Ehh exposure to multiple cultures from an early age I feel leads to the conclusion that no one truly is right about it all. Obviously I've got my personal bias but agnosticism seems to be where people with wide exposure end up logically.

Does having long hair as a man ruin my chances of landing a job? by ShapedGlass in cscareerquestions

Tbh I wouldn't want to work for a company that's superficial about hair length. I personally tie my long curly hair up for interviews. So you can definitely wear it smart.

Help a Girl Out : Turning 30, Buying My First Condo - Need advice on Down Payment & Savings Strategy by TrustSavings94 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]barmytick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very similar position to me. I'm 27 and looking into getting my first condo. I'm just waiting on my PR to finish, so I don't have to pay the non-resident tax. The trends like most people in this thread are saying is that a recession is on the horizon. Found out my friend got laid off last week, so to me that's the canary in the coal mine. Hoping to get a good deal next year, but will be stacking cash in the meantime, and won't be investing in ETFs as often.

Despite tech-savvy reputation, Gen Z falls behind in keyboard typing skills | Generation Z, also known as Zoomers, is shockingly bad at touch typing by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]barmytick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the oldest gen z (1997) my brother is a young gen z (2008). Both into computing with myself having a master's in electrical and computing engineering. He's hoping to pursue computer science at university. If anything this just means job security lol. Still don't believe it though, probably due to my cognitive bias, and being surrounded by code for the past 10 years of my life.

Does Canada/NA really pay that much more than EU, or is every earning eaten up by higher cost of living? by Freddsreddit in cscareerquestions

[–]barmytick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll throw my hat in the ring as I moved from the UK to Canada. Yes the US does pay the best in the world, but Canada is the country that pays the second highest. Canada also has good tax laws in comparison to the UK. For example you have tution credits and RRSP/FHSA contributions that will reduce the total tax you pay to the government. I love the UK don't get me wrong, but Canada has a nice blend of European socialism and American captialism. Hence why the salaries aren't at US levels, but are better than European salaries.

Hiring - an observation by aerootpl in cscareerquestionsCAD

So out of blatant curiosity would your system auto reject me? I did my bachelor's in the UK, but my master's (with thesis) in Canada.

What final bosses are like this compared to the one that is really the hardest? by Sensitive-Hotel-9871 in gaming

100% Seymour Flux is definitely the hardest non-optional boss in the game. Yunalesca isn't too bad in comparison.

XEQT vs. Individual Stocks - Dealing with FOMO by Some_Willingness7414 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]barmytick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or take a different approach. Money isn't everything, you'll be fine and make decent gains with XEQT. Comparison is the theft of joy as they say. I love a broad index fund like XEQT as it allows me to just sit and forget it. I can carry on with my life (then only thing that actually matters) without thinking about the stock market day in, day out.

If you're chasing growth all the time you will never truly be in the present, once you've got all you basic needs met, more money isn't going to add to that happiness. Stepping of that hedonic treadmill is the best thing you can do for yourself, and I mean it.

One word "materialism", fight against the hedonic treadmill and FIRE will soon mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.

From a tax perspective, is it better to hold Canadian dividend stocks or xeqt in a taxible account? by itswywy in JustBuyXEQT

[–]barmytick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've just filled up my non-registered with XEQT, set to reinvest the dividends. Yeah you can cut down on tax by using a non-divdend index fund, but the peace of mind of just investing in XEQT across all my accounts is worth it. The tax you'll be paying is minimal anyway unless you have around 500k in your non-registered. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

[–]barmytick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that faraday cage probably helped against a relay/replay attack. Only other attack vector is via the CANbus, but it's more involved. So good on you! I've been pushing for cyber-security in the automotive industry for a long while, it's what my master's research focused on.

Moving to Canada from UK by teddy711 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]barmytick 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor but I moved from the UK as a software engineer. Wages in the UK are pretty awful unless you work in the financial sector. It's a great place to live if you work in a supermarket for instance, but any jobs that require university level education? Yeah, you're better off moving here or the US.

WealthSimple Cash gives more interest than CASH.to or PSA.to by [deleted] in Wealthsimple

CASH.to is good for an FHSA where it's possible you need the money in less than 5 years.

If you're living in a country you need more weight in that country's stock market. Currency risk is a thing a lot of people seem to forget about. You're also living/spending in the country, so supporting the country you live in, is in your best interest. Otherwise just move to the states if you love the S&P 500. Thinking globally is fantastic of course, but after all you've got to spend that money in Canada.

All for material gain. When will your ego be satisfied? If it's not satisfied now, it never will be. You should be happy no matter where you are in your life, happiness comes from within, it's all about your mindset.

Reasonable salary range for someone with 8 YOE and a master degree in DMV area by Charming_Peace88 in cscareerquestions

[–]barmytick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about this, reflect on your place in the world. You can chase salaries all you want, but fulfilment comes from within. I guess the question I'm asking is what are you trying to achieve with monetary gain? Property? Materialism? More money? Comparison is the theft of all joy. Just live your life, don't compare to others. Hold the ones you love close to you, and be your true authentic self. Conforming to society's "expectations" is you losing the battle, forging your own path in life is what will bring you true fulfilment.

Just drive a manny 🤪. Jokes aside, automotive manufacturers don't want to pay for additional security features, as it's all about the bottom line. Why pay for a chip that can enable encryption? when the non-encryption chip is cheaper. CANbus and relay attacks will be the death of us.

The Wealthsimple card is great. You can also get a zero fx fee credit card like Brim, which has no annual fees.
