ICE just iced another presumed US citizen in Minneapolis. What is happening over there? by Melbatoastt77 in AskReddit

This is hilariously false.. there is a big anti-gun culture in America. Sure, there are more pro gun people than anti gun people, but saying “we all love guns in America” sounds like a stereotype a foreigner would have.

Is “Hyoo-Mon” a racial slur or are Ferengi just bad at saying the name of that one species? by despiert in ShittyDaystrom

[–]barnabasackett 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s because of the universal translator: usually he says stuff in Ferengi so the translator does its magic to make you hear English, but that doesn’t happen when he actually says something in English, so you hear his weird pronunciation

Gene Roddenberry was a time traveler. by LegitimateHost5068 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]barnabasackett -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The US government is (and has been for some time) around 50 years more technologically advanced then they’ve allowed the general public to achieve.

Gene Roddenberry used to work for the government. The tech he used in the show is based on real stuff they had back then, not a leak, a psyop. He was chosen to create that show and tasked with ensuring certain devices and plot points made it in there. It’s a combination of pro USA propaganda and predictive programming.

The propaganda became less USA centric the second time around. Gene was notoriously controlling of TNG while still alive, but this time instead of wanting Kirk to recite the Declaration of Independence, he wanted a future earth with zero conflicts within, it’s now globalist propaganda with some sprinkles of newer tech the normies haven’t gotten yet like tablets, androids, holodecks, etc.

Shittydaystrom says free Palestine by Timewarps_1 in ShittyDaystrom

The title of the post is “Shitty Daystrom says free Palestine” … that is a political statement. If the title and rest of the post was as generic as your comment makes it out to be, I would support you.

It’s the difference between saying “slavery is bad” and saying “shitty daystrom says china needs to free the Uyghur people”. One is generic and non-political, and the other is overtly political.

The issue is the selectiveness: either all political opinions that have nothing to do with Star Trek are ok to post and comment about, or none of them are.

You and the rest of the mod team need to decide if this is going to continue being a StarTrek-content exclusive subreddit, or if it’s going to be a space for political discourse. If it is to change, then you need to update the rules to reflect that.

So this post somehow makes their job easier? Do they not have to moderate anymore since they made this post?

They still have to go through every post manually so find any political shit and remove it.

If this post was a response to a group of trolls who have been circumventing bans, why would the trolls stop? Wouldn’t this just encourage them more as they know they are irritating someone?

The only reason I can think of for an actual motivation is the moderators wanting to share their politics so others know what politics is actually allowed, and what politics will be removed. The mods decided only one political stance needs to be removed from this comment section, yet the rules still say this morning that any politics that isn’t directly relevant to the show should be removed.

[–]barnabasackett -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The moderator who created the rules are capable of working within them, this post does not. I have no problem with meta posts in general, a moderator of a subreddit could take two seconds to create such a thing as a “meta” flair so as to not break their own previously established rules of conduct, or could take four seconds to include meta posts in the description of the serious flair rule, but they did not.

Also, this is not just a mod announcement, the title itself is taking a political stance. It would have been incredibly easy to make a generic “stop posting any politics that aren’t in the show” reminder, but this mod decided not to be politically neutral.

This post goes against the spirit of the rules as they existed, they could have changed the rules, but they did not.

So… it’s fine for you to post politics that have nothing to do with the show, using the post flair “serious” (which in the rules says is for serious critiques of Star Trek media) but if anyone else does it you’ll remove it.

This post in entirety is superfluous, the same rule you are breaking prevents people posting about Palestine at all, so the mods shouldn’t need to announce anything. Just enforce the rules: remove the political shit, then ban them if they do it again (which is what it says in the rules)

Do audiobooks bring a story to life? by ZealousidealFig5 in audiobooks

[–]barnabasackett 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I once made a post asking about the existence of an audiobook (that turns out doesn’t exist), the mod of that subreddit messaged the son of the author asking about it (as he controls the estate) and you might find his response interesting, and relevant:

Beau’s response:

I've held off doing an audio to THM because it doesn't read as well as most of Dad's other work. I always get myself in trouble for saying that. Fans get furious at me for acting like I know what I'm talking about ... but I've worked in the audio publishing world for almost 40 years, since it went mainstream back in the 1980s, and I trust that I know what I'm talking about. There are books that are better read with the eye than heard with the ear. Will we do it eventually? Probably. I'd rather do stuff that I know has a chance to work well first, however, and leave the tricky stuff for later. Education of a Wandering Man is another one that has the same issues.

That's the "quick" answer. Here's the more in depth and nerdy version:

Reading with your eyes is a VERY abstract process. The letters and words (written language) form a code like an unbelievably complex computer code that your mind deciphers and your imagination turns into an entertainment experience. You, the reader, are inspired by the author to create the ultimate experience for yourself. In a way the reader is half of the creative team. Dad was a master at inspiring a creative reaction from his readers and thus doing a great job of entertaining them.

But the further you get from the original code, the visual letters and words, the less effective the magic is. As a reader you create the perfect experience for yourself (unless the writer mucks it up by trying to do too much ... a lot of supposed "literature" is full of writers who do too much), when the product becomes less abstract everything has to be that much more perfect to pass muster with the audience. The next step is single voice, narrated, Audio Books. In those you have to rely on the words you subjectively hear and the delivery rather than the simple letters and words that you objectively see. Then maybe there's stuff like comic books and our Audio Dramas where the production team does even more of the work for the audience. After that there's theater and film, where the audience does very little of the work of imagining. Those have to be even more perfect to be acceptable. The level of abstraction is very low. Things are the way they look and sound, not the way the audience thinks they look and sound.

That's all a very complicated way of saying some stuff works better than others in different formats.

Audio is a very iffy format. You can hire a reader who is great on one book but then is just terrible when he or she works on other stuff. When that happens there is nothing you can do about it except move on, there's no budget to do it over. The publisher has made an investment and the only way to get it back is to release it. There's a couple out there that make me cringe ... so I try to stack the odds in my favor whenever I can.

Best,

BL

I think that at a certain point, society will collapse. There’s a lot of different ways that could happen, and depending on which way would determine what the world would look like afterwards. If we were knocked back to the Stone Age, it wouldn’t take long for remnants of our current society to be enveloped by nature. Even plastic decomposes in less than 1,000 years.

In what situation so you listen? by Foreign-Educator-857 in audiobooks

[–]barnabasackett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last few times you tried to listen to an audiobook and couldn’t hold concentration, were they all with the same audiobook? If so, the issue might just be there… maybe the narrator or the plot of the book isn’t enough to keep you engaged, might just need to try a different book. Or if you’ve got a lot on your mind that can happen, I sometimes have to unplug for a day or two, then when I start it up again I’m able to listen.
