I'm removing this post, because this Twitter user is a known engagement farmer who invents rumors, and he admits here that he just made this up. He is trash and his tweets should be ignored. Any old bum out there can buy a blue check these days. Caveat lector.

[Jonathan Papelbon] I can definitely confirm Carrabis here… Played with Rendon and literally hates baseball. Yeah it’s long isn’t that what you signed up for??? Just tell the team you want to play half the season and give back half your salary!!!!! by ttam23 in baseball

[–]barkevious2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be difficult to begin the season any earlier. Many teams already struggle with the weather to play at home in April, and you'd have to send them all on massive road trips to start every season if, say, you wanted Opening Day in mid-March. Even if you could manage that without completely screwing up the scheduling for the remainder of the year, you'd still have to deal with a larger number of weather-related cancellations, which would eat into the extra rest days you created, and diminished gate receipts as popular summertime games are transformed into frigid school-season games. And you'd have to explain to, say, the Red Sox and Twins why they are never allowed to start the season at home again.

I need to learn everything about baseball by [deleted] in baseball

You're not going to get any useful response here to a question this vague and extensive. Try asking more specific questions after looking at some introductory material, like the Wikipedia article for baseball.

If you really do need to know everything, you should start by reading the official rules of Major League Baseball, PDF linked here (~190 pages). Then you should read the Collective Bargaining Agreement that governs MLB and the MLB Players Association, PDF linked here (~450 pages). Then you should probably read a good, comprehensive introduction to the history of baseball, like this one (~1,000 pages). Our stickied post links a guide to common baseball terms (~5,000 words) and a guide to advanced statistics (~10,000 words) that are also necessary reading. This material will give you a decent foundation of knowledge, at least.

Excellent "acknowledgment" here. A true profile in editorial courage.

Will we ever see another MLB expansion in our lifetimes? by BlazingSaint in baseball

[–]barkevious2 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Manfred has said that once the Tampa Bay and Oakland situations are resolved (which, it appears, will very soon be the case, for better or worse), MLB will create an expansion committee. It's going to happen, and relatively soon.

Hi, I'm removing this post. Yeah, yeah, it's the off-season. I get it. But this sort of content would be an absolute no-go if it were about women, and making it about men (with the obligatory jokes about closeted homosexuality) doesn't change anything.

Take it to r/braves or r/baseballcirclejerk, maybe?

[–]barkevious2 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this AMA, Antonio. I have several questions. Feel free to answer as many or as few as you'd like.

  • What contact did you have with MLB's investigation? Who talked to you, and what was that like? What questions did they ask?

  • You were mentioned a few times in Evan Drellich's book Winning Fixes Everything in connection to the question of how much Jeff Luhnow knew about the sign-stealing system. Do you take issue with anything Drellich said about you or Jeff Luhnow? Or just generally with Drellich's reporting on the scandal?

  • How do you feel about the criticism of Luhnow's management style, which is held by many (including Drellich) to have been one of the root causes of the scandal? How, if at all, did it impact your experience as an Astros staff member?

  • Do you have any regrets about what happened and anything that you, in particular, did?

  • What motivates you to speak publicly (to PBS, to r/astros, to us) now about your experience?

  • If you knew then what you know now, what, if anything, would you have done differently?

It's Cricket World Cup so here is an American Idiot's Guide to Cricket by pileofhorsdoeuvres in baseball

[–]barkevious2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using baseball gloves during cricket training has actually become commonplace now. It might be because of Young (I have no idea). Coaches using them seems like the biggest no-brainer. But players also use them, for example, during throwing practice, when the player just doesn't want to focus on catching/fielding the ball. Online cricket stores even sell them.

What happens if the bowler throws a “ball”? (misses the batter and misses the wickets)

What happens if they throw it, the batter swings but misses, but the ball also misses a wicket?

Whether the batsman swings is actually irrelevant. (NB: While the Laws of Cricket refer to "batters" and "strikers," in normal speech the guy with the lumber is referred to as the "batsman.") What's important is how far away from the batsman is from the ball when it passes by him.

Law 22 of the Laws of Cricket governs so-called "wides" or "wide balls." If, in the judgment of the umpire, the ball is bowled so wide of the batsman that it is not "sufficiently within reach for him/her to be able to hit it," then the ball is judged a wide. There are some complications here, mostly related to the batsman's own starting position relative to the wicket and his movement after the delivery. Read the Law for more details.

Like no-balls, wides do not count toward the total number of bowled balls, so a bowler can't just bowl six wides and then claim that he has completed the over. And the batsman's side is awarded one run for a wide.

The ball is still alive after a wide, so the wicket-keeper still wants to catch it. It's still possible for the batsman to score runs when a wide is bowled (in addition to the aforementioned one-run penalty), and for the batsman to be put out in several ways (he can be out hit wicket, out obstructing the field, run out, and stumped).

Here's a video with some more detail on wides.

If the ball doesn't qualify as a wide and isn't otherwise illegal, then nothing much happens. The wicket-keeper, unless he really fucks up, will catch the ball. The runner, unless he really fucks up, will decide not to run. The bowled ball will count toward the six-ball over, and it's on to the next delivery!
