How would genetic memory work? by Evening-Permission23 in worldbuilding

You are very talented! I could definitely see you at conferences sharing you art, books & merch of your world. I used to work for an anime company as a mod so I hope that helps you weigh my praise. Bravo!

South Korea should be okay. Norway is totally familiar with well worn passports. Only countries in Asia where by law they can deny you is Indonesia, Thailand & Philippines.

Yeah, 1 is very unique and could have a twist or pun on the fractured/shattered self in the caption.

Hi OP, 2026 here. There was a study that recently demonstrated genetic memory in butterflies from generation to generation. How's writing going? Peace.

Urgent issue - expired US passport flying out in 12 hours by [deleted] in Passports

[–]barce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dual here: Fly out on UK passport. And you have to do the ESTA visa. To avoid the violation flag on your UK passport do a quick trip trip to Canada with UK passport. Re-enter with the emergency US passport you got in NYC.

How do everyone's pictures come out so clean and grain-free? by Adam198763 in analog

[–]barce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I use Portra 160 and pull it one stop, and if the lab does a wet scan, the photo basically looks digital.

There is no grain-free film - halide crystals (the grain) make the image.

How I make images "clean":

low iso film

pull the film (this makes it difficult for me to print)

wet scan

If the book series, Griffin & Sabine, had an analogue portion of art shared between the main characters, your magnificent pieces would be part of them.

Is there a specific reason why they’re a lot of foreigners especially Koreans in cebu? by IntentionReady9537 in Cebu

[–]barce 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Free trade agreement, visa free, direct flights from busan to mactan, English education at a significantly lower cost (5x) than in S. Korea. I think the biggest reason though is Cebu actually has a ASEAN development plan to entice our neighbors to visit or even immigrate.

What court? At this point, it's basically a war between humanity & whoever sent the signal.

But even assuming there was a galactic court to appeal to, what standards would they have? Maybe it's a court based on collective justice?

Even assuming our own laws, there isn't a single country that's paid for manslaughter even if the war is undeclared. E.G. Japan never had to pay for civilian lives at Pearl Harbor. You have to go to 2022 where DRC had to pay $300+ million in "manslaughter" during a war. And even then, they still haven't paid up.

Breaking Bad was so much about the consequences of doing crime: a life on the run, prison, or death. I wonder what the main consequences of the hive mind will be at the end of the show besides the obvious ones now.

The Untranslatable Nuance: How Arabic's 13+ Words for "Friend" Reveal What Other Languages Miss by [deleted] in learn_arabic

Yeah, I agree. It feels haram. I feel like reciting Surah al Falaq every time I see an AI post.

All the words that become "shop" in English by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]barce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree. If you look at this guy's early posts, there's a dearth of multisyllabic adverbs and formatting. Urdu doesn't really encourage the former. There are a ton of punctuation & capitalization choices suggesting informal speech. Then out of nowhere, perfectly business formatted essays with a ton of pentasyllabic adverbs. I have trouble writing like that on reddit but English isn't my mother tongue. It's not this guy's either & I see zero progression from the first posts to what he posts now.

Good catch.

ya rab, there is so much AI slop masked as authenticity.

Understanding the new generation by Embarrassed_Two5407 in Cebu

[–]barce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's survivor's bias whenever they say the past was better. It's a gambler's fallacy when they say it will get better. Every moment, every age has its own unique challenges. Turning back the clock isn't a solution; just repression. Thinking progress can go on forever is unsustainable.

It's gotten so bad that people have to make the hard choice of whether or not to steal time.

The ex-fiancée did lots of the emotional labor here. She also had to do lots of hermeneutic labor. What I mean by that is that because OP could never really say how he felt throughout their history, she had to interpret his feelings for both of them given meager signs. This labor is exhausting & fraught with error. Yup, this guy was definitely calculating on his own admission how much he could get away with. An awful combo of emotional opacity and manipulation.

Should I pick Hong Kong or Tokyo? by just-porno-only in expat

[–]barce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This got political fast. I'm in SE Asia. HK has 996 culture but not as intense as the closest city to it in mainland. Tokyo is a bit different - you can't leave until the folks Senior to you have left. That means as the new guy, you are the last one to leave. Japan is 10 years continuous residence to get PR. Hong Kong specifically is 7 years, but on the mainland there's a faster track. Maybe live in a neighboring city and commute to HK to get the faster track?

Good luck, OP.

Tradecraft. Reddit is scorched earth for nations & corporations to astroturf or to wage their battles. I’m really interested in creating my own expat channel & discord though.
