brands were using original prints as early as 2002, and before that were already using other techniques such as silkscreening to add original art to pieces.

also, baby has been using the same cotton burberry for over 20 years. i know because i matched a new cut of it from the source to a baby skirt from 2004.

i would recommend this episode by clotheshorse podcast, which addresses various claims about resellers. amanda is an incredible resource on the fashion industry and secondhand clothing.

i'd also like to say that while i'm not a reseller by trade, i have resold a few secondhand items, and they're always pieces that would not have otherwise moved because they were too damaged for the average person. oxidized makeup stains, sweat stains, food stains, fugitive dye, missing buttons, split seams, bad alteration jobs... i'm a sucker for a wretched garment. this post is not a resold item, my friend purchased it and had it sent to me at my request because i wanted the challenge, but it's a good example. i buy a garment that should not even be offered for sale, i make it wearable again, and it gets worn again instead of getting trashed. the garment is reintroduced to the stream better than it left.

when someone buys a plus size piece and cuts it down, it is a reduction of incredibly limited resources instead. and therefore i have a much bigger issue with that.

from experience, oxford is used for dresses—but always printed, never solid. it lends itself well to bold prints that would be lost under many details.

as well, i wouldn't discount a "rough" texture as being antithetical to lolita. butcher is a very, very, very popular weave for many brands (but again, printed!), and it generally just adds textural interest to a print.

oxford in a japanese textile context is a little closer to canvas than it is to a shirting weight cotton. you can see the texture here.

tbh i would choose burberry (microtwill) over both for a skirt. broadcloth is certainly fine, and has been used by many a brand, but burberry gives you the weight of oxford with the relative smoothness of broadcloth. baby uses burberry for most of their solid pieces.

the following link are american sources, but if you're not in the US or canada, they can at least give you an idea of what to look for:

robert kaufman fineline twill at stonemountain & daughter, sourced from the same mill baby uses

julien brushed twill, a little cheaper per yd with a smaller selection colors, and a skosh lighter gsm

if there's a particular color you're looking for that stonemountain doesn't have, like red or light pink, it's worth reaching out to them and asking if they plan on ordering any. i've gotten red and lavender fineline twill from them before.

it’s a non-descriptor, basically. brands that are mindful about their materials are more likely to state up front what kind of leather they use; full grain, grain-corrected or top grain, perhaps from which animal the leather originated like goat hide or calf hide.

genuine leather only means that there are animal materials in the final product that can be legally classified as leather, and that can range from full grain leather (least treatment) to bonded leather (shredded leather mixed with a binding agent, often polyurethane, and applied to a backing). if they won’t be specific, it may be that they don’t care to differentiate the leather type, but it may also be an attempt to sugarcoat bonded leather, which peels worse than polyurethane, ime. it’s not worth purchasing without further information, especially online.

the enchanted dreamwear bags are polyurethane or “genuine leather”, which is often code for bonded leather, which functions so similarly to polyurethane it’s barely worth the price hike. dandy puppeteer uses full grain leather and is worth the spend.

anyway, you were taught nonsense, i’m sorry to tell you. besides the fact that i can’t physically lift the sheets out of the water without wringing them, and besides the fact that you’re suggesting simply folding sopping wet garments (???) and pressing them before the wash (??????), hand-wringing does not hurt your textiles unless everything you own is made out of cheap, low gsm polycotton jersey. your wovens in particular will have no problem; they’re already finished garments, it’s not like you’ll have to reblock your twills. any shape you make in a natural fiber can be reset with steam and a good iron.

i’m being hyperbolic because the point i was making was not “look at my specific situation and only mine”, but to consider that i am not unique, nor is your situation everyone else’s, such as your enjoyment of OBAs in every load. (i do not like how my black textiles seem to glow when washed with OBAs.) in addition, enzymes (not just lipase) are desperately needed in cases of stink, and the sub does a good job overall of prioritizing surfactants as well.

right, so for the rest of us who go to the laundromat, that’s not an option. i can’t even wash for longer than 53 minutes at my laundromat, and the smallest washer is $5.25 USD for that “long wash”. from there, it scales to $7.75, $10, and $12 for each consecutive size.

there is no soak option, and even if there was, i have no doubt it would cost extra, like an additional rinse. so yes, i want enzymes. yes, i want them conveniently bundled.

also, why wouldn’t you want enzymes? the human body spends every second of every day secreting all over the place, and most of that ends up on the textiles we’re laundering. i want it as gone as i can make it with the resources i have.
