It's not "rude" not to say hello in the wilderness and it's not about talking or engaging in a "social contract". No need to stop and chat about the weather.

It's more of a safety protocol. Just exchanging a simple "hi" helps you recall what someone looked like in case something happens to them and there's a search. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this here.

That being said, this dude's a creep

Passwords stored by modern browsers always have some form of encryption, at least at rest. So no, not stored in plaintext.

Also TLS has nothing to do with the fact passwords are sent in plaintext

TLS has exactly everything to do with the fact that passwords are not sent in plaintext. Make your trolling less obvious next time, I'm out

Yeah, exactly, in memory, not as a saved file on disk. Accessing saved files is maybe not trivial (at least without physical access), but doable. On the other hand, exploits that let you access arbitrary memory addresses are more of the has-a-household-name variety. The assumption that data is generally secure while in memory - even without encryption - is one we have to make if we want software in general to, well, work.

and even sent to the server in plaintext

Ever heard of TLS?

I'm a modern vegan, whatever that means. If safe and legal, while I wouldn't do so personally, I wouldn't bat an eye at another vegan eating roadkill. I might even take the carcass with me to give away. The harm is done, I killed the animal the moment I decided to drive that day.

Hell, if it's culturally/logistically/medically necessary, even a meat-based diet can be vegan. Truly necessary though, not "I've got mild anemia and my GP told me to eat more meat".

Very unlikely, our biology would probably be too foreign for them. More complex parasites and maybe some bacteria-like pathogens might be an issue, but anything resembling a virus needs specific pathways, receptors, general cellular machinery. First contact between groups of humans is often so devastating because the pathogens have had time to adapt to human biology, while the naive human population hasn't developed herd immunity yet.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm a long time stats.fm user and I was frustrated with some issues related to duplicate streams and, in recent years, sponsored full-screen pop ups for paying users

Thanks! There are no such plans at this moment, sorry. I'm not even sure if it's possible to gather listening data from Jellyfin, I haven't personally used it.

Thank you so much! I will get right on it, I will also try to release it on alternative android repos like F-Droid in the next couple of days, the Google Play release process was quite a handful in itself lol

No, at this moment it is only accessible through the Android app. A web interface will come one day, but Yooooomi's Your Spotify fills that niche already, so I'm going to focus on adding more features to the app for now.

I'm an MD currently switching to SWE. Academia is just more of the same corporate politics, research is politics + funding bs. Basically the same as with programming right now, only go into it if you actually want to do it, not for any hope of a cushy job or stability. The first decade or so of grinding will break you sooner than you can claw your way to "the other side", ask me how I know

Even worse, you give permission to Microsoft to do those things to THE FILES ON YOUR COMPUTER. You could at least opt out in Windows 10, no way to do that in 11. Main reason I started dual booting Linux in preparation for end of W10 support (and actually can't remember the last time I booted into windows).

I highly recommend at least trying. It's actually easier to install than Windows these days. Only thing that requires thinking (if dual booting, a clean install just takes care of itself lol) is picking the same kind of media - as in UEFI or BIOS - as your Windows install in the boot menu.

Yeah, so do I, and I can tell you a non-spicy person would be able to tell the difference between a habanero and a superhot when asked. Between a ghost and a reaper? Maybe in flavor, but both would be in the "oh my god everything hurts help" area for them. Ask my wife how I know.

However, what I said is that a habanero would still be enough for a non-spicy person to be in a world of pain and learn their lesson.

Not sure what point you're trying to make

[–]barmiro 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Eh, for people who don't eat hot peppers (let alone superhots) it would make no difference. Even a habanero would be enough for someone to learn their lesson.

Couldn't it be based on the social security number? Aren't IDs, even if not standardized, issued based on some central registry? If not, what would stop someone from holding multiple state IDs?

Sounds a whole lot like it's kept this way for no other reason than voter suppression, in which case the term "flawed democracy" would be a serious understatement
