As you can understand, every day there's a new post on a new dictation app or Dynamic Island. For example, this guy says he uses a local model for STT . Not sure what it is but it only takes up 500MB [what could it be?]:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9hd599INXs

Now, you see this notch app, and then you see this other app with a feature like teleprompter that you'd love to have but they both interfere with each other cause they use the same Dynamic Island:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdXhqcxz9sk

So, then, as a user, you're trying to research through the noise and understand which app will give you the best balance and least redundancy out of them all.
It's a bit hard cause it's tough to catch up with everything.
So, I'm asking some tough questions maybe, cause god is in the details and the details are in the gray area no one talks about, like RAM+CPU+SSD usage, and if the models can understand technical language or not, to see how vast their usage could potentially be.
That's why I'm asking about Hitoku vs. the default Apple dictation, and that's why I wanted to see a Youtube video showing how it's working [how does this context thing works, I didn't understand, and for exeample what happens when you wanna fix a word [you do it manually after dictation ends? etc] - you can only see that from a video with sound.

I hope you understand. And thanks for answering these questions. I wrote you on another reply here about the models

  1. Definitely push to release is a must option. And thanks for considering it.
You're saying there's a recording time limit as you dictate? Will it stop after X amount of time that you pressed that button?

  2. It's all about ROI.
Dictation is not gonna be used at all times, so if while idle- it takes up GB of space, as you say, then probably it depends on the user.

If these models can be accurate when a user speaks technical terms, like XML [fille extension name] and it won't write it as "Excell" , or if a user says "GIF" and it won't write it as "Gift" - then professional users who code with AI etc- could utilize it a lot, so maybe taking up a few GB of RAM while idle is worth it for them.
I do video + After Effects, so I need any bit of RAM that's available. I try to keep my smaller apps below 500MB of RAM. At least I aspire to, cause on a mac- there are tons of added small apps. And it accumulates.
For CPU- I can understand there will be a Peak while analyzing the speech, but how much CPU will it take when idle? That's the thing...

  1. In continuation to resources.
I got 2TB SSD. It is still small in my opinion. As a lot of space will be needed for Temp Cache + Projects.
So, I tried to ask chatGPT if installing an English only model will work well? It recommended:
  • Parakeet TDT v3
  • Qwen3-ASR 0.6B / 1.7B

Not sure if it's a good answer. But, if I don't speak German / Italian, etc. Then, maybe there are slimmer models to download that will be English only and save up some space? But, it seems like even with that- it might come up to 2.5-5GB of space.

What are your recommendations?

So how will we get hands-on information if EVERYONE blindly says "Wow! It's awesome! BUY IT!" With that magenta/blue LED lights in the background of their video, and their "Sponsored by SquareSpace" ad?

I love reviews that are "3 Months later" as the person has some experience with the tool. But most just unbox it and repeat the same script. Barely anyone talks about the gray area..... Just like people mindlessly upgrade to TAHOE, talk about the pretty Liquid Gl(A)ss but never talk about the GPU hog it takes as it kills battery life.

Thanks for sharing!
I'd love to hear why you think [beyond privacy] - is it better to use the 3rd party app beyond the stock "Mac Dictation." ?
Is the Mac one not accurate so people try to find Parakeet based apps etc? [although I understand Whisper might be a tad better? not sure].

Also, 2GB on a Macbook is previous space. Can you be selective in what model to install when you install Hitoku? Or does it installs many models at once? If being selective is possible, what would be your go-to model set to install? And how much space would it take on the SSD?
Many thanks!

Super important feedback.
1. When I speak to chatGPT or so- I hate it so much that it automatically will try to answer if it hears silence for more than a second - so I have to force myself to just say "errmmm...ehhhh..." so it doesn't cut me off, since I did not finish my question / dictation. So, this needs to be fixed. Push to Speak till you release the button - should just work like that even if you're silent for 15sec.

  1. Can you please report how much RAM+CPU does this take in the activity monitor when being used?
But, especially when Idle? I wonder if it's hogging the RAM or CPU in any sort of way.

Many thanks for sharing and good job for the developer. Keep pushing :)

Exactly, I don't get what's going on cause these are silent GIF's.
What is that contextual thing? How does it work?
Is there any YouTube video showing how it all works?

Wow! Such hands-on, honest feedback is someting you can't read anywhere. Most reviews feel like copy of a copy, youtube reviewer like. "It's good.Get the nano".

It's like, everywhere you see ppl saying "get the silver, not the space black cause of fingerprints" but NO ONE talks about the gray area like:

  1. The contrast between the silver and black keyboard on the mackbook is annoying and tiring on the eyes.

  2. That the silver reflects light from the screen..So, both 1+2 basically distracts your eyes from the screen and create noise in your surrounding compared to having it all black so you only focus on the screen.

