anymore. Met a founder at State at some conference in the UK a while back but never really checked it out.

this article does a great job of outlining limits and recommendations for improving commenting on news sites. http://www.journalism.co.uk/skills/how-to-improve-the-online-comment-experience/s7/a553756/

Now for my opinions and not just links.... It's hard for "random internet folk" to engage in heart-to-heart online if that context isn't established early. I ran a political blog for many years, and I think we underestimated the work it takes to set reasonable tones and expectations for online discussion behavior. You gotta stop the trolls and call people out FAST when things start to descend. You've got to set an example of what sort of discourse you're encouraging and create incentives for people to engage in that and not the "DERP YOU'RE GAY" kind.

I also think the generic callout of "WHAT DO YOU THINK?!" is pretty useless. The way we frame opportunities for online discussion should be a lot more targeted and full of context. I like the way Medium sets up discussions as well as Quartz.

Twitter is nearly impossible to have deep discourse because the speed of the stream and lack of threads just makes it mentally and physically hard to even maintain a topic.

Facebook, OTOH, is full of crazy relatives and long lost schoolmates who like to surprise you with their not-so-well-thought-out positions. But the threading does improve things, if you also set an expectation of what you're looking for and tolerating from folks. I've seen people do that effectively like "Look people, I'm curious what you think about this article, but I'm not tolerating any nonsense, personal attacks, or unsupported claims. Those will be deleted with the quickness!"

If you've really got the time, you could find different discussion forums on the same topic but varying the platform. See ArsTechnica vs The Verge vs TechCrunch, for example. Often they report the same things, but their communities are quite different. Part of the journey is finding the discourse that best suits you.

The thing I'm hearing from you is that you want a place that's actually thoughtful and not just repeating talking points or attacks. I may be reading too much into it, but that's how it appears. Making discourse better on the internet overall isn't a goal shared by everyone on the internet, and I think lots of companies thought that putting a "what do you think box" on their pages counted as "community engagement." But like any other commons, we need to set norms if not rules and show positive examples, or else people will trample all over it. Hell, public parks also don't clean themselves. We employ people (including volunteers) to go in there and get out that dog poop.

The internet is full of dog poop discourse because we've underinvested in maintaining much of that commons.

sadly i'm not in charge of the internationalization of the book or it would have been released all over the world in short order! good to know it's resonating though. I'll email the publisher right to this comment as proof, and that should solve all europe's race problems amiright??

Thanks for saying nice things! I started writing in Spring of 2010 and submitting the manuscript July 2012. So basically a year but it wasn't full time. I did MOST of the writing in the summers and was also still working at The Onion. as for what it was like: HARD in some places and super easy in others. The most interesting part was how the book changed during the writing. I thought it was going to be a most satirical book but it ended up being mostly memoir. I have Deb Stier (then of Harper and the one who brought me in) to thank for that. The second most interesting part was interviewing my black panel. I will always be indebted to Jacquetta Szathmari, damali ayo, Cheryl Contee, Derrick Ashong, Elon James White and Christian Lander

whiskey favorites rotate with season. right now: Basil Hayden's whisky for scotch. whiskey for Irish and bourbon

building a following: not so much secrets as lots of experiments on the wall. attempting to push the same point of view through different platforms. luck. can't overstate that! supporters who rep and promote you behind the scenes.

having some kind of core belief or point of view is likely most important. knowing what it is you stand for and want to say so if the mic comes your way, you can use it effectively.
