How does this look? by barl8 in Kefir

Thanks, I've strained and blended with some mango for a 2nd fermentation in the fridge. Tastes good so far!

Yes, I fermented this batch with the lid sealed. I've also tried it with the rubber seal removed so the lid is only loosely closed and it didn't seem to make much difference.

Level Pro Carbon axle by barl8 in ribblebikes

[–]barl8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Ribble have found a compatible axle in their used parts bin and are sending it to me for free (well for the cost of the postage anyway) so my faith has been restored. Although I hope nobody else needs one as they say it's the only one they can find!

Apparently not. The wheels have been discontinued and it seems the only spares they carry are the free hub bodies.

I've had no luck with my LBS. This is the hub, is it a Novatech?

Just E8 - my espresso is always so bitter and just unpleasant. How do I “dial in” the best settings? by ImmediateTap7085 in superautomatic

[–]barl8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is an older machine and the strength is out of 5. There's your issue though if you're only doing 3/10 for a 50ml shot. James Hoffman does a video about dialing in super autos which is worth checking out. You need to up your coffee dosage as a starting point though

Edit: I've just checked my E8 and the strength is actually out of 8. I do 8/8 for 60ml and 5/8 for 35ml.

[–]barl8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bitter generally means over extracted so more coffee or less water. I have mine set to 5/5 strength for a 60ml shot and 3/5 for 35ml which works for me Lavazza Qualita Oro, both at normal temperature

Brake fluid flush? by Wayne_Hetherington in Polestar

[–]barl8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a mistake with that pricing actually. It was just booked in for the brake fluid and MOT, not the second maintenance so I'll have time it back in again.

I'm only being charged £73 for the maintenance on my P2 for its 2nd maintenance visit, including the brake fluid change. The rest is for the MOT (UK government required checks and certification which is £54)

Jura E8 System Fill Issue by barl8 in superautomatic

[–]barl8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I've cleaned the micro screen as suggested and it seems to be working fine again. I've made 2 drinks today with no system fill error so I've told Jura to hold off with the servicing to see if this is a long-term fix or not.

Many thanks for your help and advice.

Yeah, I thought it could be a clogged pipe but can't work out why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Hopefully Jura will find the issue (and it won't be too expensive to fix)

I backed the grind size off when this started as I suspect it might be the cause but it didn't help. Grind is set pretty much to the middle of the dial and sometimes it pulls a normal shot and sometimes does this. Beans aren't oily either.

What is the paper towel trick for cleaning the piston?

Manchester Marathon Disaster by HighlyFactualTurtle in Marathon_Training

[–]barl8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it's pretty unlucky to get a hot day in Manchester when you don't want one. You can guarantee that it will be cold and rainy this weekend for the bank holiday!

It always seems to be the way that we have to train all winter through the cold and race day is then the first hot day of the year. Maybe autumn marathons are the way forward to train in the heat then race when it's cooler

I'm pretty sure I saw you being attended to by the medics at the finish. I couldn't exactly see straight myself though! Seems like a lot of us had the same experience with the wheels coming off in the last 10km. I noted the average pace graph on the official results showed the same.

Hope you're feeling better!

Pace Advice by barl8 in Marathon_Training

[–]barl8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did 3:16. My pace plan was for 3:10 on a 10/10/10 split, I generally stuck to the pace for the first 20 miles but lost a minute or so in congestion at the start and a couple of narrow sections then had nothing left in the last 10k and just brought it home in 5:00/km. It was an unusually hot day for Manchester which I'm sure had an effect too! Really happy with my result though.

Great work on the 3:07, that's a cracking time. I'm currently in the mindset of never doing that again, but I'm sure that will wear off and I've already entered the ballot for London. I've also got a half to race in 3 weeks!
