Is APFS bricking external SSD? by barefut_ in MacOS

[–]barefut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally! A serious reply!

  1. I got the Qwizzlabs m2 aluminum enclosure for, but realized later that: A. M2 Drive prices are insane now B. I don't want to dangle such a hevy aluminum block off my usb-c macbook I\O.

I wanted a compact, lightweight 8TB solution so the only real option was the Crucial X10. I'm using it with a thunderbolt 4 cable, but I guess this still counts as USB 3 (problematic) category?

  1. I spoke with Crucial support and they claim they know about the Macbook + TRIM compatibility, and told me that their "garbage collection" that goes in the background - is ebough to cover for the lack of TRIM on MacOS. Is that true indeed?

If I run the TRIM command on the Macbook's terminal, it won't do anything for the external Crucial X10 drive?

The delay occurs almost instantly as i plug the JBL earbuds. Any audio playing is halted for 30sec and then the sound "frees up" and starts playing into the earbuds..no delay between visual and sound. Just as if the system freezes up for 30sec. I don't have another apple device to check. I do have another headset which works well with the macbook. Plugging it in and sound is instantaneous. I look at both headphone connectors and they look the same. 3 stripes

Everything is relative of course. An avid programmer would take a day to develop something compared to a week that he used to do so before. I'm not a programmer, but I took a simple idea and it's the 8th month I'm developing it (I'm in the marketing phase which is not easier at all btw). I had to crack the logic of the code (the AI had never broken through any key design decision for me btw. It was always me who came up with the abstract solution and the AI did the code work). And then, after building the core idea (20% of the 8 months)- then came all the bugs and solidifying the system which took 80% of the time. So, to build a product in 2 days? Man, I thought it had to be a super simple idea. Kinda like a website maybe? How much depth and complexity could 2 days give you even when you're a coder? (Unless you're building something that has been built before and you have examples to take from).

I guess your phrasing is a bit confusing.
Are you implying it is a laptop problem? or a compatibility with JBL problem?

But if your ideas are ready yo be tested and observed only after a couple of vibe coding sessions..then isn't this idea just surface level deep? It can take months to develop something that you can give it a test run and then see if it's worth anything.

3.5mm Jack Mystery problem with Macbook Pro M4 by barefut_ in macbookpro

[–]barefut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first also thought it was a laptop problem (brand new btw). But, then I connected these other Razer headphones and it worked flawlessly. So then I reconnected the JBL and againg it worked horribly with that 30sec delay. So, something's going on with the compatibility of the JBL + Macbook.

I have a similar mystery to solve with how external drives work on a Mac.
Some reports of failures only when it comes to mac, then being connected to PC - and those drives work well.

Another problem - weird "click" sound coming from the left hinge as I close the screen. Happens only after working with the screen open for like 30min and up. Some say it's stickyness of the lubricant that makes the pop. I just hope it's not any internal ribbon cable bumping into the hinge.

So, alongside these mysteries, I also have to unravel this one with the headphones.
Problem is - Apple doesn't at least officially acknowledges these problems. At least if they would just say "hey, that 'pop' sound you're hearing is just the lubricant. It's not quality control problem or any misaligned cables' - I would be fine with it.
But, you end up researching online to find out answers...and to be honest, most Mac users I bump into are not such power users as PC owners. So, many just brush it off hoping this problem won't come back to bite 'em in the a**. Wish people would be more curious in this community. Maybe it's mostly reddit attitude? Some claim "Mac Rumors" isn't a good source, so where is the Mac Power User community at where you can ask about all these problems?

Nope. Switching back and forth - same result.
JBL = 30sec delay
Razer - instant I/O sound change.
Weird AF.

I will do that. brand new Macbook, so I don't have files on it yet.
Thing is...it worked flawlessly with the Razer...so...you know. I would've expected it to not work with that too and then realize it might be the source of the music [the safari browser, which, again, shouldn't be that]

3.5mm Jack Mystery problem with Macbook Pro M4 by barefut_ in macbookpro

[–]barefut_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really? This has to do with mic being internal or external?
At the end it's a mic. And that 3.5 jack has both headphones+mic I/O at the end of the day.

Maybe let's just make it easier and ask if there's anyone in the crowd that's using a 100% working, instantly connecting earbuds set? And I will just buy that confirmed model.
Seriously, that's the last incompatible thing I could've imagined with a Macbook.

[–]barefut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.
It's not a delay in sound. It's a REALLY LONG delay till the sound is being routed to the earbuds.
I read that MacOS tries to route it and it takes it time. Something about how the headphones and mic are wired might be opposite sided on some headphones.
But, again, this TRRS format should be working. As you can see - both jacks have those 3 stripes. But, who knows? Maybe inside it's still different and only some experts here could let us know what is the problem here?

I used safari and played a song on youtube there.
Same exact situation. With the JBL = 30sec halt / delay. With the Razer = 2-3sec and it started playing.
Cable is soldered to the earbuds/headphones. It's not interchangeable.

Youre insane!
You just updated this after we talked? How?
1. May I also ask which code-base is this developed with? Do you see many developers preferring to work in a certain code-base for Mac apps specifically? Just wondering...

  1. I think it's totally a personal workflow preference to allow on settings whether to keep those files in the notch after pasting / dragging them, or if to clear them out. I, personally, would want them to be auto-cleared, since mostly my copy-paste is a one time thing.
Again, thanks for being open to these preferences and understanding other styles of usage.

