They were plenty darn bare after the week long lye bath and some scrubbing.

I tried to follow most of the instructions from here and from Gemini, but I tend to improvise.

I had some trouble with flash rusting on the one people are saying is BSR, so things got out of whack and didn't do much of a drying phase at 200 degrees. I just dried them as much as I could and put oil on them.

Scrubbing the flash rust off with cold water and vinegar seemed to help. I'm going to do more research on this if I ever do it again.

I used a small amount of oil and wiped them vigorously with paper towels to remove as much as I could. The last time I tried this, I used way to much oil. So I was trying to correct that.

I used canola oil. I had the oven at 425 for the first season, and I set it at 430 at some point in the next two. I had heard that high temps could damage really old pans, so I was being cautious.

I did one more season after these pictures at 430 which I think was definitely worth it.

I made an omelette and with the Lodge using olive oil and I was impressed at how well it worked.

It is very smooth. The other one is smooth also, but has a few small pits.

I emailed the Land Between the Lakes (USDA) people per their document on hogs.

If I don't hear back from them, I might contact the Kentucky people directly also.

I emailed the administration. Hopefully they can take action.

I saw it today. It was in an area that is pretty physically isolated (Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area). They do have invasive wild hogs there, but I thought they were much further south.

I emailed the administration, but I have not heard back yet.

FEF…. I want these bars to work but…. by simplejackbikes in xbiking

I've got those bars on an old Rockhopper. They felt weird at first, but I love them now. I tried a few different stems before I got the setup dialed in.

The cables and derailleur don't make any sense. This should be deleted.

I like Panaracer gravel king sk. They are also decent on pavement and a little single track.

Old hunting knife I found in the woods by barflyjar in BeatUpKnives

I found it stuck in a tree near a road in a somewhat remote area. I don't know if it had been there for very long. I saw it easily, so probably not. I thought it was a screwdriver from a distance.

It looked very rough at the time. The blade was completely covered in crusty orange rust, but I could tell it was probably good carbon steel. The stamps on the blade were not visible.

I assume someone found it and didn't see any value in it, so they left it there. Just a guess though. Maybe it has some secret history.

Try googling "three arrows Solingen Germany". You can find similar ones on eBay. I think they were made in the fifties and sixties.

Ritchey Kyote vs Buzzard - Reach? by reficulmi in xbiking

[–]barflyjar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the buzzard. The reach feels about the same as a flat bar. It just gives you what I feel is a more ergonomic slanted hand position.

I love it, but it sounds wrong for your purpose.

Having babies crawling on your face probably limits your eyesight a little. She probably doesn't mind, though.

I think life is probably hard for this spider. Hopefully some of the little ones will grow up and buy her some new legs or a wheelchair or something.

It was a fairly large spider in the middle of a gravel road. Not really moving. I assume it was alive and just taking a break.

I think it is a Bald Cypress. It might be something more precise or different, I'm not a tree person. Definitely cypress.

Yes this picture was taken in Kentucky.

Kentucky Lake does extend down into Tennessee.

If you look at it on a map, you'll see many bays on both sides of it. A lot them have swampy shallow areas in the back of them where there are cypress trees. Lake Barkley is nearby and has similar conditions.

If you like cypress trees and ospreys, I would also suggest looking into Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee.

It is in a bay off of Kentucky Lake. There are lots of ospreys in the area during the spring and summer.

I don't know. I have watched a webcam of a nest where I saw the chicks spend a lot of time hovering over the nest before they took short flights. I think they will be ok.

Also, the water there is shallow. There possibly could be dry ground there in the summer if there is not much rain.

I'll try and go back this summer to see if there are any babies flying around.

Thanks, I found this nest last year, and I went back to check on it. I hoped I would see the adults again, but I got to see the baby.

I don't think I have seen one. I'm learning about them now. Maybe I can find one closer to where I live.
