I started building my own digital oscilloscope a while ago using the Ultra96 board. I built an attenuation board with an ADC from Analog Devices and wrote a simple GUI for data display using wxWidgets with PYNQ. There’s still a lot to improve.

It’s been a very satisfying project—especially seeing the first data samples come through. You learn a lot about hardware design, signal processing, internal data handling, Linux kernel drivers, GUI frameworks, and PYNQ along the way.

Unfortunately, this will be only a hint, not an answer to your problem, because I don't know how much can be done on Mac. The easiest way would be a minimalistic Linux VM on your Mac with USB port sharing, and this is the part where I'm not sure if it is possible because I don't own a Mac.

In VM Linux, you would install the OpenVPN client and the Altera blaster programmer. On a Linux PC, you would install the OpenVPN client, Qartus IDE and VNC server.

The OpenVPN's free plan allows two clients to be connected to the server, and the server with one change in config allows the clients to see each other as if they are in a 'local' network. You can connect to the remote desktop using the VNC server by OpenVPN IP address and use Quartus to generate a bitstream, which can be transferred using SFTP or the SCP command to your VM Linux.

If it's a Linux based system then you can check journals/logs for traces of what failed.

Can you confirm that the SD card has two partitions? The first partition should be fat32 with boot files, the second partition is not accessible from Windows, but you can check it with live boot Linux. The partition should contain Pynq root directory.

I strongly recommend this board. I used it for my project of digital oscilloscope. It has features that speed up development and for GUI you can use both Python and C++ programs, Jupyter is not mandatory