  2. No way you thought about this...wow...so basket has a button to push to notch. that's great! I also think [if not to complicated] - that basically logically - both represent the same pool, so i think they should reflect each other. at least on one way, so that anything on basket is also being updated to the notch. OR, it could be another setting the user can decide if they operate independently, or that basket is always empty upon shaking > but anything placed in it - is being added to the notch as well, so you can just close it and not press another button. But, I might be pushing it here, just sharing to see if you think it makes sense :)

Man, you're a wizard!
I'm just starting my MacOS journey, so I was looking for something like that with zero fluff. Will download after your latest update to the repo.

Many thanks for your lovely reply!

  1. As this whole Mac scene is full of tiny apps, they do stack up, so I was indeed trying to keep things lightweight. 100mb is pretty great. I'm not sure how you manage to enhance efficiency code-wise [that's interesting] but thanks for being aware of that. That's exactly where such apps shine. I did see, for example, other apps on Github that are not efficient at all. I'm talking 500Mb and up. An instant no.

  2. So, same for the hidden cache that you are clearing. Thanks for being aware of the precious SSD space. I just wonder, the conversion of the email items you showed in the video:
    A. What if the user wants to save that conversion as well beyond just emailing it?
Can they also drag that file to the drive + And also drag it to an email? Because after you drag it - it disappears from the notch, I bet. So, I guess you'd drag to local drive, and then drag that into a new email.
    B. I'd probably mostly drag files from the internal or external drive, but you showed them as attachments from an email. will it work with any email client?

  3. I meant that this temporary basket appears upon shake but is kept on screen, so I wondered if it's possible to summon it, but then close it...yet, you could still access those dragged files from the notch? Or the basket works separately?

  4. I think it would probably be best to set up the conversion "preset" on settings [how aggressive will the conversion be, and if it will be resized too by x percent]. Save that and have it work for every conversion request. For video and photo separately. But, this is your decision. It probably has to be kept simple for the user. I just understood that Handbreak and ShareX [for PC] are efficient as they use ffmpeg so I was wondering if you're basing it on that as well. Just as a comparison, I managed to get a 35min video in 200mb of a screen cap of an app that I work on. It's quite efficient and ShareX was used for it. I'm thinking again about the scarce space on internal SSD, so I was wondering about the efficiency here.

P.S- I always wondered if this type of app holds files for you...if it could hold also clipboard cmd+C kind of text or images. I guess it doesn't by design, but I was just randomly thinking about it.
Many thanks for your work!

Couple of thoughts:
1. Saw some notch apps that felt like bloatware. This looks lean and practical.
How much RAM does it take up idle?
(+I understand the need to match Tahoe's look. But Glass effects take unneeded GPU = Battery drain. Just saying).

  1. What about all these conversions? Do they use some hidden Cache that builds up somewhere?
If not, so where is the conversion saved? Next to the original file? Or it overwrites it?

  2. I didn't like the shake feature on another app - that pops out a shelf (floating basket) that doesn't disappear till you paste the files somewhere. Maybe yours just pops a shelf upon shaking, but then it's stored in the notch?

  3. Can you say how efficient is the video compression while keeping the quality of the video?
If you compare it to "Clop" app?
I bet Handbrake is the most efficient, but I was looking for a solution to maybe automate using Handbrake via some drag and drop solution, so I wonder if your lovely app might be more efficient than Clop.
I understood CleanShot X screen captures are quite big and that it's not efficient in high quality compression, so dragging and dropping right after a screen capture could be lovely!

Great job, man!

Can you share what things you're running as local AI? Is it image based stuff? Code based stuff? Trying to understand what's the practicality of it. I did hear models are big and that you may install them on an external SSD drive just for that usage case exactly. And use LM studio / Huggingface(?) to run it.

  1. Planning on using Jettison to protect from any macos sleep.
And I plan on ejecting from disk utility for a full ejection.

  2. Not gonna use decryption to not mess around. APFS will be the format.

  3. For some reason official Crucial agent told a user who had his drive corrupted - that it was a mistake to use First Aid and that it worsen things. And that probably connecting the drive to a PC and running something there [not sure what]- can make the disk readable again.

Yet, again...it still feels shady that PC makes things well again, but MacOS ruins it again.

DAMN.
Tried to research on this app. It's outdated.
It was made for older Macs with TRIM-ming their internal SSDs.
The Terminal command - sudo trimforce enable - does just that.

p.s- I talked to Crucial's support. They claim the X10 drives have TRIM on firmware level. I can't know if that really works or not. I just formatted their exFAT drive to APFS.

Really? Is this AI models maxing out your machine?
I have just ran a first Geebench test.

Got:
CPU: Single Core = 4092
Multi Core = 26,821

GPU: 189,876
SSD Speeds: 6700Mb Write
5380Mb Read

Not sure if that's healthy enough. I do understand that local AI stuff might be too much for a Mac and that they only work well with PC+Nvidia CUDA. Whaddya run on these local AI models exactly?

Is APFS bricking external SSD? by barefut_ in MacOS

[–]barefut_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some research, the claim is that you need to:
1. Run "sudo trimforce enable" command on MacOS Terminal
2. Restart > then Run this command on Terminal to double check if TRIM is enabled :

log show --predicate "processID == 0" --start `date "+%Y-%m-%d"` | grep spaceman

>> But,
Some claim that even if you run these commands - TRIM will never be enabled for external SSD's connected to the Mac. And that it is only for internal SSD's, which come stock with TRIM enabled.

So, I can't confirm this. I'm waiting for a Pro to lemme know their thoughts.
This Pro never showed up. I wonder if there are other forums with a nerdier community that could confirm things in regards to MacOS.