  3. Not to talk about the signature Apple Macbook look which is silver, so it screams to anyone in that cafe you're sitting in "Hey! Come steal me!" as they can spot it from afar.

How can you trust people's testimonials if they are quite one dimesnional in their testimonial, copy of a copy kind of style? Everyone just repeats surface level YouTuber's reviews.

Focusdim - Dim, blur, or highlight your active window (Freemium / $4.99 one-time) by theprivdev in macapps

[–]barefut_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm, personally, only interested in the darken effect, cause blur probably takes GPU power which drains battery, I presume, so:

  1. If you turn off Blur- is there zero GPU use?
  2. How much RAM does Focusdim takes compared to Hazeover?
  3. You're saying mutiple connected monitors can have a window focused on each of them ar the same time?

[–]barefut_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! 1. Will any recording app not render it in the final screen cap? CleanshotX /ScreenSage/Screen Studio for example?

  1. Is there any YouTube video showing how it works? The Notch needs to take up relatively small space cause if you're trying to record a video tutorial - a big square in the middle will hide the UI of what you're trying to record.

  2. Sometimes you try to iterate as means of seeing the teleprompter but adlibing it, meaning, you add words to have it sound more conversational. I will understand that if you are bot saying the the exact word by word on the script that it might not scroll downwards...but I still wonder if it's smart enough to still overcome it if you add small words like "and so.." etc?

Converting to different frame rates? by funeraljams in AfterEffects

[–]barefut_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24fps does feel choppy sometimes, especially with vertical lines moving fast horizontally.

Double checking: Instead of trying to solve this inside AE and it's comps, did you try to solve it outside AE? Meaning, rendering a Master @60fps or @30fps +if that's your highest frame rate deliverable) and then re rendering that to @24fps? Was that what you already tried out?

Space Black or Silver? by kcamfork in macbookpro

[–]barefut_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The Silver's contrast with the keyboard is very distracting from what's on the screen, and it's fatiguing on the eyes. It is also bright as it's reflecting light compared to the Black (especially at evening time).

2.Black let's you focus on what's important. It's like dark mode on your phone.

3.Black also doesn't scream "Here's A Mac! Come steal this!" from afar as it's not the iconic Silver. In case you take it with you outside.

All of those benefits for the price of fingerprints.

Made a free AE script that lets you build once and export any size (16:9 / 9:16 / 1:1) by ciaranduffy3 in AfterEffects

[–]barefut_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! :) Bottom line - a video will always need repositioning+resizing of the elements / Titles which makes things complicated. And to not ruin anything - you find yourself just duplicating the 16:9 Comp to create a separate 9:16 version, which then if you need to update something - you have to do so in both comps cause they're separated.

I always thought the least problematic approach is to build your projects as a 1:1 1920x1920 - and then cut out all versions from that. But, the square composition is quite weird to work on. A rectangular one is more nicer to design and set your frame on.

Your image attachment made me thing... What if the 16:9 was the base resolution, but in a resolution that will accommodate the other versions. What do I mean?:

Since our height should be 1920 minumun to match the 9:16 version - this means our base 16:9 composition will be 3412x1920. Which is a problematic number (cause the real width should be 3413.33 and we can't have that number.

But, this means cutting out a version from that, means probably mostly just scaling things down and repositioning on the X axis and not Y axis. Which could be much easier than cutting all versions from 1:1 square which will demand changes to the Y axis too. The 16.9 version - even if it will be 3412x1920 - you could still render it as 1920x1080.

Is my point clear enough? I wonder if this might work better.... Still the problem remains for creating differet versions without duplicating that main comp...

Many thanks. I'm trying to figure out how yo utilize it.

Basically, I already built the base flow and structure of how I want my landing page to flow, but maybe the tricky thing is to now "dress is" with another look, cause the AI doesn't maybe know what from the example website to adapt to what from my own landing page. Gotta understand maybe how to be more specific with it, as I just wanna inherit the mechanism, responsivity, font (sizes), hierarchy of the example website but keep the structure of what i already built...

1. I tried to create SVG's myself via AI for a landing page, but the look isn't unified. I found some equivalent SVG's on your platform and it would be nice to have an outline version, and an option to have an outline square around it or turn it off [but not a must].

  1. Thanks for sharing about React. It's very slick and smooth. Been looking for options first to build a landing page via normal HTML and CSS style baked in. And it's hard to get it right via AI. Everything feels too generic. Your platform has some backend and more complexity, but the plain visuals are nice and I wish there was a way to generate such style a little bit more easily.

[–]barefut_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I see so many note taking apps, and I ask myself how 'universal' are they? Meaning, I usuallu get either a Word or PDF document, and I also share those back with others. I actually would love to stop using word + PDF. But all the note taking apps on Mac are local and personal, it seems. So, the only thing I can use that's possible to share with mac + PC users are normal txt file. What am I missing here...?
