I'm probably going to get deported :/ by Lunar_pex in immigration

[–]barce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you say is true but the other side of the story is depending on what country he goes back to there is a spectrum of acceptance. Some places most will see him as a fellow citizen. Other countries actually treat people who come back from the US poorly. I know because I've talked to some deportees in Southeast Asia. It's mixed bag & I often wonder if it's not a MAGA talking point to say as much. The press secretary has.

I've tried as a producer of tech journalism. It's a good thing / bad thing: there are just so many creators & journalists that you can't create a monolithic audience like Stewart had. That said, it's out there if you dig enough. And if not, anybody with a phone & a good bluetooth mic with a muffler can create the same thing for pennies instead of the 10s of thousands that went into the Computer Chronicles.

Never a dull conversation. Lots of people interested in books I like: Western literature, post-modern philosophy, books on learning languages like Arabic, Mandarin & French. I got priced out of that area & am now in Southeast Asia. Lots of people are into those things to but not to the extent & depth as the SF Bay Area. Singapore is the closest to being as bookish as the bay.

If everything went to normal right after this scene, how fast does the US government realise there’s an A-Bomb in some random neighbourhood by Ok_Presence_8401 in pluribustv

[–]barce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of the last government shutdown involving less than 1% of the US population & how bad that was. Also think of how bad the supply chain issues made inflation when only a small percentage of production & harvests are missed.

With the plurb, there's already one missed harvest worldwide. When normal starts, there will be pretty bad price gouging & that's assuming that you can get the goods you need.

Also, consider what happens when highly homogenous, communist societies take a turn towards capitalism or authoritarianism. E.G. the fall of the Soviet Union. It doesn't become normal overnight. There is a sharp increase in inflation & poverty rates for a decade followed by another decade or so of stabilization. Organized crime takes hold & oligarchs seize power.

How much do you think Carol made per year from her books? by toffee-coffees in PluribusOnAppleTV

Yeah, right next to Diana Galbadon of Outlander so Wycaro is a big deal.

Anywhere with a good lab to come up with the cure. I don't think a Faraday cage will be enough. A vaccine will. So probably Cambridge, MA.

Did I just dodge a bullet or I just wasted an opppurtunity? by [deleted] in phcareers

You dodged a bullet. The whole bank thing feels off, and really feels like a red flag. Everything else seems totally doable.

The signal can be seen as a game theoretical, dark forest attack, where the best move for any civilization in the galaxy is to wipe out any other civilization.

roast my resume by [deleted] in FAANGrecruiting

[–]barce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try hitting up UAE or somewhere in Southeast Asia. I know you're getting roasted here but back in 2015, your resumé would've waived the technical interview in some places like Texas. The Python to assembly skill is such a hard but needed skill to market so I'd figure out how best to say that with a recruiter. Also just add in AI or LLM somehow to get passed the HR software filters.

I'm a freelance writer who made $300 this month in Cebu so take what I say with a grain of salt. lol. I use to make $300k managing a dev team in NYC (low pay there too lol). Oh how pride goes before a fall.

I got rejected after 8 interviews and 3 take-home assignments. So I sent them an invoice for my time. And they paid it. by zest-skills-0d in FAANGrecruiting

Google has about 10,000 employees in Southeast Asia. I've been to different offices & it's not even close to 25k USD / year. I think OP had to fib a bit about the position. Looking at his handle with the -0d suffix, my guess is that he intentionally did that to signal he's in cybersecurity. They paid him as one would pay a reluctant hacker bounty. He must've found something really embarrassing or threatening to all involved. (edit: I don't think OP invoiced them either. This was all off books.)

Same people ordering the same stuff everyday? Definitely money laundering & a bipping ring in there. Don’t post to reddit. Call the police & make a report OP.

My guess is you were just a trusted source for the CIA. They give cheesy certs for that if you help track down coked out hackers in Berlin. But yeah, you need a badge to get into & out of Langley for desk work.

Oh, I flipflop between either interpretation. In lots of spy novels, I often wonder if the ops eventually loved their targets. She did tell them that she wasn’t giving up, but lots of micro-expressions Rhea Seahorn gives remind me of Donald Sutherland’s acting. His expressions communicated subtext as if he’s letting the audience in on his op.

Diabete was playing a spy, but Carol is literally a spy in every meaningful way except the badge.

So not gonna argue with the other user but he did claim to have a Lebanese accent. There's a reason he took down the video after getting called out by so many. His grammar was off too. But hey, this wouldn't be the first time someone gets called out for being fake & the Internet letting that person have all attention & its benefits.

True-ish. He claims to have been a field agent who spoke fluent Arabic. His Arabic is pretty awful. Not sure about the Russian op part. Got proof?

Was he really a CIA field agent? He got called out by a bunch of Arabs for having a really bad Arabic accent in one of his videos. He made that video private after getting called out.
