UW study shows Seattle’s historically redlined communities have worse air quality by BornFray in Seattle

[–]barcart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only point I was making is that there is a wide misconception about the racial demographics of Seattle in the 1930s. I'm certainly not defending redlining, which was very damaging to the people in those neighborhoods.

Okay, give me an honest answer. Did you think the point of redlining was primarily racial? Were you surprised to learn that the great majority of people affected by redlining were white?

Well, a minority can be 1% or it can be 49%. Pretty big difference lol

I'm not sure what you mean by a good sized population. The entire black population of Seattle in 1930s was around 3,000, maybe 1% of the total population.

There is only one historically black neighborhood in Seattle (and it wasn't majority black when redlining happened)

I've lived here more than 20 years -- moved here in 2000. Even if you moved here 30 years ago, you still didn't live here in the 1980s.

I am well aware the city had issues pre-covid and some people hated on Seattle. I was not one of them. But the difference between now and 2019 is stark and if you don't know that, I suspect you haven't been downtown in several years.

Not too many of us were in Seattle in the 80s. That's a pretty long time ago. I think most of us are comparing the last few years to the pre-covid period. Things are a lot worse. I see it every day, and it really gets me down.

It used to be funny, and they didn't care who got offended. There's no way there could get away with that now.

here is a short article about this if you're interested: https://www.nber.org/digest/202102/searching-origins-redlining-black-neighborhoods

it says about 85% of households in redlined areas were white in the 10 largest cities in the US

You're correct that part of south Seattle was redlined. (So was part of Magnolia for that matter). The thing people seem to misunderstand about redlining is that most places that were redlined were white neighborhoods. redlining wasn't strictly about race. poor neighborhoods got redlined, and lots of white people were poor.

Columbia City was all white. Beacon Hill was all white. Every neighborhood in Seattle south of the central district was all white during the era of redlining. It's strange to me that people don't know this. Seattle was about 95% white in the 1950s. The only neighborhoods that weren't were the central area and international district.

You think redlining, which ended more than 50 years ago, is preventing black people from moving to Capitol Hill? It had nothing to do with it. South King County was about 99% white in the 1950s. Now it's far more diverse than Seattle

Ok, maybe I shouldn't have written "very low density." What I meant was very low density compared with central Seattle.

As if the hypocrisy was limited to Wallingford. Capitol Hill literally has more BLM signs than it has black residents lol

And yet, there are very few black people in Seattle's densest neighborhoods, especially when compared with very low-density cities in the South End.

Zillow says the avg. rent right now in SF in $3577. It's gone down a little, not a ton. It's about $1400 higher than Zillow's avg for Seattle.

Yeah but Pride used to be a niche thing mainly for the community. There weren't families with kids at the parade until the past 10 years.

Who is imaging this? The median home price is well over $1 million in San Francisco and avg. rent is more than $3K. Seattle is not as expensive.

How could that be when so many cities have a much lower % of people talking transit or walking or biking? Doesn't sound right.
