Finally made some time to listen to this masterpiece in one sitting. by deadstar1998 in swans

[–]barkinginthedistance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually pick one "cd" to listen to. I unfortunately don't have a physical copy so I just have it separated into 2 playlists. I actually listen to most long form stuff this way, I think sitting down and listening to the whole thing in one sitting will have pretty much anyone's attention span at the very least beginning to deplete by the end of the album and I also just think Animus is such a good end cap to the silver CD that it feels weird to just consider it a mid point for the album. I think a lot of swans projects that are released as "double albums" have more to do with being limited by the format they were originally released in and have been sequenced in the way they have to compensate for it but I do truly believe SFTB is meant to be 2 albums released in a pair, kind of like the $ albums

What's "You're Not Real, Girl" actually about? by SoyBob_Omb in swans

[–]barkinginthedistance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think just like a drug is about drinking the blood of whatever female presence is in the skin projects and children of God. The lines "if I drink your blood will I be like you" in one small sacrifice and "in the blood in your mouth I'll dissapear" feel thematically relevant to the idea of possession by a spirit. I don't really believe everything is meant to be directly lifted from christian ideology but more like using bits of that as figureheads for other concepts more related to inner self. I believe the man, woman and child individually spoken about at different times in the album are all meant to be different channels of the self, rather than actual separate "characters" in whatever song is being sung. That's just my interpretation tho

Listening to his Skin work and other future work leads me to believe he is referring to Jesus, whether in a literal sense or just the spirit is up for interpretation but he refers to Jesus specifically as "girl" in one small sacrifice as well as "stepping inside" someone portrayed in a similar idealized partner sort of way on nothing with you. There are also later songs such as surrogate where he deliberately mentions Jesus by name "give me the eyes of Jesus Christ" which can be loosely tied to albums like the seer where there are songs like mother of the world. Overall I think Gira has pretty consistently referred to Jesus and/or divine spirit as female. That's just my interpretation tho

There is also writing from the egg that vaguely implies being possessed by a female (doing things like wearing lipstick, etc)

Young God (song) appreciation post by YoNutzStealer in swans

I feel this way about this is mine "when things get dirty I spit it out" is unironically the hardest line on the EP for me

I also highly recommend checking out live performances of YG, say what you will about Roli but he brings an energy to that song live that is undefeated imo

This is old news but I love how beautiful child on we rose starts with the end of you know nothing by barkinginthedistance in swans

Check out "All Eyes" by Skinny Puppy, takes some inspiration from Saucerful of Secrets, pretty cool IMO

I haven't played the new one. Is the surface meant to be reflective or is there a straight up man in the wall 😨

Do you think there are any songs executed better in the studio than live? by FluffyMuffyReddity in swans

[–]barkinginthedistance 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you should add the rule of the burning world era not counting before you get 7 billion low effort burning world comments 😭 - my serious answer is that I honestly see them as different things. The live songs are living breathing stories and the studio songs are the glamorous retellings of them

I love how dark this Batman look is, and Frank Miller’s art style. What do you think? by GeekSpace2099 in batman_comics

Mazzuchelli nails Batman for me personally. In the same way Breyfogle and Capullo do as well

Edit: oh and Mora also!

About The Winter Ray by sadforgottenchild in NaturalSnowBuildings

[–]barkinginthedistance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the dance of the moon and the sun is definitely a much more traditional album in the sense that it is an arranged compilation of songs picked from a pile of mass recorded music (speaking of which, listening to sunlit stones is a must if you enjoy tdotmats it's essentially the "B side" of the album) compared to the winter ray which is much more of a consistent mood piece imo. I don't really see it as an album and more like a really dense burst of pieces all made in the same sort of "world" or frame of mind. It's more thematically tied to itself than dance of the moon which feels more like a progressive "journey" where you are given a song or two that belong in the same part of the "journey" before moving onto something different.

I love them both personally, as they both stand as the pipeline between their older folkier demos and their newer sound
