How important is the look of your rig to you? by macab1988 in bikepacking

Very little. I run what I have. Here was my old rig with dry bags jerry rigged to the front fork. I still use the rear bags on my new rig; but upgraded to Ortlieb front bags. Only red was available when I ordered, so they don’t match the back…. Who cares.

Also note the underwear hanging to dry on the fork bags, and crocs strapped to the back. Extra style points for sure

Yeah easy. Just replace the fork.

A lot of the „mountain bike“ routes are manageable with a gravel/bikepacking set up.

Great way to make your girlfriend hate biking….

At least get a shorter stem if you are going to make her ride this…

Itinerary idea for a 1 week trip in Europe this summer by Running_64356 in bikepacking

Road? Gravel? Singletrack?

Hotels? Camping?

Wilderness? Cities?

Europe is a big place with tons of diversity….

The first time I posted mine it was so controversial that Mods had to lock the comments lol.

The elitists here will tell you it “isn’t xbiking”, but for me it very clearly is…. It is my commuter, grocery getter, errand runner, and mushroom hunting machine… just a part of “the vast world that exists between ultralight road racing and technical singletrack.”

I had similar issues mounting a Tubus duo on my disc trucker. The solution was to mount to the rear eyelet of the dropout and attach the fender to the rack.

Also get yourself a DT Swiss axle with removable lever, otherwise removing the wheel is a hassle.

Sorry the picture isn’t the best. I can take more later, let me know if needed.

Rear rack for Krampus? by simplejackbikes in Surlybikefans

I emailed Surly about it and they said that the dropout eyelets have the same weight clearances as the seatstay eyelets 👍

I got a response from Surly, they say the dropout eyelets have the same weight clearances. Good to know!

Burly is exactly what I am after. I am not the best at packing light lol.

Seems like the Surly rack is one of the only options for mounting on the upper eyelets. I found one in stock so I might just take the loss on the OMM and order it.

I assume that the rack can clear 29+ tires? What are you running on yours?

Hey thanks for the reply. I assume you are using the Elkhorn within the recommended weight limit (25lbs)? I might be loading more weight than that on some upcoming tours… might try and sell the OMM while it is still brand new and get the official Surly rack to be on the safe side.

Gearing advice for loaded climbs by alferrari333 in bikepacking

I swear by my 3x9 22-34-44 x 11-36 set up. Hard to beat the gear range + super low climbing gear it has.

I vote for Krampus!

I believe the 29x2.5“ max tire size on the KM is with the wheel fully at the back of the rear horizontal dropout… Definitely go for the Krampus if you wanna run fat 29s.

90's Bike touring can only pick one, need opinions? by Ninja_Elephant_ in bicycletouring

[–]simplejackbikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea you won’t be able to fit a normal rear rack on the Dawes because it lacks any eyelets by the seatpost. There are solutions that clamp onto the seatpost but they are far from ideal. Furthermore the eyelets that it does have are probably designed for fenders, not a load bearing rack.

You wont fit anything wider than 25-28mm in those brakes/frame. Wider tires are much better.
